Please Let Me Go, My Contracted Ex-Husband.-Chapter 249- bloodline
Sometimes, when he saw her so exhausted at work, he would ask in confusion,
"It’s just a job, why do you have to push yourself so hard?"
She would immediately become serious and respond with utmost gravity,
"When it comes to work, you have to be meticulous and careful. It’s my livelihood!"
He would laugh, pulling her into an embrace and kissing her,
"If you lose your livelihood, so be it. I can take care of you!"
Whenever he said that, a shadow of sadness would flicker in her eyes, and she would shove him away, pouting and muttering,
"I don’t want to stay at home all day like a secluded housewife and not even realize when someone steals my husband!"
He had always thought her sadness was because she minded being kept at home, but now, upon reflection, it seemed that sadness was actually a kind of insecurity and fear!
Suddenly, he realized he had caught a glimpse of something, something like her hidden thoughts. But that clue vanished in an instant, and he punched the door in frustration. Turning around, he went back to his desk and picked up the phone, ordering,
"Cancel the trip for tomorrow. I’ll stay here for a while."
Bonnie was on edge the entire way back to her office, worried that the sly fox might have noticed something. When she arrived, she was relieved to find Cynthia already sitting there, smiling at her. The sight of her smile made Bonnie feel uncomfortable.
She quickly turned to pour herself a cup of water, trying to calm down, then jokingly asked,
"Vice Director, to what do I owe the pleasure?"
Cynthia didn’t take the bait, instead sitting calmly on the couch, her chin resting on one hand as she casually remarked,
"No more drinking, no more high heels, constant nausea..."
As Cynthia continued, Bonnie’s smile faded, and she began to feel uneasy. Cynthia, unfazed, slowly added,
"Bonnie, these symptoms... they sound a lot like what a pregnant person would experience."
"You—what are you talking about? Who’s pregnant?"
Bonnie shot her a sharp look and walked toward her desk, trying to escape Cynthia’s penetrating gaze.
"Should I check your pulse for you?"
Cynthia grinned behind her, watching Bonnie’s nervous reaction. From the way Bonnie was acting, Cynthia was almost certain—Bonnie was really pregnant!
It seemed that fate had played its hand for these two awkward souls. With a baby on the way, if her brother found out, he would probably drag Bonnie back and never let go again. She could already picture him tying her down and vowing never to let her slip away again.
Cynthia swore that once the baby was born, she would spoil it rotten. After all, it would be the child of these two, their saving grace!
Bonnie rolled her eyes at her, sitting silently in her chair, her silence almost confirming Cynthia’s guess. Cynthia couldn’t hold back any longer and dashed to Bonnie’s desk, leaning over it eagerly.
"So, you’re really pregnant? How many months along are you?"
"Two!"
She snorted coldly, then seemed to remember something and turned to Cynthia, saying fiercely,
"Cynthia, I warn you, you must not tell him, or I’ll cut ties with you!"
Cynthia looked troubled.
"No way..."
That was too harsh! Threatening her with a severance of their friendship!
Bonnie spoke with unusual determination,
"I don’t want him to do anything for the sake of the child. If he wants the child, I’ll give it to him after it’s born, but we can never be together just because of this child!"
Cynthia shook her head helplessly. Bonnie sounded so calm, but she probably couldn’t understand the bond a mother would feel for her child while she was still pregnant. Once the child was born, even if it cost her life, she would never want to part with it.
However, she couldn’t just sit back and let the two of them remain in this deadlock. So she reluctantly said,
"Bonnie, I’m in a tough spot too. One’s my brother, the other’s my friend. Why do I always have to go through these difficult choices in life? But... if you don’t want me to tell him, I guess I can keep quiet..."
"You want something?"
Bonnie looked at her warily, and Cynthia smiled innocently.
"How about you ask him to lunch today? Then I won’t tell him."
Both of them were so awkward. Her brother was probably too scared by her to take another step forward, but if Bonnie took the initiative to ask him out, he’d probably be over the moon and might just start running after her again.
Bonnie was so furious that she almost choked on her words.
"Cynthia, are you out of your mind? You want me to ask him to lunch? Are you even still my best friend?"
Ask him to lunch? She might as well just die!
Cynthia sighed with a look of apology on her face,
"Sorry, Bonnie, but after all, this is the Boston family’s bloodline!"
After speaking, Cynthia turned and walked away. She knew her actions were a bit melodramatic, but it seemed like there was no other choice. Pushed into this corner, Bonnie would definitely choose to invite him to lunch. Now, she could only hope her brother would quickly notice something was off and hurry to get her back.
"Hey, hey, wait! I’ll ask!"
Bonnie shouted after her, gritting her teeth.
She thought it over for a moment. A meal was nothing—he’d be leaving for Hong Kong tomorrow anyway. It was better than Cynthia telling him right now. If that happened, she’d never be able to face him again
Cynthia chuckled, turned around, and leaned against the doorframe, crossing her arms. She nodded at Bonnie, signaling her to hurry up and make the call. Bonnie, her chest heaving with frustration, shot her a glare and reluctantly picked up the phone. Without waiting for him to answer, she started speaking first.
"Hello, Mr. Boston. To thank you for your concern this morning, would you join me for lunch today?"
