Please Let Me Go, My Contracted Ex-Husband.-Chapter 230- Did you cry?
Four years ago, the mainland drug lord Robin was forced into ruin by Albert. With his family shattered, he fled overseas, only to die suddenly during his escape. Following Diago’s orders, James was sent to the mainland to assist in handling matters related to the Laurence family. It was said that when Diago had faced a sudden family crisis years ago, Robin had once lent him a helping hand.
Thanks to Robin’s assistance, Diago was able to return to Hong Kong in time to take control of the situation. Had he been even a step late, the Boston family’s empire might have fallen into someone else’s hands. For this, Diago had always harbored gratitude toward Robin.
However, as the Boston family was involved in legitimate businesses while Robin was a notorious drug lord, Diago severed all ties with him after taking over. He only sent a single message through intermediaries:
If the Laurence family ever faces trouble, the Boston family will offer unconditional support.
Before Robin fled, the Boston family had already injected a substantial amount of funds into the Laurence family’s businesses, hoping to help them through their crisis. However, no one had anticipated Albert’s overwhelming strength and his unwavering determination to destroy the Laurence family.
As a result, the Laurence family didn’t last long before Albert crushed them once again. Left with no choice, Robin took Carl Laurence and fled. Not long after, news of Robin’s sudden death spread.
Upon hearing of Robin’s demise, Diago instructed James to travel to the mainland and handle his funeral arrangements. Carl Laurence was still on the run, barely able to protect himself, while the Laurence family’s remaining members—two grieving women—were likely in no state to take care of such matters. Since Robin had once saved the Boston family, it was only right to ensure he was laid to rest properly.
Carrying Diago’s instructions, he arrived in that city, only to find the Laurence family in complete chaos. Robin’s sudden death had left behind a mess that no one was willing to clean up—creditors and enemies were showing up at their door daily, demanding money or revenge.
When he met with the Laurence mother and daughter to explain his purpose, he quickly grew disgusted by their opportunistic nature. The worst of them was Miya, who practically threw herself at him every chance she got, clinging to him like a lovesick fool.
Determined to wrap things up as quickly as possible and leave, he remained at the back of the funeral hall on the day of Robin’s burial, silently waiting for the ceremony to end. Suddenly, a commotion broke out at the front.
Stepping outside, he saw Miya and her mother grappling with a young woman dressed in black, hurling insults at her.
"What are you doing here? Get out!"
The girl was crying, pleading with them. 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
"Stepmother, please, just let me go in and pay my respects to my father. I’ll leave right after!"
*Her father is Robin?* He frowned slightly. Diago had only ever mentioned that Robin had a son and a daughter—there had never been any talk of another daughter. His curiosity piqued, he took a closer look at the girl.
She was dressed in a black suit, a mourning band wrapped around her arm. Her pale face was devoid of makeup, streaked with tears. She wasn’t as striking as Miya, but there was something serene and pleasant about her, like an elegant ink painting of distant mountains.
She clung to Laurence’s mother’s arm, begging desperately, but the woman shoved her to the ground with ruthless disdain.
"A bastard child has no right to step into the Laurence family’s memorial hall!"
Still unwilling to give up, the girl scrambled to her feet and continued pleading.
"Stepmother, I beg you, let me send my father off one last time—"
Slap!
Before she could finish speaking, Laurence’s mother slapped her hard across the face with a crisp sound. As she shoved her aside, she screamed with all her might:
"Your father? When he was alive, I didn’t dare to do anything to you. Now that he’s gone, and Carl is gone, you, Bonnie, are just a lowly illegitimate child in my eyes! You’ll never step into the Laurence family’s doors!"
She seemed stunned by the slap, standing there with her hand on her face, not saying a word. Just when they thought she would give up, she suddenly stopped crying, wiped her tears away, and stubbornly stepped forward, continuing toward the mourning hall.
Laurence Duoduo, seeing her do this, angrily raised her hand and slapped her too, cursing with even more venom:
"Bonnie, how can you be so shameless!"
The slap made her stagger, but her gaze became even more determined. With tears in her eyes, she refused to let them fall, and stubbornly walked to Robin’s memorial before kneeling heavily.
Laurence’s mother and Duoduo seemed to be taken aback by her attitude, standing still, no longer making any move. She knelt there, reverently bowing her head, and as her head lowered, he saw that the mat she was kneeling on had become wet.
He was standing not far behind her, in the memorial hall. Her stubborn face, draped in black, moved him so much that for a moment, it felt as if his heart had been pierced by something sharp, and a wave of pain spread throughout his body.
Did he really feel sorry for this girl he had never met before? It wasn’t a pain born from pity for her situation, but a genuine ache in his heart for this girl, even an impulse to hold her in his arms and protect her.
He was born into the prestigious Boston family, surrounded by countless talented young women, yet he had never felt such heart-wrenching pain, as if his heart had been torn apart in that instant.
Lost in thought, he saw her finish her bow, wipe her tears, and turn to walk out. But Laurence’s mother suddenly shouted at her back:
"Since you’ve bowed before your father’s memorial, you need to repay your father’s debt!"
He saw her slender figure tremble violently for a moment before she stopped in her tracks. She glanced back slightly, and all he could see was her stubborn profile. Then he heard her calmly speak to Laurence’s mother:
"Don’t worry, I’ll find a way to raise the money."
Laurence’s mother smiled in a very sinister way:
"I’ll give you three days. If you can’t come up with one million within three days, then get ready to accompany Mr. Liu!"
Her figure trembled even more violently, and then she covered her mouth and turned to run out. He couldn’t help but follow her.
When Laurence’s mother saw him coming out, she quickly stepped forward to block him with a forced smile:
"Oh, Mr. Boston, where are you going?"
"Get out of my way!"
He looked at Laurence’s mother with disgust, roughly pushing her aside before running after her.
When he reached the corner, he didn’t see her anywhere. Just as he thought he had lost track of her, he tilted his head and noticed a dark figure sitting on a small path nearby. Her head was buried in her knees, and the way she curled up there made his heart twist again.
He thought to himself that he must be going crazy. He was no longer in his twenties, long past the age of being moved by love. His image in Hong Kong was always defined by maturity, steadiness, and the resilience and wisdom of a true man.
But today, for this girl, he had lost his composure time and time again, even chasing after her from the memorial hall?
However, he was always the calmest James. After the initial impulse, he quickly regained his composure. Since he had already come this far, he wasn’t going to back down. So, he stood in front of her, reached into his pocket, and asked:
"Did you cry?"
She suddenly looked up, and her gaze toward him was filled with hostility. He saw that her eyes were dry, with no tears left, only a deep sense of stubbornness.
For a moment, he felt a bit awkward. Seeing her sitting there, hugging herself, he thought she was hiding and crying after being humiliated by Laurence’s mother and daughter in the memorial hall.
She ignored him, stood up from the ground, and was about to leave. Just as he was about to reach out and stop her, he saw her stagger a few times before collapsing to the side. He quickly stepped forward and caught her, only to find that she had fainted in his arms, her face pale.
