79 -75: Rescue Plan

“Are you all right?” Luo’er asked the Sub-beastman child hiding behind Baiyue.

The child remained silent, just peeping out to look at them furtively.

“That’s one of our companions, he’s not a bad guy!” Luo’er pointed at Hu Daoke and explained.

The child still did not respond, maintaining a resistant behavior towards Hu Daoke.

Sighing, Luo’er firmly pulled his hand out of Tangmo’s embrace and said, “Moumou, you and Baiyue calm him down.

The rest of you, come with me!”

“Oh!” Having been forcibly separated by Luo’er, Tangmo was somewhat unhappy, but she still obediently walked towards Baiyue and the Sub-beastman child.

The three men stood together, looking at the bodies sprawling on the ground.

Hu Daoke pointed at them and hesitantly asked, “Who are they…?”

“Beastmen!” Luo’er said.

“Hmm…” Hu Daoke muttered, waving a hand in front of his nose with a disgusted expression on his face.

“What’s wrong?” Luo’er asked.

“Just to clarify, I’m not with these guys!” Hu Daoke pointed at the corpses and made it clear that he was not associated with them.

“I know that of course!” Luo’er said, unable to decide whether to laugh or cry.

Cheng Ziang carefully examined the bodies, furrowing his eyebrows.

Suddenly, he covered his nose, and, ignoring his nausea, opened a Beastman’s mouth and took a small bloody finger from its mouth.

He looked at Luo’er, frowning.

“This is…” Luo’er looked at the finger, it’s size similar to that of the sub-beastman.

Then, he slowly said with much uncertainty, “a Sub-beastman’s…finger…”

“You mean they are cannibals?!” Hu Daoke stared at him wide-eyed.

Luo’er frowned, recalling the stories his parents had once told him.

Then, with some reassurance, he said, “During the Second Otherworld War, there were cases of Beastmen eating corpses on the battlefield.”

“Ugh…” Hu Daoke gagged.

He clearly could not stomach such a revolting reality.

“What are you disgusted for?

It’s not like you’re the one eating it!” Cheng Ziang threw away the finger, wiped his hands, then turned and said coldly.

“We don’t know exactly what’s happened yet, but judging from the situation earlier, I’m more inclined to believe the Beastmen were hunting the child.

The actual situation, however, can only be clarified by him.”

By the campfire, Tangmo was trying to comfort the Sub-beastman child.

He nestled next to Baiyue, his eyes wide as he watched Tangmo, his expression somewhat relaxed.

Luo’er brought the other two to the campfire.

He sat on the ground, facing the Sub-beastman child and then asked, “Little one, you speak the Tasta language, right?”

The Sub-beastchild glanced at Luo’er, and then at Tangmo.

In haste, Tangmo comforted him, “It’s okay.

Wasn’t it him who saved you earlier?

Are you still worried he’s a bad guy?”

“What’s your name?” Luo’er asked formally.

After hesitating for a while, the Sub-beastman child reluctantly spoke, “I, my name is…Taran…”

“Taran,” Luo’er repeated his name, then continued, “Do you know these people?”

“They are Kagulus!” As soon as the Beastmen were mentioned, Taran’s voice started to tremble.

In Tasta, Kagulu meant barbarian.

Evidently, Earth’s official term ‘Beastman’ didn’t quite fit this translation or phonetic interpretation.

God knows what was going through the minds of the United Nations investigators back then.

“Why did they capture you?” Luo’er asked next.

“They, they…” As he recalled the event, Taran immediately broke into tears, his voice trembling, “They attacked our village and captured everyone to use as food…”

Luo’er exchanged glances with the others, and then asked, “So, you’re the only one who escaped, right?”

“Yes,” Taran nodded, his gaze vacant and sad.

Suddenly, as if remembering something, he pleaded with Luo’er, “Please, please sir, save our village.

Otherwise, my grandfather and everyone will…”

“At least several dozen Beastmen capable of taking down a village.

It won’t be easy to deal with them, just the five of us.” Luo’er said with hesitation.

“Please, sir, save our village!” Taran fell on his knees in front of Luo’er, pleading after leaving Baiyue’s side.

“Luo’er…” Tangmo called out to him.

Although she didn’t say anything more, Luo’er could guess her thoughts from her eyes.

He looked at the others in the team; Cheng Ziang simply shrugged, indicating indifference.

Hu Daoke also remarked, “Why are you looking at me?

If you want to do it, just do it!”

Luo’er gritted his teeth, his mind tormented.

He wanted to refuse the request.

After all, they were facing an unknown number of Beastmen.

Even with advanced weapons, they were bound to face casualties.

“Luo’er…” Suddenly, the usually silent Baiyue spoke up.

She looked at him with pleading eyes, an expression Luo’er had never seen before.

After being silent for a long moment, Luo’er asked: “Kid, do you know how many of them there are?”

“Fifty, no, seventy…eighty…” Taran was apparently excited by Luo’er’s reply.

His lips trembled as he counted nervously on his fingers.

“How many exactly?” Luo’er frowned, lifting his gaze to ask.

“I…I don’t know…” Taran replied weakly, fearful that Luo’er might refuse to help if he became upset.

Luo’er sighed deeply, then continued questioning, “Do you know the way around your village?”

“Yes!” Taran nodded, and with trembling hands, he pointed towards the foot of the mountain.

“Can you draw a map of your village?” Luo’er asked.

“Yes!” Despite some hesitation, Taran finally nodded.

“Draw it!” Luo’er threw a piece of paper and pencil to him without hesitation.

“If you want to save your villagers, you’d better draw carefully!” At the end of his order, Luo’er issued a stern warning.

“Yes!” Taran nodded hastily and began to sketch an awkward map of their village.

After a while, Taran finished drawing a simple and somewhat juvenile map of the village.

Luo’er shook his head and chuckled at the sight of it.

After clarifying the village’s exact location, he handed the map to Baiyue and Hu Daoke.

“Scout for potential sniping positions, survey the terrain, and estimate the approximate number of enemy troops!” Said Luo’er.

He took out his pocket watch and looked at it, then said, “We don’t have much time if we want to save them.

Return in three hours, and we’ll launch our attack at dawn!”

“Understood!” Hu Daoke agreed, and he and Baiyue hurriedly started their mission.

After sending them off, Luo’er continued to inquire Taran about their village.

Luo’er learned from Taran that these Beastmen attacks started a few decades ago, as their village used to be elsewhere before that.

The Sub-beastmen are a minor race on the continent, and no one knows their origin.

They lived a nomadic life like the gypsies.

Thirty-one years ago, when the first Otherworld War broke out, the Sub-beastmen also joined the war, undertaking transportation duties for the alliance army.

After the war, the king of Oudaluo, recognizing the contributions of the Sub-beastmen, allowed them to settle permanently in the Oudaluo Kingdom.

A group of Sub-beastmen moved to the foot of the Namijiya Mountain Range and settled there.

The Beastmen attacks started about a decade ago.

Two significant Beastman tribes live on the Kabarguru Peninsula.

They occasionally erupt into civil war.

During these times of chaos, some rogue Beastman soldiers seize the opportunity to cross the Namijiya Mountain Range and raid the Oudaluo Kingdom.

The route to the Kabarguru Peninsula from Oudaluo passes through a mountain pass where the king of Oudaluo has built a fortress.

As the fortress faces the setting sun to the west, it’s named Sunset Fortress.

To enter Oudaluo through regular routes, one must inevitably pass through Sunset Fortress.

But, it was impossible for the rogue Beastman soldiers to penetrate the Oudaluo territory through Sunset Fortress heavily guarded by Oudaluo army.

Therefore, the only explanation was that they crossed the mountain range directly to enter Oudaluo.

Considering these points, Luo’er concluded that the Beastman group couldn’t be large and probably had no reinforcements.

That’s why they occupied the Sub-beastmen village and used them as a source of food supply.

Luo’er ultimately estimated there were less than a hundred Beastmen invading the village.

Such numbers were virtually insignificant in face of their superior firepower.

Despite their single combat experience, during which the enemy was familiar with weapon combinations and tactical strategies and had territorial advantage, they were put in an utterly disadvantageous position.

Now, Luo’er and Hu Daoke alone possessed a powerful firepower, a combination that was almost impossible to find among an adventuring team.

Luo’er was confident that if the Beastmen charged at them, he and Hu Daoke could end the battle in less than five minutes and eliminate all enemies, not to mention they also had the genius mage, Tangmo, as backup.

Three hours later, Baiyue and Hu Daoke returned with a detailed map.

Unlike Taran’s sloppy and childish map, the one drawn by Baiyue was very accurate.

Using the bright moonlight, they had found a suitable sniping position and had thoroughly sketched the village’s layout.

The map showed that the village layout was an irregular rectangle.

A river flowed from west to east and eventually joined the Lanfei River.

Due to the Coriolis effect, the river continued to erode southwards, forming an alluvial plain in the north.

So, the river took a half circle around the western part of the village, which was built on the alluvial plain.

The observation post for the sniping team was located to the southwest of the village, across the river, about 200 meters from the edges of the village and about 800 meters further away at its furthest.

From there, they could oversee the entire village, making it an ideal sniping spot.

The village spread irregularly in all directions from the small square at its center, but it did not cross the river.

A wooden bridge that connected the two banks was built where the river ran through the village.

To the west of the village was the Namijiya Mountain Range, from where, according to Taran, the Beastmen had launched their attack.
