Chapter 479: Chapter 479: Revealing the Truth—Serena, Can You Understand Me?

Julian Lawson looked at Serena Sterling in the rearview mirror.

She was wearing a wedding dress, truly beautiful.

Even now, bound and taped, cuffed in the back seat, she looked as beautiful as a stranded Mermaid.

The moment he walked into the dressing room and saw her smile and turn around, he imagined it was her walking toward him in a wedding dress.

But in the next second, he saw the smile disappear from her face.

He returned to the cold reality.

His fingers on the steering wheel were still bleeding; she had bitten him.

She was crying in the back seat.

Julian Lawson steeled his heart not to look at her, controlled the car around a corner, and finally stopped in front of a house.

Opening the back door, he lifted her out.

She struggled, but it was useless.

The long train of the wedding dress dragged on the floor, as he carried her up the stairs.

He carried Serena Sterling into a room, and after shutting the door, Julian Lawson tore off the tape from her mouth.

"Let me out!" Serena said loudly.

Julian Lawson just laughed.

"Let you out to marry him?"

He cupped her face in his hands: "Don’t even think about it!"

Her eyes brimmed with redness, and she opened her mouth to bite him.

He evaded easily, and she, with her hands bound, toppled over.

Julian Lawson looked at her struggling, sadly helping her sit steadily against the bedside.

Serena Sterling looked at the red-eyed Julian Lawson in front of her, fear welling up inside.

"What are you going to do?" She forced down her panic and asked.

"Don’t be afraid," Julian reassured, "I just want to tell you some things."

Serena didn’t speak, just looked at him with reddened eyes.

Seeing her calm down, Julian Lawson took a laptop from beside him and brought up some things for her to see.

"The beginning of it all was these photographs." Julian began, explaining how he had been half-forced to put on an act with Vera Hansen.

"At first, I thought that if she died, these photos would go with her to the grave."

"Later, I discovered that I had been deceived by Vera Hansen, it was all a setup by her and Preston Langley."

"She never had stomach cancer. She wanted to become Mrs. Lawson, to control me."

...

Julian Lawson told Serena all the words he had accumulated over these days.

"Now, I’m holding Vera Hansen in the basement, but Preston Langley has those photos. I can only use Vera to bait Preston."

"But you were going to marry him."

Julian said sadly: "Serena, I can’t watch you marry him."

On the laptop screen, Serena saw photo after photo.

All secretly taken by William Wyatt.

Even though she had been very careful in the past, living under the same roof inevitably left oversights.

Serena painfully closed her eyes.

Visions of William Wyatt’s expression each time he looked at her years ago resurfaced.

His abuse was just a guise; it was really his spying on her, coveting her...

She wanted to run, wanted to take her mom and run, but her mom misunderstood her.

Even today, Sheila Jenkins has not allowed her to call her mom.

However, she dared not tell Sheila Jenkins the whole truth.

More than Sheila’s misunderstanding, she feared for Sheila’s complete mental breakdown.

Back then, as Sheila Jenkins wandered the land with her, through hardships, standing on the edge of the river bridge together once.

Just a jump, and everything would end.

They stood there for a long time.

Finally, Sheila Jenkins took her off the bridge, and three days later, Sheila married William Wyatt.

How could she dare reveal the truth to Sheila Jenkins?

Fear crept in, as tears rolled down her cheeks.

A hand wiped away her tears.

Serena knew it was Julian Lawson, and she turned her head away to avoid his touch.

"Serena, even though these photos didn’t capture anything crucial, the exposure is high," Julian said, looking at the retreating Serena, "But people are gossipy; if these photos were to leak, what would they fabricate?"

"They would say, you and your mom shared a husband, even... even dirtier words."

"I don’t care about William Wyatt, don’t care about Vera Hansen, nor about Preston Langley’s fate, I only fear the rumors will ruin you."

"Serena, I can’t watch these things happen."

Julian Lawson spoke, watching Serena, leaning silently against the bedside, tears trickling from his eyes.

The room was unlit.

Even though it was still noon, it was quite dark inside.

Serena watched the leaves outside swaying in the wind, uncertain of her own thoughts.

She only knew she was very sad.

Sad, and there was nothing she could do.

"Serena, this is everything I wanted to tell you." Julian Lawson looked at Serena, speaking sadly, "This is the burden I’ve been unable to speak."

"I wanted to solve everything before telling you, but..." Julian’s heart ached more as he said, "Serena, I overestimated myself."

"Even today, though we’ve met twice, I still haven’t been able to catch Preston Langley."

But Serena still did not look at him, just gazed mournfully at the swaying shadows outside the window.

"Serena..."

Julian cupped Serena’s face, forcing her to look at him.

He asked: "You understand me, right?"

Serena’s gaze met Julian’s.

"Serena, answer me, give me an answer." Julian said.

The wind blew softly.

Serena looked at him: "Hmm, I understand you."

Julian’s expression instantly lit up with joy.

Tear stains still marked his face, but now he was smiling.

"Great!" Julian said, "Then let’s make up."

"Serena, I’ll treat you well, I’ll give you twice what Silas Hawthorne did."

"Love, wealth, anything, I’ll be with you, and we’ll have children in the future."

As if thinking of something, he added, "I don’t care about whatever happened between you and him, I just want you by my side."

Serena looked at the excited Julian Lawson in front of her, once the man she loved.

Many days and nights ago, she had wondered, did he have unspeakable troubles? What did he want to tell her?

Did he still love her?

If he had told her all this at the time, she would have told him she wanted to be with him.

They would have faced the difficulties together.

They would have spent the rest of their lives happily, in love, with him, with children, a happy family.

But now...

"Julian." Serena said, "I understand you, I... thank you for everything you’ve done for me."

"But..."

Serena watched as the smile slowly disappeared from Julian’s face.

But she had to continue.

"I’m sorry."

The shadows outside the window continued to sway; Serena looked at Julian Lawson’s face and said, "Julian Lawson, I don’t love you anymore."
