[Ding! You have chosen the Spear Path]
[Mission: Create a Spear Technique of your own]
[Time limit: Two months]
[Rewards: 10 Divine Credits]
Staring at the message that appeared before him, Seraph raised a brow.
’A mission? I didn’t know you could do that.’
["Of course I can. It’s a system after all. However, I’m not the one responsible for giving you missions. I am only here to guide you."]
Halo explained.
Seraph made a faint ’oh’ sound and looked around. The training ground was empty with no one else around. The seniors who owned the place we’re probably having other classes or were on an expedition.
With no one to watch, Seraph began to train with the spear. His movements were fluid, as if every muscle in his body remembered the feeling. Still, there were visible flaws in his movements—sometimes a lag, sometimes overextending, or even a small misstep. However, it had to be considered that Seraph was still young so his body wasn’t fully developed. Also, he had achieved a breakthrough and reached the Core Beginner Stage. The fact that he could even perform this well was a proof of this.
’Two months? Well, I guess that’s more than enough time.’
_______
A month and half later, ’Year 1’ class went on their first expedition. It was the first time these group of kids had gone out of the clan borders. Even Seraph wasn’t an exception because his father was wary that other clans might attack them. If not, he’d have surely brought his son along on several business trips.
Guiding the excited kids was naturally Elder Cassius alongside a few guards. He was responsible for protecting them and ensuring nothing happened.
"Alright kiddos. This is your first time fighting against real beasts and not sparring against each other. The Spirit Beasts are also in the same cultivation pathway as we humans. Near our clan is a forest that houses weak Initial Beginner Stage Spirit Beasts.
Although all of you have broken into the Initial Beginner Stage, you’re still inexperienced."
He handed each one of them their preferred weapons tailored to their size, then continued.
"So you will go in groups of five. The final three should also group together. Don’t worry, you won’t get killed. I will ensure that."
His words made the children relieved until he smiled venomously and continued.
"However if I see that you’re slacking off, I’ll double your homework and training sessions for two weeks."
Thoughts about slacking off instantly vanished from their minds, reminded of how harsh his training sessions were. Initially, they weren’t supposed to train until they reached ’Year 2’. However, their generation was talented and they all became Initial Beginner Stage Cultivators under a month. Thus, as the school principal, Cassius sped up their schedule and began to train them in fighting skills. This made them scared of the double training. Of course, the fear of double math assignment was also there.
Very quickly, they gathered in groups of five. Seraph ended up in the group of three with Toma and Lana, a reclusive girl with only two-ci-aptitude.
Seeing that they were ready, Cassius led them into the forest near the clan while keeping an eye on them with the guards from the back. He repeatedly warned them not to stray too far lest they get eaten or lost.
To ensure their safety, he spread out his spirit sense while subtly paying attention to Seraph’s group. He wanted to see how that boy would perform.
_______
Seraph’s group of three moved at the left edge of the class, searching for spirit beasts.
"O-oh. This is our first time... right? I’m kind of... uh, scared."
Toma shuddered, casting wary glances at every shadow that moved in the forest.
"Don’t be afraid. Your big brother will take care of you." Seraph smiled widely, shamelessly patting his friend’s shoulders.
"Big brother? No way! We’re the same age!" Toma disagreed vehemently. However it was obvious his earlier nervousness had disappeared.
’You don’t need to thank me.’
Soon thereafter, the group encountered a spirit beast. It was a giant black spider with ugly green eyes. Finally! Something to test my spear technique on! Seraph thought, deeply elated. He couldn’t afford to use the technique he created against the other kids without injuring them or outright killing them.
Now however, he could fight this beast and see his own hardwork.
Gripping his spear, he whispered. "Seraphim Spear: First Form—Cyclone."
The spear spun in a deadly arcs like fan blades on a rotor, then slashed at the spider. Toma and Lana were taken aback by his decisiveness and prepared to help him.
Unexpectedly, as soon as the spinning spear touched the spider, it was shredded into pieces like a tomato in a blender.
The other two kids were stunned by the display of power. Even Seraph was quite surprised, wondering why the enemy had died so easily.
["That is to be expected. You’re a Core Beginner Stage Cultivator while it’s still a Rank One Beginner Stage Spirit beast. The difference is wide."]
He nodded, then turned to his teammates. They both had looks of surprise on their faces while their eyes shone with admiration.
"Wow! Seraph, you’re so cool!" Toma squealed, unbefitting of a male.
Even the reclusive Lana nodded.
"Hehe. Well, it’s nothing much." He scratched his head with an embarrassed smile, then clapped. "Still, let’s go. We can see more beasts."
Toma and Lana rushed after him, now emboldened by the fact that he could kill these beasts effortlessly.
Elder Cassius was also surprised by that display of power and skill, wondering where Seraph had learnt it. Still, he continued to monitor everyone while ensuring Seraph’s group was still within his range of surveillance.
The other groups were also doing good. Although they had to band up to kill a single beast and some even got injured, it was still impressive. One mustn’t forget the fact that they’re five year-old kids.
’As expected, their talents are good. This is why I insisted on teaching them personally.’
Usually, Elder Cassius only took the ’Year 5’ class lessons, but this time he wanted to ensure he personally groomed these generation of talents. Else, these first year kids should have never even dreamed of seeing him.
Meanwhile, Seraph’s group had just killed their fifth beast. Although Seraph knew he could handle the beasts alone, he allowed both Lana and Toma to join in. Whenever he saw them making mistakes, he’d correct them and ensure they changed. That aside, the system had finally recognized his technique.
[Ding! You have successfully created a Spear Technique—Seraphim Spear]
[You have completed the mission]
[You have been credited with 10 Divine Credits]
Before Seraph could finally ask Halo the uses of Divine Credits, the system continued.
[Ding! A new mission has arrived]
[Mission: Creature a Sword Technique of your own]
[Time limit: Two months]
[Rewards: 10 Divine Credits]
’Oh? Another one immediately?’
He paused, surprised. However, he decided to postpone all his questions for Halo until after the expedition.
"Hey, Seraph. Look, it’s a Horned Silver Wolf!"
Toma’s voice snapped him back to reality and he realized a large wolf was charging at them, its fangs bared threateningly. Seeing that it was just a Rank One Beginner Stage Spirit Beast, he let Toma and Lana handle it alone while he got ready to intervene in case necessary.
