Please Let Me Go, My Contracted Ex-Husband.-Chapter 258- had a child out of wedlock
Cynthia gently comforted her.
"Bonnie, calm down. You’re pregnant now, and you shouldn’t let your emotions get too agitated. Think about this carefully when you go home. If you truly can’t accept my brother, I’ll take care of him for you. But if you feel even the slightest bit of affection for him, then please—give him another chance, okay?"
Cynthia understood. With everything happening so suddenly, Bonnie was bound to feel overwhelmed and lost, just like when Albert had chased her all the way to Australia. At that time, she had also panicked, and the only way she could deal with it was by shutting him out, rejecting him coldly, and hurting him—because she had no other way to calm the turmoil in her heart.
Bonnie leaned her head back against the chair, let out a long breath, and nodded.
That evening, as she was leaving work, it suddenly started to rain. She had stayed late, still stuck on the social security issue for low-income groups that had been at a standstill.
The colleague in charge of the report had updated her earlier today. According to their investigation, the government had allocated funds for the social security program, yet for some unknown reason, the low-income citizens hadn’t received a single cent.
It didn’t take much thought to guess where the money had gone—it had likely ended up in the pockets of corrupt officials.
She watched the footage of her colleagues interviewing the low-income residents. Each person looked disheveled, struggling at the very bottom of society. Several times, she felt her eyes sting with tears.
In front of the camera, those people pleaded for the truth to be exposed, for justice to be served. They had no power, no influence, yet they still took the risk of speaking out, knowing they could face retaliation.
Because up until now, they had been ordered to lie—to tell the public that they had already received their social security benefits.
As a journalist, her duty was to let the facts speak for themselves. She swore she would expose the corrupt officials behind all of this. Of all the money they could have stolen, they chose to steal from low-income people? Did they have no conscience at all?
However, their investigation faced unprecedented obstacles. Several colleagues working on the case had been attacked, warned, and threatened. Some, unable to withstand the pressure, had already withdrawn from the investigation. She, too, was unsure of how to move forward.
The rain poured heavily. She hadn’t brought an umbrella. She had always been careless about such things—back when she was with him, he would always remind her to take one before she rushed out the door.
And if she forgot, he always had a spare umbrella ready for her at the office. His assistant would send it over at the end of the day. Sometimes, he would even deliberately assign her extra work to keep her late, waiting until the entire station was empty before finally holding her in his arms as they left together.
She frowned, watching the downpour outside. Standing at the entrance of the TV station, she didn’t know what to do. In the past, she would have dashed into the rain and hailed a taxi, but her situation was different now—she couldn’t risk it.
Cynthia had left early to pick up Olive from kindergarten. She called Carl, hoping he could come to pick her up, but his phone was unreachable. With no other choice, she stood there, anxiously waiting.
The rain showed no sign of stopping. After a long time, she sighed, lifted her handbag over her head, and prepared to make a run for it.
Just then, a hand grabbed her arm. A warm coat was draped over her shoulders, shielding her from the cold. And above her, with a soft *click*, a brown plaid umbrella opened, casting its shelter over her head.
She turned around in confusion and met his gaze—warm and steady as always, with a hint of amusement in his eyes.
"I’ll take you home," he said.
She pursed her lips but didn’t refuse. Although she didn’t want to get entangled with him again, given the weather, she had no choice but to compromise. She had to consider the baby in her belly.
He naturally reached out, pulling her close as he held the umbrella over them, leading her toward the parking lot.
Just then, a pitiful voice called out behind them.
"James—"
Hearing that, Bonnie’s skin crawled. She squirmed uncomfortably in his arms, trying to break free. His childhood sweetheart was here—shouldn’t he be rushing over to her?
James impatiently turned his head and glanced at Anna, who stood there shivering. She looked at him pitifully and said,
"James, I didn’t bring an umbrella either..."
Her voice was so sickeningly sweet that Bonnie nearly gagged. She immediately reached up to shove his arm off her shoulders, angrily pushing it away.
But instead of letting go, he only held her tighter. Furious, she pinched him hard.
She heard him inhale sharply in pain, but he still didn’t release her. Instead, he turned to Anna and said coldly,
"Do you really want to fight a pregnant woman for this?"
"What?"
Anna was stunned. Her eyes widened in disbelief as she stared at Bonnie.
James shot her a glance, then turned and walked away with Bonnie in his arms.
Bonnie struggled angrily as they walked.
"Why did you tell Anna I’m pregnant?!"
She never expected him to reveal her pregnancy. She felt like she had fallen into another one of his traps. If Anna spread the news, where would she put her face?
After all, in the eyes of the public, she had always maintained a single woman’s image. There had been rumors about her and James, but no one knew they were actually married! If word got out that she was pregnant, wouldn’t people assume she had a child out of wedlock? 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Oh god! She couldn’t even begin to imagine the consequences if this continued. There were some rumors she could handle, but this? This kind of gossip was something she absolutely couldn’t bear—especially since it involved the baby in her belly.
This man was truly terrifying!
But James, on the other hand, spoke as if he were completely innocent.
"Sooner or later, people will find out. Or do you plan to keep hiding it when your belly gets bigger?"
James immediately saw through her panic. In fact, he had to thank Anna for interrupting just now. Given her personality, she was bound to spread nasty rumors about Bonnie.
At that point, he could step in and announce that the child was his—playing the hero rescuing the damsel in distress.
Better yet, if Anna made a big scene and the news reached Diago in Malaysia, he’d be even happier.
Maybe Anna would even cause a scene all the way to Diago in Malaysia—something he would gladly welcome.
Diago and the rest of the family had been longing for a grandchild for ages. If they found out she was pregnant, they would probably disregard their health concerns and fly over immediately to persuade her to reconcile with him.
