Please Let Me Go, My Contracted Ex-Husband.-Chapter 248- Can’t take the medicine?
As soon as Bonnie returned to the meeting room, she was met with all kinds of scrutinizing glances—some were snickering in amusement, others full of resentment, some were calm, and some were envious.
Behind her, James walked in expressionlessly and sat in the main seat. Bonnie cleared her throat and began to lead the meeting. Several times, she felt unwell, but she stubbornly held it together, not allowing him to see any weakness.
As soon as the meeting ended, James stood up without looking back and walked out. Throughout the entire time, he didn’t even spare her a glance. Bonnie stayed seated, sorting through the materials, when Anna sauntered over, intentionally speaking loudly.
Bonnie, who’s that handsome guy who dropped you off at work this morning? I heard... you two are living together now?
That’s so sweet—he drops you off in the morning and picks you up at night. I’m so jealous!
She said, glancing at James, who had already reached the door. As expected, his figure stiffened for a moment before he walked out.
Bonnie of course knew what Anna was trying to do, but she couldn’t be bothered. She remained silent, continuing to sort through her materials. The past few days, her reactions had been so intense that she couldn’t even drive to work herself. Carl had volunteered to drop her off in the morning, and at night, he didn’t want her to take the bus, so he picked her up.
She hadn’t wanted to make things so obvious and invite misunderstandings, so she had always gotten out at the corner before the TV station. But today, by coincidence, Anna spotted her. Anna, driving her flashy sports car, kept throwing Carl flirtatious glances. This kind of woman really could flirt anywhere.
Cynthia, who couldn’t stand Anna’s provocative attitude, walked over and affectionately placed her arm around Bonnie’s shoulder.
Bonnie, I heard that Carl is back. Are you two living together?
She deliberately emphasized the "Laurence," and Anna, not knowing that Carl and Bonnie weren’t actually siblings, immediately thought that the handsome guy who had dropped Bonnie off was her brother. She instantly realized she’d made a mistake and awkwardly turned to leave.
Bonnie shook her head helplessly at Cynthia while gathering her things.
Darling, why are you so impatient? The truth will always come out. The more you interact with someone like her, the more she’ll stir things up!
Cynthia pouted and looked quite tough.
Hmph! If she keeps acting like this, I’ll go to Diago and get him to fire her!
Seeing her like this, Bonnie felt a warm sensation in her heart. Perhaps true friends were like this—when you were exhausted and didn’t have the energy to deal with everything, they would be the first to step in front of you, blocking all the winds and storms for you.
Just like Cynthia was now, even though she wasn’t usually someone who liked stirring up trouble, she had stood up against Anna for Bonnie several times. Bonnie felt fortunate to have such a sincere and loyal friend in this lifetime.
As soon as Bonnie sat down back in her office, the intercom rang. She picked up the phone, and his deep voice came through. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖
Bonnie, come to my office.
After giving the command, he was about to hang up. She quickly called out, politely refusing.
Sorry, Mr. Boston, I’m a bit busy right now—
You have two minutes. Don’t make me come to your office to find you. Don’t you think you already have enough gossip about you?
He threw that remark at her and hung up without any courtesy.
Although he didn’t explicitly mention what those rumors were, Bonnie knew he was referring to what Anna had just said about her living with a handsome guy. After being together for so many years, she could still understand a little bit of what he was thinking.
She steeled herself and went to his office. As always, she stood at the door and didn’t step any further. He was busy with a pile of documents, his shirt sleeves casually rolled up, looking effortless and natural.
Take the medicine on the desk, he commanded without raising his head.
She was startled for a moment, then turned her gaze toward the coffee table, where a clean glass of warm water sat with a pill beside it in a small box.
Her nose suddenly felt tight, and she recognized that it was the medicine he used to prepare for her when her stomach hurt. But how could she take the medicine now? She quickly blinked away the tears that threatened to fall and calmly said, Thank you for your concern, Mr. Boston, but my stomach is fine now. I don’t need the medicine anymore.
As soon as she finished speaking, he abruptly looked up from his paperwork. His dark, cold eyes fixed on her, filled with deep hurt, which soon turned into anger. In his eyes, her refusal felt like cold rejection.
He threw the pen down onto the desk and stood up, striding towards her. The air around them suddenly felt thin, and in that moment, she truly had the impulse to turn and flee.
His tall figure stopped in front of her. She lowered her head, feeling guilty, and heard his mocking voice in her ear.
What? Do you have someone new now? Are you rejecting the slightest bit of concern from your old lover?
His words made her heart ache. She stood there, head lowered, her voice tinged with helplessness.
That’s not what I mean at all. I really can’t take the medicine...
They were already divorced, and he had grown tired of her. Why was he still concerned about her life and death? Why act like he cared so deeply for her? What did he take Bonnie for? Just because he wanted to care, did she have to fall into his arms for that little bit of attention?
Can’t take the medicine?
He reached out with his long, slender finger and lifted her chin, his dark eyes piercing deep into her soul, filled with intense scrutiny.
Every time he gazed at her like that, she felt a sense of panic, as though he could see through her. This time was no different. Her heart raced in fear, and she swiftly slapped his hand away.
Anyway, I’m fine now. I don’t need the medicine. Thank you!
She quickly said everything she wanted to say and turned to open the door, rushing out. James, sharp-eyed, noticed that she was wearing flat shoes today. His eyes narrowed, a glint of sharpness flashing across them. He thought for a moment and realized that she had been wearing high heels yesterday.
Based on his understanding of her, it was impossible for her to wear flat shoes during work hours. Although she hated high heels and formal suits, she still made an effort to dress like a director for work because of the nature of her job.
She might come off as careless and clumsy in her daily life, but when it came to work, she was extremely serious and determined. She was stubborn about not allowing anyone to find fault with her, whether in her appearance or her behavior.
However, once she stepped out of the office, she transformed. She would often zone out for long periods or laugh carelessly, especially when at home. There, she shed all pretenses, wearing loose, oversized clothes and slippers, walking around the house without a care.
But he really liked this easygoing, relaxed version of her. That was the real her, not the one who always hid behind a tough shell, a shell that made his heart ache.
