Chapter 216: Chapter 216- chaos

That night, after returning home, Cynthia called Quinn again.

This time, he answered. She immediately asked with concern,

"Quinn, I called you last night, but Mizuno said you were in an emergency meeting and couldn’t take the call. Is everything okay?"

There was a long silence on the other end before Quinn finally forced out a single word.

"No..."

His voice was hoarse. Cynthia frowned and scolded him lightly,

"What’s wrong with your voice? Did you catch a cold? There’s cold medicine in the bottom drawer of your bedside table. Take one and get some rest—"

"I’m tired. I’m hanging up."

Before she could finish her rambling instructions, Quinn suddenly cut her off with that blunt statement and then— click! —hung up the phone.

Cynthia was startled.

In all the time she had known him, he had never spoken to her so harshly.

She tried calling him back, but all she got was the cold, automated "phone is turned off" message.

She then called Mizuno, but no one answered.

With no other option, she finally dialed the landline at his house. A servant picked up and told her that Quinn had been exhausted these past few days and had already gone to bed.

Cynthia was puzzled.

No matter how tired Quinn was, he had never gone to bed this early. But since the servant insisted that everything at home was normal, with nothing unusual happening, she had no choice but to let it go.

Meanwhile, Quinn tossed his phone aside and buried himself back into his massive bed.

He had locked himself in his bedroom for an entire day.

And outside his door— Arven had been kneeling there for just as long.

When he woke up in the morning, his rationality finally returned.

In a sudden burst of fury, he grabbed his gun and aimed it straight at Arven’s head —his finger just a hair’s breadth away from pulling the trigger.

If it weren’t for the other subordinates rushing in to hold him back, Arven would have been dead on the spot.

Lying there, Quinn could still hear her soft scolding echoing in his ears. A bitter ache welled up in his chest as his thoughts drifted away.

Looking back now, aside from the time she had saved his life in that harrowing moment... and aside from the devastating explosion four years ago ...

These past four years with her had actually been peaceful, almost uneventful.

But perhaps it was exactly that quiet, ordinary life that made it all the more precious to him.

For a man like him— someone who lived in darkness, never knowing if he would even have a tomorrow —that kind of peaceful stability was the rarest and most unattainable treasure.

Their first year back in Australia had been rough.

Everything he once owned had either been destroyed or stolen by those bastards. Since his operations had always been based in Japan, he had no proper place for them to live in Australia.

She didn’t want to burden him, so she rented a small apartment on her own. He figured that, given his circumstances, keeping her by his side would only put her in more danger —so he let her be.

Back then, she was already pregnant with Olive.

One day, when he went to visit her, he found her in the bathroom, vomiting uncontrollably.

She had lost so much weight that she looked like a shadow of herself.

That was the last straw. Without giving her a choice, he forced her to move into his home.

But even then, his home was small, hidden, and barely livable. There was no way he could hire a housekeeper or a nanny.

And he himself was completely consumed with taking down Quinn.

The best he could do was wake up early to cook her a barely edible breakfast.

But even if his cooking was awful , at least it was better than letting her struggle alone—too weak to even lift a pan.

Keeping her by his side—he told himself it was just so he could see her every day.

That way, his heart would feel at ease.

That way, when he was out handling business, his mind wouldn’t wander into dangerous, irrational thoughts.

Once her morning sickness passed, she would waddle around with her growing belly every morning just to make him breakfast.

Even though her cooking was delicious , he couldn’t stand seeing her tire herself out, so he forbade her from doing it.

But she would pout stubbornly and insist on continuing.

So he had no choice—he had to end things quickly.

He threw himself into destroying that group of bastards , using every ounce of power he had.

And in the end, he won.

He stood at the pinnacle of wealth and power , finally giving her the stable, prosperous life she deserved.

But even after moving into a luxurious mansion with an army of servants and housekeepers , she still kept the same habits.

His meals were always prepared by her.

Every time he told her to take it easy , she would coax him with a playful whine , saying:

"I stay home all day with nothing to do. If I don’t even cook, I’ll die of boredom!"

There was nothing he could do—he could only let her be.

But he had to admit, she took care of his daily life perfectly.

His shirts were always ironed crisp and folded neatly in the closet.

Every morning, when he got up to get dressed, just seeing them there made his heart feel warm.

She even started learning how to cook Japanese dishes just for him.

At first, when he came home from work, she would proudly present her latest creation , waiting eagerly for him to try it.

To be honest, in the beginning, her cooking was almost inedible.

Especially her sashimi— the slices were uneven, and the presentation was a mess.

But he ate every bite happily , just to see her face light up with joy.

Later, her cooking gradually improved.

Or maybe... he had just gotten used to her flavors.

All he knew was that no matter how high-end the restaurant was, nothing tasted better than what she made.

He could see it—she was genuine.

She truly cared for him.

She truly wanted to be with him.

So when it came to physical intimacy , he never forced her, never pushed her.

He was patient.

He believed that one day, she would be completely his.

But fate had other plans.

Because in the end— she still went back to that man.

He would never forget the day that man was injured.

She had gone deathly pale, her entire body trembling uncontrollably.

He held her in his arms for what felt like forever, gently soothing her.

And yet, she kept whispering—over and over, like a broken record:

"Quinn, I have to go back and save him... I have to go back and save him..."

What else could he do?

Other than letting her go ?

It wasn’t about saving a life.

After spending years in the darkness , he had long grown numb to life and death.

He just... couldn’t bear to see her in so much pain.

But this time, her departure was final.

Last time, he knew she would eventually return.

But this time... she never would.

It didn’t matter if he tried to forcefully take her back with brute strength or if he tried to move her with tenderness and devotion —she would never come back.

Because her heart... was never his to begin with.

That man—just one gentle gesture, one soft-spoken word from him, and everything he had held onto for four years would come crashing down.

More than that, they had always loved each other deeply.

The wounds of the past had been nothing but a misunderstanding.

And now, she had gone back to where she truly belonged.

After she left, his world turned to darkness.

Every night, he would drown himself in memories of her warmth , unable to sleep.

He missed her so much that even during business transactions , he became careless.

Last night, he had been so lost in his own thoughts that he didn’t even notice when the other party had spiked his drink.

And then... the events of last night had unfolded in utter chaos.

The more he thought about it, the more his head throbbed with unbearable pain.

Irritated, he got up and swung the door open.

Outside, Arven was still there—kneeling, back straight, unmoving.

He knew his men had only done it for his own good.

So, with a small wave of his hand, he simply said:

"Get up."

Arven let out a quiet sigh of relief, slowly steadying himself against the wall as he rose.

After that, no one mentioned what had happened the night before again.
