Our Love Story: Hard to Guard Against the Sudden Love Strike-Chapter 367 - 348: Sienna Thornton Becomes Suspicious
"Rhonda, tell me," Sienna Thornton requested again.
Rhonda Wagner glanced at Aurora Buckley and Rochelle Linwood, gesturing toward the door with her chin, signaling for them to step outside for a moment.
Once the door closed, only Rhonda Wagner and Sienna Thornton remained in the conference room.
Rhonda swallowed, looked at Sienna, and said, "The evidence that has come to light in the past two days, aside from the content from the surveillance blind spot outside the law firm’s entrance which I found, all the other evidence was found by Dean Thorne."
"Dean Thorne?" Sienna was taken aback. "Do you mean Quentin Thorne?"
Rhonda nodded.
It took Sienna a while to recover from the shock. "Do you know why Dean Thorne is helping?"
Rhonda shook her head, initially thinking it might have been Simon Forrester who asked Quentin Thorne for help. However, upon further contemplation, why would Quentin specifically instruct that these details remain unknown to Sienna if that were the case?
Surely, there is more to this than meets the eye.
Rhonda didn’t say more, retrieving the case files from the folder, she continued, "On the night of the incident, footage from a dashcam has shown that after the victim made an emergency stop on the roadside, no one approached her vehicle during the time until she passed out on the steering wheel at 10:10 PM due to carbon monoxide poisoning."
Sienna was surprised, "Wasn’t it said that she was knocked out?"
Rhonda looked down, searching through the files, "The coroner’s report showed no signs of external injuries..."
Sienna: "..."
She recalled a couple of days ago, during Seth Sutton’s interrogation, he accused her of knocking out Nina Sinclair out of jealousy, leading to her death due to carbon monoxide poisoning in a closed car with the heater on. Realizing she was coerced, Sienna shook with anger.
Noticing her expression, Rhonda asked quickly, "What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?"
Sienna then explained the situation to Rhonda.
Hearing this, Rhonda was also incensed, straightforwardly declaring, "We can file a complaint!"
Though Sienna was furious, she wasn’t about to cause trouble at this critical juncture. She then asked, "Based on the current evidence, is it confirmed that this case was an accident?"
"Yes."
"Any word from the police on when the case will officially close?"
"It should be within these few days."
Sienna nodded, asking no more about the case, thanked Rhonda for her help, and made plans to have dinner together that evening before returning to her office.
Sitting down, she immediately took out her phone, intending to call Simon Forrester, but paused, feeling that it was unclear to explain over the phone, deciding instead to ask him in person that night.
Unexpectedly, before the law office closed, Simon Forrester arrived directly.
At that time, Sienna was engrossed in handling a foreign trade agency dispute case. When Simon walked in, she wasn’t in the mood to discuss Quentin Thorne’s issue. Once she finished her immediate tasks and could relax, it was already time to leave work.
All the firm’s assistants and clerks hitched rides with the three partners to "The Imperial Court Club" for dinner. Simon Forrester and Sienna Thornton were hosting a thank-you dinner for their support and help with Sienna’s case.
The entire private room was full of young people, and the lively atmosphere made Sienna reflect, despite her recent 48-hour stint at the police station.
If not for Quentin Thorne’s assistance in finding evidence, she might still be shedding tears behind bars.
The party lasted late into the night. Sienna had a few drinks, getting a bit tipsy. As soon as she got into the car on her way back home, she leaned against Simon Forrester and drifted off to sleep. Once home, she went straight to bed without even showering.
.
In the early morning, at the West District Police Department dormitory.
Seth Sutton finished showering, shaved clean, and upon emerging from the bathroom, his roommate whistled and yelled, "Wow! Our captain is all cleaned up, going out on a date?"
Seth tossed the towel from his shoulder over, "Date at this hour?"
He pulled out a pair of khaki cargo pants and a black long-sleeved shirt from the wardrobe, topped it off with his usual black trench coat, seemingly unbothered by Brimfield’s harsh January cold.
Seeing Seth getting fully dressed with shoes and all, his roommate laughed, "All dressed up, and you say it’s not a date?!"
Seth ignored him and walked out the door.
As he exited the dormitory building, a gust of chilly wind hit, numbing his face. Just as he was about to pull up his coat’s hood, his phone buzzed in his pocket, vibrating against his leg uncomfortably. Upon checking the caller ID, his expression turned grim.
He answered, his tone as cold as the pre-dawn air in Brimfield, "Speak."
Whatever was said on the other end made his face change, and he coldly responded, "You’d better not regret it," before ending the call abruptly with a click, his face darkening.
He returned to his office to continue reviewing the "West Suburb Avenue case", planning to submit it for closure the following morning if all seemed well.
.
Three days later.
Sienna Thornton was about to head out for business when she encountered Rhonda Wagner returning from outside while going downstairs.
Rhonda said, "The police have closed that case."
Sienna fell silent for a moment, then gave a faint, resigned smile, "Okay, got it."
Observing Sienna’s troubled expression, Rhonda asked, "Are you alright?"
Sienna shook her head, smiling, "I’m fine, I just have some things to take care of. If I’m out late, I won’t be back tonight."
"Alright," Rhonda nodded, looking at her with concern, "Take care and drive safely."
"Will do!" Sienna smiled as she descended the stairs, but once she turned the corner, her smile vanished entirely.
She got into her car, weighed down with her thoughts, feeling utterly drained of any emotion.
.
"The case is closed now. Keep an eye out for any online posts or news about Lawyer Thornton over the next few days. No matter what they say, make sure to take them down! If you can’t, let me know and I’ll handle it!" said Simon Forrester before slamming the phone down with a clatter.
Sitting across from him, Harrison Rowe and Logan Lockwood exchanged cautious glances.
Logan asked, "The case didn’t stir much. Why are you so worried about the closure?"
Simon, not in the mood to explain, swiveled his chair, facing the floor-to-ceiling window behind him.
Staring at the imitation of serene hills and clear water in the yard below, he lightly tapped the armrest with his index and middle fingers, frowning as he contemplated the upcoming storms he might have to weather.
Harrison whispered to Logan, "The boss is concerned that the Sinclair Family won’t accept Jane’s accidental death and may cause trouble."
"What kind of trouble? Protesting at the law firm or police station?" 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
"I heard the Sinclair Family is involved in chain education training, so..."
Logan shivered at the thought.
Reflecting on the challenges Simon might face next, he felt guilty, "It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have let Jane join us in the first place..."
At this point, with his back to them, Simon lifted his right hand, signaling twice, "You can all leave now. Discussing this further won’t help."
