Out of Control: Into Your Everything-Chapter 165: Selfishness
Julian Ford gracefully sidestepped, avoiding the ashtray that smashed to pieces on the floor.
"Your brother endured endless torment to protect you, and this is how you repay him?! If you had been aware back then, if you could have shared some of the burden, even lasted half a day longer, he wouldn’t have died on the very day the police rescued you!"
"You were right by your brother’s side, more than anyone else you knew, if only for ten minutes, if you had endured for him, he wouldn’t have died!"
"And now you tell me this kind of thing, how can you live with yourself?! If he knew from beyond the grave that the brother he protected with his life turned out to be so selfish, disregarding the family interest, how would he feel?!"
The nonchalant smile on Julian Ford’s face gradually faded under Ezra Ford’s word-for-word interrogation.
His dark eyes were icy cold, devoid of any warmth.
"A selfish and self-centered person like me, wasn’t I taught by both you and Mother."
"The son you love and admire has always been only my brother, why should I consider you at all."
Julian Ford’s chilly tone was calm as stagnant water.
He said nothing more.
Some feelings, even after decades, remain unchanged; a few words can’t alter anything.
Only when he turned away, he warned, "If you have any dissatisfaction with my girlfriend, feel free to come at me. But if Scarlett Shaw suffers any harm because of you, don’t blame me, your selfish son, for doing even more selfish things."
...
Scarlett Shaw had just stepped out of the Veridian office building after work when her phone rang with a call from Jasper Spencer.
At this point, it was obvious he was calling deliberately at this exact time.
Scarlett answered the call.
"Scarlett, are you free now? Let’s have a meal together?"
"Not free."
"..."
As a persuasive speaker, Jasper Spencer was evidently unqualified. Scarlett’s refusal left him at a loss for words.
Seeing his silence, Scarlett proactively said, "If you want me to persuade Julian Ford to let Liam Spencer go, I can tell you right now, not only can I not, but I also want to smash your clueless head."
Jasper Spencer was at a loss too.
The matter of Liam Spencer’s substance abuse, if his family weren’t involved in politics, spending a few days in jail would be a minor issue. But the Spencer Family is involved deeply, and now Liam’s parents are trying to figure something out with the Ford family. As his cousin, as soon as the family learned he knew Scarlett Shaw, they immediately urged him to talk to Scarlett.
"I didn’t want to do this job either."
Jasper Spencer pulled out a cigarette and sighed while smoking.
"But the family forced me to do it, even if I have to put on a show, I have to talk about this with you."
Scarlett furrowed her brows, "Even if you’re in a difficult position, Jasper Spencer, you’re not someone who can’t tell right from wrong. Your cousin abused substances, it’s not merely about him offending me and Yana Yarrow, he’s crossing the legal line!"
Jasper Spencer remained silent.
Scarlett wasn’t in a hurry for his reply either, she sat on the edge of a roadside flowerbed and waited for him to speak.
After a long while, Jasper Spencer suddenly said, "Liam’s parents are trying to figure something out with the Ford family and have offered a huge benefit to Ezra Ford. They’re determined to spend money to avoid calamity. If Julian Ford insists on not letting Liam go because of you, have you considered what kind of pressure he would face from the Ford family?"
Scarlett tightened her grip on her phone, her fingertips pale.
Jasper Spencer: "The news of you dating him should have spread within the Ford family by now, right? Have you been given any trouble?"
Scarlett: "..."
"I guess not."
Jasper Spencer laughed helplessly.
"I’ve said all along, Julian Ford is protective, as soon as something like this happens, he definitely won’t let you suffer any grievances. But you just continue to enjoy his protection without a shred of concern for him?"
Honestly, after saying this and seeing Scarlett’s silent attitude, Jasper Spencer even felt like he was gradually getting into the rhythm as a persuasive speaker.
He knew he was being despicable.
Knowing full well Scarlett and Julian Ford were thinking of each other, yet exploiting this emotion to provoke Scarlett.
"Jasper Spencer, provocation tactics don’t work on me."
The phone call carried Scarlett’s utterly calm voice.
As if she was completely unaffected by his words.
"If at this moment, under the guise of considering Julian Ford, I persuade him to let Liam go, that would be truly foolish. He’s going all out to vent for me, and not only am I not appreciative, I’m negating his actions, do you think I’d do something like that?"
"..."
This left Jasper Spencer speechless.
Jasper Spencer wasn’t articulate by nature, those few words were beyond his usual level, now his brain overloaded, entering a state of shutdown.
"Don’t waste your energy on me."
Scarlett continued.
She suddenly thought of something and added, "Liam didn’t just hurt me, he almost violated and harassed Yana. Right now, pleading for Liam is like personally destroying something precious."
Jasper Spencer frowned and asked in a deep voice, "What precious thing?"
Scarlett directly hung up the phone.
However, her whole being was dispirited, with no trace of the satisfaction from winning a verbal spar.
What Jasper Spencer said certainly wouldn’t change her mind, but those words were a real part of reality.
In this matter, she can’t help Julian Ford at all.
The more firmly she expressed her love for him, the deeper she actually pushed him into a predicament.
The night breeze of late spring carried hints of summer’s heat.
Time passed like a fleeting moment.
Unknowingly, she and he had already walked through a spring season.
What about this time next year?
Would the people around them still be each other?
Scarlett sat at the edge of the flowerbed, her head buried in her palm, her palms turning damp as the fear of losing Julian Ford instantaneously occupied her heart in the warm spring breeze, making her so sad that she could hardly breathe.
She suddenly realized clearly that she was actually the one who was pretentious and hypocritical.
In front of Josiah Sutton, she pretended to have a deep understanding of Julian Ford, pompously claiming she was considering his feelings, then feigned ignorance about his illness, when in truth, she was evading reality, using it as an excuse to indulge in the benefits that come from dating him.
From the beginning, she never once genuinely considered what their future would look like at this point.
She only wanted to make her own life better.
"Hiding to overthink brings nothing else but trouble."
The spring warmth came with a clear male voice.
Scarlett stiffened all over, keeping herself buried in her knees, not daring to look up.
Julian Ford looked down, seeing Scarlett Shaw, having buried herself completely, appearing small and insignificant, yet unknowingly occupying all of his heart.
