Overpowered Resident Doctor-Chapter 71: The Heimlich Maneuver
At noon, Yan Feifan and Yu Suye left the teaching and research office together, ready to go to lunch.
The moment they stepped out of the emergency hall, two tall, handsome young men eagerly rushed over to greet them.
"Su Ye, I have two buffet coupons for the Jinxiu Grand Hotel. Why don’t we go for the buffet together?"
The other young man, not to be outdone, said, "What’s so good about a buffet? Su Ye, I’ve already booked a table at the Paris Restaurant..."
Yan Feifan had seen this kind of scene many times before.
Basically, every time mealtime rolled around, one or two overly confident young doctors would run over to eagerly invite Yu Suye to eat.
However, Yu Suye rarely accepted their invitations. Most of the time, she would return to her own apartment for meals.
Yan Feifan was about to walk away when he suddenly felt Yu Suye tugging on his sleeve.
He turned his head and saw her giving him a look.
"I already have plans with Mr. Yan for lunch today. We’re going to discuss the work our mentor assigned us."
"You two can make your own plans!"
After saying this, Yu Suye pulled Yan Feifan by the sleeve and quickly walked away, leaving the two young men glaring at each other angrily...
They were almost at Cafeteria Number One when Yan Feifan, noticing that Yu Suye showed no signs of changing direction, asked curiously, "Are you really going to eat at the cafeteria?"
"Didn’t you say the cafeteria food is too sweet and bland for your taste?"
Yu Suye sighed softly and said, "I’ll just have to make do with the cafeteria for lunch today."
"If I’m not mistaken, that guy who came looking for me this morning is probably waiting to ambush me at my apartment door."
Yan Feifan let out a soft "oh" and didn’t press the matter further.
Yu Suye ordered ham and egg fried rice and a bowl of black chicken soup.
Yan Feifan got one meat dish, two vegetable dishes, and rice.
Carrying their trays, the two found a relatively quiet, secluded corner and sat down to eat together.
Although they were both apprentices of Mr. Qin, it was quite rare for them to sit down and eat a meal together like this.
Yan Feifan sat down and started eating without ceremony.
Yu Suye took a sip of her black chicken soup and began to speak slowly, "The man who came looking for me this morning is from Jingcheng."
"He’s the marriage partner my parents arranged for me."
Yan Feifan was slightly taken aback. He then heard Yu Suye say sorrowfully, "The reason I came to Binhai from Jingcheng was partly because I genuinely admire our mentor’s skills, and partly because I wanted some peace and quiet, to get away from all the drama at home."
Yan Feifan stopped eating and asked, "With your medical talent, shouldn’t the Yu Family be fully supporting you, allowing you to grow without any distractions?"
Yu Suye let out a short, sarcastic laugh. "If I were a man, that would certainly be the case."
"Unfortunately, I’m a woman, and a rather good-looking one at that."
"Does the Yu Family favor men over women?" Yan Feifan asked bluntly.
Yu Suye nodded, saying with some indignation, "Yan Feifan, did you know?"
"To this day, the Yu Family’s traditional Chinese medicine heritage still follows the ancestral rule of only being passed down to men, not women."
"In the field of modern medicine, although there’s no obvious gender discrimination, most of the women study subjects like pharmaceuticals, lab work, and testing."
"Someone like me, studying clinical medicine, is a rarity."
Yu Suye added helplessly, "Many of my relatives either manage the family businesses or use family resources to engage in commerce."
"They don’t put in much effort, yet they live lives ten or even a hundred times more comfortable and luxurious than frontline medical workers."
"This conflict..."
At this point, Yu Suye stopped. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
She didn’t want to air her family’s dirty laundry in front of Yan Feifan.
Yu Suye steered the conversation back to herself. "Certain elders in my branch of the family think that the family doesn’t need another doctor."
"If I can marry into a good family, it could consolidate and enhance the vested interests of our branch."
Yan Feifan said with a hint of realization, "A classic rich family drama."
Yu Suye gave a bitter smile. "I suppose so. Although we all have the surname Yu, some are so distantly related that we’re third or fourth cousins."
"Each branch, each household, is still tangled up in matters of interest and status."
"I really just want to be a doctor, see patients, perform surgeries, and live a simple, fulfilling life every day."
"Yan Feifan, just like the life you’re living now..."
Yan Feifan couldn’t help but chuckle. "It’s like the ’fortress under siege’ Mr. Qian described. Everyone envies your life."
"But you want to get out and live a simple, quiet life..."
Just then, Yan Feifan’s phone started ringing urgently.
He took out his phone and saw it was a video call invitation from an unfamiliar local number.
Yan Feifan accepted the call.
While the phone screen was still shaking, a frantic woman’s voice burst out from the speaker.
"Xiaoyan, Xiaoyan, quick, take a look! Take a look! What’s wrong with my son?"
"I was only in the bathroom for a moment, and he ended up like this..."
The phone’s camera was shaking so violently that Yan Feifan couldn’t see anything clearly.
He instructed in a calm, deep voice, "Don’t panic. Hold the phone steady. I can’t see the screen."
Yan Feifan’s words had an effect; the video feed stabilized.
The instant the image became clear, he saw a little boy, about one or two years old, lying motionless on the sofa with purple lips.
’Choking! Asphyxiation!’
That was the first thought that popped into Yan Feifan’s mind.
At the same time, he recognized the little boy as the grandson of Mrs. Yang from Happiness Garden.
Just then, Yu Suye, who had leaned in to look, blurted out, "Ah, he’s choking!"
"Your son is choking!"
Yan Feifan spoke in a clear, piercing tone, "Don’t panic. Do exactly as I say."
"Sit down on the sofa..."
"Lay your son face down across your lap..."
"Support your son’s head with your hand, letting it hang slightly lower than his body..."
"With your other hand, aim for the spot between your son’s shoulder blades and give him a firm slap. Slap it hard..."
As soon as he finished speaking, a soft WHAP sounded from the phone.
Hearing this, Yan Feifan shouted into the phone, "Have you not eaten today?"
"Slap him harder! Slap him quickly..."
"If you want your son to live, you have to use force..."
Immediately after, a series of THUMPS came from the phone, each one louder than the last...
"Ah, it’s out! It’s out..."
"Xiaoyan, my son coughed up a peanut..."
"Xiaoyan..."
Yan Feifan cut her off loudly, "Check your son’s breathing and his heartbeat..."
"He’s breathing... and he has a heartbeat, too..."
Hearing this reply, Yan Feifan let out a long sigh of relief.
"Now, take your son to the hospital for a check-up. Call me again if there are any other problems..."
After ending the call, Yan Feifan and Yu Suye continued with their meal.
This lunch brought the two of them a little closer.
At the very least, Yan Feifan now knew that Yu Suye—who came from a privileged background and was blessed with talent, beauty, and a great figure—had plenty of her own troubles, despite her usually cold and proud expression.
Around 4 p.m., Yan Feifan received a call from Xiao Man.
She said on the phone that she had arranged a meeting with an entrepreneur for the next morning at the Phoenix Tail Mountain Golf Club in the southern suburbs.
Xiao Man hoped that Yan Feifan could also attend this meeting.
Yan Feifan was neither good at nor fond of this kind of social engagement.
But since Xiao Man was running around on behalf of his proposal, he felt he couldn’t refuse and had to agree.
At nearly 7 p.m., Yan Feifan got another call, this time from his sister.
Yan Ziruo said that she and Tian Yu were having so much fun they forgot to go home, and that they would be staying overnight at Yanyan’s place and returning tomorrow.
Yan Feifan reminded her about Tian Yu’s studies.
"Yanyan has a private tutor who comes to help her from Monday to Friday. She knows a lot, so tutoring Xiaoyu won’t be a problem."
"Besides, I’m a student from a top-tier university, you know. Teaching a middle schooler is a piece of cake..."
P.S.
I heard that a three-year-old child in a nearby neighborhood passed away last night from choking and couldn’t be revived.
Every year in our country, nearly 3,000 children die from accidental suffocation caused by foreign objects obstructing their windpipes.
It is recommended that all parents and adults with young children at home learn the Heimlich maneuver.
