Overpowered Resident Doctor-Chapter 48: I Can Handle It
The second patient Yan Feifan treated this morning was a girl with a short ponytail who looked to be about seventeen or eighteen.
Her left palm had been sliced open by a sharp object, leaving a gash nearly three centimeters long and half a centimeter deep.
Yan Feifan also noticed that both her hands were pale and wrinkled from being soaked in water, and her clothes were quite plain.
What was more striking was the long, old scar on her left cheek that ran across her eyelid. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞
The scar started at her left brow bone, cut across her left eyelid, and extended all the way to her lower jaw.
It was about fourteen or fifteen centimeters long and almost a centimeter at its widest point.
After finishing the first stitch on the girl’s palm, Yan Feifan asked, partly to make conversation and partly to distract her, "How did you get that scar on your face?"
The girl with the short ponytail looked away, not daring to watch her wound being sutured, though she couldn’t help but steal quick glances now and then.
"When I was little, I was being naughty, climbing a tree to pick wild fruit. I accidentally fell and got scratched by a branch."
Yan Feifan hummed in acknowledgment before asking, "Have you ever thought about getting plastic surgery to remove the scar?"
The girl with the short ponytail nodded. "I have. After I came to Binhai, I even made a special trip to ask a doctor."
"The doctor said it would cost over ten thousand yuan to remove this scar."
"Right now, I work as a kitchen helper at a restaurant, washing vegetables and dishes. They cover my room and board, and I can earn two thousand a month."
"I send one thousand home to my family and save one thousand for myself."
"In about a year, I should be able to save up enough for the surgery."
Seeing the girl’s hopeful expression as she endured the pain, Yan Feifan couldn’t help but steal a glance at Wang Chuan standing beside him.
When he saw Wang Chuan’s impassive face, Yan Feifan cursed inwardly.
’No wonder he can afford a huge villa. What a crook.’
’Charging over ten thousand for a scar like this, for a surgery that takes less than an hour.’
’So heartless.’
Suddenly, an idea struck Yan Feifan. He said tentatively, "Um, actually, I’m a plastic surgeon myself, in a way."
"I treat wounds for accident victims in the ER, mainly to practice my plastic surgery skills for wound care."
"This scar on your face... I can remove it for you."
Yan Feifan quickly added, "For free."
"Really?" The girl with the short ponytail looked at him in disbelief.
Yan Feifan finished another stitch. "My name is Yan Feifan. I’m a doctor of clinical medicine."
"You can ask around. I’m a well-known doctor at the Affiliated Hospital, not some kind of scammer."
"This wound on your hand can’t get wet for at least a week, which means you won’t be able to work for a few days. You’ll have time on your hands."
"Removing the scar on your face is a minor procedure. You won’t need to be hospitalized. You can go home and rest right after."
"That way, both injuries can heal at the same time."
Yan Feifan glanced at Wang Chuan again. Seeing no reaction, he continued persuading the girl, "To be honest, I’d be using the scar on your face for practice."
"But I promise you, after I perform the scar removal surgery, I can’t say it will vanish completely, but it will be much, much less noticeable than it is now!"
"With a little bit of thick makeup, you’ll be able to hide it so others can’t see it."
This was a significant understatement on Yan Feifan’s part.
In his mind, he was confident that unless someone pressed their face right up to hers and stared, they wouldn’t be able to see the scar at all.
"You can really do that?"
"And for free?"
Hearing her questions, Yan Feifan knew the girl was tempted.
He skillfully tied a knot in the suture, snipped off the excess thread, and emphasized, "I can absolutely do it."
"And yes, it’s really free of charge."
A thought occurred to Yan Feifan, and he quickly added, "You still have to pay for this emergency visit, though."
"When I said free, I meant the surgery for the scar on your face. I won’t charge you for that."
"I understand, I understand!"
The girl with the short ponytail said eagerly, "If I can save over ten thousand yuan, it doesn’t matter if the scar removal isn’t perfect."
"I’ll do the surgery. I’m willing to do it."
She then asked, "Should we do it right now?"
Before Yan Feifan could answer, Wang Chuan, who had been standing by and watching quietly, suddenly interjected, "Not now!"
"Go home and think it over carefully. Discuss it with the adults in your family. If you still decide to go through with it, come back here at eight tonight."
"Eight tonight?"
"Okay, I’ll be here. I’ll definitely be here..."
Yan Feifan saw the girl with the treated wound out of the cubicle, then turned to find Wang Chuan scowling at him.
He defended himself, "Director, the whole reason you have me here is to improve my skills. With such a great opportunity for practice right in front of me, I naturally had to go for it."
Wang Chuan snorted. "Yan Feifan, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to seize this chance to practice. I support that."
"But are you overestimating yourself?"
Wang Chuan explained, "Her scar might seem simple: excise the keloid skin, treat and flatten the scarred muscle tissue, then just pull the skin from both sides together and suture it."
"But how do you plan to handle the scar on her left eyelid?"
Wang Chuan said mockingly, "Did you really think that fee of over ten thousand yuan is so easy to earn?"
"For the removal of that scar on her eyelid, even if I were the one operating, the slightest mistake could result in asymmetry between her eyes’ size and shape."
"Let me tell you, a scar like the one on her eyelid can’t be handled by anyone less than a director-level plastic surgeon."
"And you think you can handle it?"
Hearing this, Yan Feifan realized he had been rash and had oversimplified things.
Now that he had a more detailed understanding of plastic surgery, he knew it was anything but simple.
Take double eyelid surgery, for example—a seemingly simple minor procedure. It was easy to mess up.
But creating a pair of beautiful double eyelids was not an easy task.
Besides considering factors like face shape, eye shape, brow shape, and muscle texture, achieving perfect symmetry between the left and right incisions during the actual operation was no small feat.
All of this required honed technique and accumulated practical experience.
In the short-ponytail girl’s case, the scar on her eyelid was three to four millimeters wide. Excising the scarred eyelid skin and suturing the ends together would inevitably tighten the eyelid, causing a slight change in the shape of her left eye.
Of course, a person’s left and right eyes are not perfectly symmetrical to begin with.
Plenty of people have one monolid and one double eyelid.
But this asymmetry had to be within a reasonable limit.
If the change in her left eye’s shape was too great, making the difference between her left and right eyes obvious, then the surgery would be a failure.
’Maybe I could consider grafting a small section of eyelid skin?’
’But the eyelid is so thin... the required suturing skill would be incredibly high...’
Yan Feifan quickly simulated the surgical process in his mind. Meeting Wang Chuan’s gaze, he said, "Director, I can handle it..."
