Please Let Me Go, My Contracted Ex-Husband.-Chapter 259-Won’t you invite me up?
"Don’t blame him for using tactics on her, because when dealing with such a stubborn and headstrong woman, without using any tricks, it’s simply impossible to handle. He’s actually quite innocent, isn’t he?"
"Then I’ll resign!"
She puffed out her cheeks and said angrily, while he gritted his teeth in frustration.
"Don’t you dare! If you try, I’ll hunt you down no matter where you go, even if it’s to the ends of the earth!"
After saying that, he snorted coldly, opened the car door, and tossed her inside. Then, he closed the umbrella and got in from the other side of the car.
As he got in, Bonnie was about to continue arguing with him about what had just happened when her phone rang. She answered it, and immediately fell silent. It was a colleague in charge of the security deposit, who regretfully informed her that he would have to withdraw from the project because when he returned home that night, he found his door had been splattered with fresh blood
She couldn’t say anything and simply said "I understand," before hanging up the phone. The car continued to drive smoothly and quietly through the pouring rain, and she closed her eyes, leaning back against the seat, her face full of exhaustion.
It wasn’t that she didn’t know that this was the harsh reality of society. Having been in the news industry for so many years, facing such cruel facts still often felt overwhelming.
A dry, warm hand reached over and gently took her hand, which she had clenched tightly out of distress. His deep voice echoed in the quiet car:
"Stick to what you believe in and do what you think is right. I’ll always support you!"
For the past few days, he had known exactly what she was troubled about. But this was the nature of the industry. He wanted to keep her under his wings to shield her from the storms, but he also knew her personality wouldn’t allow her to stay at home and live the life of an ordinary housewife.
As for the matter with the security deposit, the higher-ups in the bureau had already spoken to him about it, but he had fiercely rejected them. If she wanted to broadcast, then she would. Maybe all he could do now was to minimize the harm this society would do to her, and let her follow her heart in everything she did.
His words caused a warm current to surge in Bonnie’s heart, melting the coldness that had settled there due to the harsh realities. She slowly turned her head, looking at his defined profile, and asked seriously,
"But... is what I’m insisting on really worth insisting? Is everything I think is right really right?"
He parked the car by the side of the road, then turned to look at her, his eyes full of determination and encouragement.
"Where there is sunlight, there will be shadows. This is an unchanging truth. Since you can’t change it, try to accept it. If you can’t accept it, then follow your heart. People act, but heaven watches. As long as you’re true to yourself, that’s all that matters."
Outside, the rain was pouring heavily, but inside the car was filled with a quiet, warm atmosphere. Bonnie looked at his tender expression and couldn’t help but think back to when the TV station was just starting out. Every day, she faced all sorts of challenges, and there were many times when she wanted to give up.
But even though he wasn’t by her side, it was as though he knew everything. He would always call her when she faced difficulties or even fly over to be with her.
Back then, she didn’t think much of it. She thought it was just a coincidence. But now, looking back carefully, it seemed like each time, he had been... acting intentionally.
Tears suddenly welled up in her eyes, and the exhaustion from all these days weighed her down. She began to cry uncontrollably.
"Bonnie, don’t cry, I’m here!"
James hurriedly grabbed some tissues to hand to her. To be honest, he had rarely seen her cry—almost never, in fact.
Bonnie didn’t know what was happening to her. She was never the type to cry easily, but today she just couldn’t control herself. The more she tried to stop, the more she felt wronged, and so the tears flowed even more heavily.
James sat there, frowning, watching her with a face full of heartache. But he knew that at this moment, aside from quietly being by her side, saying anything or doing anything would only feel hollow.
He didn’t know how long it had been before she stopped crying, awkwardly wiping away her tears and glancing at him with some embarrassment.
"Drive... please."
She had never shown such a fragile side in front of him, so she felt quite embarrassed. He, however, didn’t seem to mind. Without any other emotions, he started the car and continued driving. The two didn’t speak anymore during the drive. He turned on the car’s stereo, playing soft, gentle music. Slowly, her mood began to calm along with the soothing melodies.
The car stopped under her apartment building. She thanked him and was about to get out when he grabbed her arm, a slight annoyance on his face.
"Won’t you invite me up?"
She turned back and gave him a hesitant look.
"Uh..."
She didn’t mind inviting him up, but Carl was still at her place. Didn’t he care that it might be awkward if the two of them met?
He seemed to immediately see through what she was thinking, and a mischievous glint flashed in his eyes.
"Isn’t Carl staying at your place? Isn’t he your brother? What’s there for me to be concerned about?"
He deliberately emphasized the words "your brother," which made Bonnie furious. She thought to herself, If you know he’s my brother, then why did you force me to make that choice in the first place?
James didn’t provoke her any further. Instead, he turned and grabbed the umbrella from the back of the car, got out, and opened the door on her side. She puffed her cheeks, sitting there, still wearing his coat. After giving him a glare, she reluctantly got out and joined him under the umbrella.
He naturally wrapped his arm around her and walked with her towards the building. His tall frame completely shielded her, not only with his body but also with the umbrella, which covered her completely. The rain was coming down so heavily that by the time they reached the building, half of his body was drenched.
Bonnie knew Carl didn’t like James, so she felt a little nervous as she unlocked the door. James, on the other hand, leaned casually against the doorframe, smiling as he watched her shaky hands.
To her surprise, the apartment was empty. Usually, by this time, Carl would have been home, preparing dinner for her. She called out in confusion,
"Bro? Are you home?"
She was so focused on looking for Carl that she didn’t notice James behind her, changing his shoes, then casually taking off his soaked shirt and hanging it up. Without a care, he walked into the living room.
