On the Day I Was Kicked Out of the Wealthy Family, I Had a Flash Marriage with a Tycoon-Chapter 60: Discovering Her Injury
Henry Chamberlain reluctantly fell silent. ’It seemed his boss was letting a pretty face cloud his judgment lately, neglecting his empire just to spend time with her.’ That might have been fine any other time, but right now, they were facing threats from both within and without.
Certain people within the organization were stirring up trouble behind the scenes, while Silas Coldwell was openly making challenges. He worried that if Jasper left now, they would seize the opportunity to strike all at once.
"Get back to work," Jasper Lockwood ordered.
Henry didn’t dare say more. He turned and left, just as Chloe Sterling was walking in. He nodded at her. "Madam, you’ve returned."
"Yes," Chloe Sterling murmured, continuing inside. The moment she entered the room, her eyes met Jasper Lockwood’s.
Remembering how he had deliberately kissed her in front of Damian Rivers, she suddenly thought, ’This man can be so childish.’
"You’re back." A faint smile touched Jasper Lockwood’s lips. "I’ve made the arrangements. We’ll leave together the day after tomorrow, in the morning."
"Okay, sounds good," Chloe Sterling replied, then added, "I’m going to head to my room for a bit."
"Alright." Just as she turned, Jasper Lockwood added, "Wait."
Chloe Sterling paused. "What is it?"
"You changed," Jasper Lockwood noted, his eyes on her outfit. It was a high-end designer brand, different from what she’d been wearing when she left.
"I did. The outfit I was wearing got dirty, so I had to change."
"I see." Jasper Lockwood didn’t press further.
Chloe Sterling walked to the elevator and went up to her room. She pulled her suitcase out of the closet, found a bottle of medicine inside, and swallowed a pill. It would help the wound heal faster.
After taking the medicine, she changed into a brown, long-sleeved loungewear set. She smoothed her sleeves before heading back downstairs.
Jasper Lockwood was on the phone, standing before the floor-to-ceiling windows. As Chloe Sterling approached, she faintly heard his cold voice. "Break his legs and dump him back at his house."
Sensing someone approaching from behind, Jasper Lockwood turned. When he saw it was Chloe, his cold, handsome expression softened. He spoke into the phone again, "That’s all for now. I’m hanging up."
Chloe Sterling didn’t ask whose legs he was planning to break.
And Jasper Lockwood had no intention of explaining. He didn’t want to reveal that violent side of himself to her.
"Is there anything you need prepared for you in Country E?"
Chloe Sterling moved to his side, gazing out at the garden. "Not for now. Let’s wait until we get there and assess the situation."
"Alright."
The following evening, Chloe Sterling began to pack her things, which consisted mostly of medication.
When she finished, she noticed the wound on her arm had started to bleed through the dressing. A patch of the white gauze was now red. She immediately went to the cabinet for the first-aid kit.
Just then, a knock came from her door. "Chloe, are you done packing?" Jasper Lockwood’s voice came from outside.
Chloe Sterling froze, her hand hovering over the first-aid kit. "Not yet," she called out. "Do you need something?"
Jasper Lockwood pushed the door open and walked right in. Chloe Sterling put the first-aid kit down and instinctively hid her injured arm behind her back. ’She didn’t want him to see the wound.’
The furtive movement didn’t escape Jasper Lockwood. A flicker of suspicion crossed his eyes. "What are you hiding back there?"
After a few seconds’ pause, Chloe Sterling answered matter-of-factly, "Something private."
At that, Jasper Lockwood didn’t press her. Instead, he asked, "Is there anything I can help with?"
"No, it’s just some medicine. I can handle it myself. You should go take care of your own things."
"Come downstairs for dinner when you’re finished."
"Alright."
Jasper Lockwood left the room, closing the door behind him.
Chloe Sterling let out a small sigh of relief. She took out the first-aid kit again, treated her wound, and re-bandaged it properly.
Ten minutes later, Chloe Sterling went downstairs to the dining room.
Jasper Lockwood was waiting for her at the dining table with a glass of red wine beside him. After she sat down, he asked, "Would you like a glass?"
A small smile played on Chloe Sterling’s lips. "I’d love one."
Jasper Lockwood promptly poured her a glass.
"What time do we leave tomorrow?" Chloe Sterling asked.
"Eight in the morning. We should arrive in Country E around two in the afternoon. Is that alright?"
"Yes, that’s fine."
The two of them ate in silence.
Chloe Sterling had a few extra glasses that evening, but she didn’t feel drunk.
After dinner, as they left the dining room, she planned to go back to her room and double-check that she hadn’t forgotten anything.
"Chloe." Jasper Lockwood suddenly took her by the arm. He had intended to ask her for a walk, but he immediately felt something was off. There seemed to be something wrapped around her arm. He then noticed her brow furrow slightly in what looked like discomfort.
He immediately let go, his gaze dropping to her arm. "You’re hurt?"
"It’s just a minor injury," Chloe Sterling said, her tone flat and unconcerned.
Jasper Lockwood took her hand and gently pushed up her sleeve, revealing a white gauze bandage. His eyes darkened. "You were hiding your arm earlier because you didn’t want me to see this? How did it happen?"
"I was in a minor accident while driving today. The window shattered and a piece of glass cut me."
Chloe Sterling tried to pull her hand back, but Jasper Lockwood held on, his voice low. "Why didn’t you tell me you were hurt?"
"It’s just a minor scrape. It’s not a big deal."
"If it’s not a big deal, then why were you trying to hide it from me?"
"..."
Chloe Sterling looked up at him, momentarily at a loss for words.
"What really happened? Did someone do this to you?" Jasper Lockwood pressed.
"No, it was just a traffic accident."
Jasper Lockwood clearly didn’t believe her, but he didn’t push further. He let go of her hand. "Don’t worry about anything else. Go get some rest."
"Okay." Chloe Sterling went back to her room.
Jasper Lockwood strode into his study and summoned Henry Chamberlain. "Find out where Madam had an accident today, and how it happened. Now!"
"Madam was in an accident?" Henry Chamberlain looked stunned.
Jasper Lockwood’s lips thinned into a hard line as he stared coldly at him.
A chill ran down Henry Chamberlain’s spine. "Yes, Sir. I’ll look into it right away."
"I want results within the hour."
"...Yes, Sir."
Half an hour later, a trembling Henry Chamberlain entered the study. "Sir..."
"Do you have something?" Jasper Lockwood’s voice was glacial.
"Not yet. The surveillance footage from the section of road where Madam’s accident occurred has been wiped. We can’t find anything. Our team is working on recovery..."
Jasper Lockwood’s sharp eyes narrowed. His lips barely moved. "Who wiped it? That hacker friend of hers?"
Henry Chamberlain replied, "No, it was a different hacker. It looks like someone targeted Madam. Is it possible she doesn’t know?"
Jasper Lockwood remained silent. He didn’t know whether Chloe knew or not, but her refusal to talk was a clear sign that something was wrong.
After a moment, he abruptly stood up. "Message me the second you have anything."
With that, he strode out of the study.
Back in her room, Chloe Sterling frowned slightly as she looked at the gauze on her arm. ’He saw it after all.’
’She figured Jasper was probably looking into the incident right now, but he wouldn’t find anything. Jean Kensington had already told her that Silas Coldwell’s hackers deleted the traffic footage from the intersection.’
’Silas Coldwell had done it to protect her. If those people found out she had helped him, it would undoubtedly cause trouble for her.’
Chloe suddenly felt a surge of irritation. Just then, her door was pushed open and Jasper Lockwood walked in.
She froze for a second, watching him in silence.
Jasper Lockwood walked over and sat down beside her. His sharp eyes bore into hers as his lips parted. "A simple traffic accident needs a hacker to delete the security footage? Chloe, tell me the truth!"
