62 -58: Dunuo

Dunuo took the money pouch from Luo’er, revealing his dark, yellow teeth in a grin and breathed out a foul stench of alcohol.

Luo’er involuntarily wrinkled his nose and took a step back.

Dunuo glanced at Luo’er, then said in a leisurely manner, “Tomorrow afternoon, wait for me at this tavern.

Make sure you bring enough money!”

“Why not in the morning?” asked Luo’er.

“Is it you seeking me or am I seeking you?” Dunuo retorted after taking a sip of his drink.

“I’m sorry, then I’ll wait for you here tomorrow afternoon.

I hope you’ll hold up your end of the deal!” said Luo’er, neither humble nor arrogant.

“If you don’t bring enough money, don’t blame me for turning hostile!”

“I understand!”

As he left the tavern, Luo’er took a deep breath.

Even though the air outside on the streets wasn’t much better, it was still an improvement from indoors.

Looking back at the tavern one last time, he fell into deep thought.

Although the other party had agreed to take him to the assassins’ guild, he still couldn’t help but worry.

Ever since they left Yazhi City, things had never gone smoothly for them.

The previous attack was still fresh in his mind, and Luo’er knew as long as they did not find the mastermind, they would constantly face threats from the shadows.

This sense of unease filled his every day in the Otherworld, where he would often wake from nightmares, wondering if they were being watched from the shadows.

As non-human species, they were inherently opposed to the inhabitants of the Otherworld, which caused him to distrust any Otherworlders.

People were continuously passing by the tavern entrance and the stone slab streets were covered in dust that was stirred up by passing carriages, filling the air with dust.

The little girl named Kali, was nowhere to be found, it seemed like she already had run off with her looted weapon in search of her next target.

Luo’er felt no guilt about having disarmed the bearded adventurer.

He could have killed him on the spot if he wanted to, but he did not wish to stir up trouble and had decided to spare him.

Now that he had obtained an important lead, Luo’er no longer needed to gather more information on the streets.

He made his way to their temporary lodging.

Although the streets weaved and turned, he managed to find his way to the inn effortlessly with the memories in his mind.

The dimly-lit inn was still largely empty; the innkeeper snoozed at the bar.

Luo’er, without disturbing him, went upstairs to their room.

Upon opening the door, Luo’er immediately noticed Baiyue, seated by the window.

She was at the table, engrossed in writing something.

Sensing Luo’er’s presence, she glanced up, quickly confirmed it was him, then went back to her writing.

“What are you writing?” Luo’er asked while standing at the door, out of politeness, he did not try to see what she was writing.

Baiyue did not speak, just shook her head, and closed her blank notebook, before securing the safety of the magic crystal gun she had at hand.

After she closed the notebook, Luo’er sat down opposite her, observing her.

Sensing Luo’er’s gaze, Baiyue looked away, avoiding eye contact.

Luo’er coughed to break the awkward silence, then asked, “Has anything out of the ordinary happened while we weren’t here?”

Again, Baiyue did not say anything but only shook her head.

They fell back into an awkward silence.

Luo’er looked around awkwardly and rubbed his head.

He then said, “Well, I am going to see if there is anything edible downstairs.

I’ll cook something tonight.

After a day of hard work, don’t let them suffer by eating bread with salted water and potatoes.”

As he got up to leave, he noticed Baiyue also rising.

She adjusted the hood on her head, revealing her mysterious eyes, but she didn’t dare to look at him directly and softly said with her head lowered, “I’ll go too.”

“Uh, let’s go together.” Luo’er was startled, he hadn’t expected Baiyue to volunteer to come along.

They went downstairs together, side by side.

It was rare for Baiyue to walk alongside him, which made Luo’er feel strangely uneasy.

He glanced at Baiyue, who was a head shorter than him.

She was always wearing a hood, and even their close companions had never seen her true face underneath.

It seemed she noticed Luo’er’s gaze, and Baiyue looked down.

Luo’er paused, then shifted his gaze.

They went to the front desk of the inn, and briefly spoke to the innkeeper who showed no interest in cooking.

With Luo’er offering to cook, the innkeeper indicated the location of the kitchen and went back to dozing.

In the kitchen, Luo’er inspected the ingredients; they only had some potatoes.

These were produce from Earth.

After the war thirty years ago, Earth sent a great amount of agricultural supplies and technology to the Otherworld, significantly improving the latter’s agriculture.

Potatoes, an essential reserve grain, were introduced to the Otherworld during that time.

The technology exports over thirty years enabled rapid population growth in the Otherworld.

According to conservative estimates from Earth, the population of the Otherworld had increased by at least 300 million due to this.

After a quick inspection, Luo’er decided to make a stew with the available ingredients so that they wouldn’t complain about having to eat bread with saltwater potatoes.

Although Baiyue wasn’t trained in cooking, she was an excellent assistant.

With her help, Luo’er fluidly prepared the meal ingredients.

Before long, they had cooked a hearty meal.

At dinner, all their companions gathered in the inn to discuss the information they had collected throughout the day.

The meal Luo’er cooked greatly boosted their appetite.

As they savored their stew, they shared about the day’s events.

Luo’er shared with them the intelligence he had received today.

After listening to his analysis, Hu Daoke asked a question that was not at all related to the intelligence: “You alone are going to meet another untraceable drunkard with an untraceable young girl?”

“Ah,” Luo’er was taken aback and stuttered for a moment, “er…

I, uh…”

Cheng Ziang remained silent but stared at him with icy eyes.

Hu Daoke’s worry was justified.

If Luo’er went alone to meet another person of unknown origin, and it turned out to be a trap, he might never return, and they would not even be able to find his trail.

When operating in the Otherworld, they must always remain exceptionally vigilant.

They must always treat the Otherworld people as enemies and not trust them excessively.

“Sorry, I was wrong.

I just wanted to find the assassins’ alliance as soon as possible.” After stuttering for a while, Luo’er apologized to them with a bow.

“Alright, alright,” Hu Daoke waved his hand to interrupt him, then said, “I’m not blaming you.

I just think your approach is very risky.”

Er…” Luo’er hesitated for a while, then asked, “What does everyone think about this man named Dunuo?”

“From your description, I don’t think he sounds very reliable.” Hu Daoke shrugged and said.

“200 gold coins are no joke.

We don’t have that much money now.” Tangmo pulled out their purse that contained just over fifty gold coins for operation expenses.

“If necessary, I will apply to the headquarters for operational funds,” Luo’er asserted.

“Can we really trust this person?” Hu Daoke asked.

“I can’t guarantee it, but I think it’s worth trying,” Luo’er calmly analyzed.

“Well, Sister Moumou and I got nothing today, just some extraordinary news.” Hu Daoke looked at Tangmo while speaking, the latter guiltily looked away without telling Luo’er that they had spent most of the day shopping.

“I reconned the terrain of the East District and drew a map.” Cheng Ziang glared at Hu Daoke and pulled out a roll of paper from his pocket, on which he clumsily sketched the distinctive buildings of most parts of the East District.

Luo’er took a look.

Although Cheng Ziang’s map was crude, it was a valuable reference for them.

“Here,” Luo’er pointed to a place on the map, “the tavern where that guy is located is here.”

The tavern where Luo’er met Dunuo was situated in the northern region of the East District, far from the bustling and chaotic central city.

There was a trade market nearby, so there was a large crowd.

“Tomorrow afternoon, we need to meet him at this location, and then he will lead us to the assassins’ alliance,” Luo’er pointed at the spot and told the others.

“Are we going?” Hu Daoke asked everyone.

Cheng Ziang nodded but did not speak.

Luo’er began, “I think it’s necessary to try.

If we can find the assassins’ alliance, we can find another clue to the arms smuggling case.”

“Let’s do it then, we snatch him and interrogate him, we make it a no-cost deal!” Hu Daoke rubbed his hands and suggested.

“Is that really a good idea?

We should at least leave ourselves a way out.” Luo’er scratched his head, rendered speechless by Hu Daoke’s suggestion.

“That’s 200 gold coins!” Hu Daoke said, looking at the purse on the table.

“That’s something the headquarters should worry about.

We don’t have to cough up the money ourselves,” Cheng Ziang gave him a glance and remarked coldly.

“So what are your plans?” Hu Daoke asked, spreading his hands out.

After some meditation, Luo’er said, “Just in case, we should make some preparations. fгeewebnovёl.com

Tomorrow Cheng Ziang and I will meet him.

Little Ke and Yue’er will form a sniper team, and Moumou will stay at the inn.”

“What about me?” Tangmo pointed at himself, asking weakly.

“You’ll be in charge of contacting headquarters.

If we don’t return to the inn before dawn the next day, report to the higher-ups that we’re dead, then evacuate from Holy Heart City with the rest,” Luo’er said.

“Will it be dangerous?” Hearing Luo’er’s account, Tangmo couldn’t help but tense up and asked him anxiously.

“Don’t worry, it’s just a contingency plan,” Luo’er reassured him, then turned to Hu Daoke and pointed at the map.

“According to the map, there are five prominent buildings around the meeting point, which could serve as high points.

Tomorrow you and Yue’er should recon those spots to see if they provide good sniping points.

If we encounter an ambush, you two will be ready to support us.”

“Understood!” Hu Daoke signaled confidently.
