Chapter 64 -64: Justice Over Family
Qiao En didn’t want those things, and Cheng Lu didn’t bring them back either.
After leaving the police station, he replied to Zhou Jin’an.
Zhou Jin’an was still in the hospital while Mrs. Zhou remained in a coma.
The doctor said the flowerpot had damaged her nerves and that Mrs. Zhou was likely to become vegetative.
“Secretary Qiao might still be angry with you. She was very adamant and refused to take anything,” he said.
Zhou Jin’an’s eyes darkened, and he rubbed the center of his forehead with his hand.
Qiao En was usually gentle, but when she was stubborn, she was more difficult to deal with than a mule.

He had handed her over to the police in front of everyone. It was normal for her to be angry with him, but he did it to protect her.
“You may go back,” he said.
Zhou Jin’an had spoken.
Cheng Lu asked one more question, “Director Zhou, when will Secretary Qiao be released? It’s not right to keep her detained indefinitely!”
Zhou Jin’an took a deep breath and said, “We’ll talk about it later.”
He ended the call on his own initiative.
The most dangerous place is often the safest.
That was a principle he firmly believed in.
He had personally sent Qiao En to the police station.
It was because he feared someone might harm her again.
However, Qiao En was unaware of his intentions.
On the seventh day, Qiao En finally gained her freedom.
Just like when she was brought in, the same two police officers took her out.
“Miss Qiao, you’re clear of charges,” said one of the officers.
She was clear? Clear of what?
Qiao En didn’t ask. When she exited, she only wanted to rush to the hospital.
At that moment, Cheng Lu appeared in front of Qiao En.
He drove Zhou Jin’an’s Maybach and opened the car door for Qiao En.
“Where to? I can give you a ride,” he offered.
He pretended to just pass by, but in fact, he had come specifically to pick her up.
“No need,” Qiao En refused and started walking away, not caring whether it was the right direction.
“You’re going the wrong way,” Cheng Lu reminded her.
Qiao En was being stubborn. Even though she knew the direction was wrong, she persisted in her choice.
She walked ahead, and Cheng Lu followed at a leisurely pace by her side.
“That little girl has been found. Do you want to see her?” he baited.
Qiao En paused for a brief moment.
She could reject all the kindness from Zhou Jin’an, but she couldn’t deny her desire to uncover the truth.
“Where is she?” Qiao En stopped in her tracks.
Cheng Lu opened the car door, “Get in, it’s a bit of a drive. I’ll take you there.”
This time, Qiao En didn’t refuse. She opened the passenger door and sat down.
The familiar scent of Zhou Jin’an once again enveloped her, and Qiao En felt an oppressive tightness in her chest.
She instinctively rolled down the window, letting the wind rush in from all directions.
After roughly half an hour, Cheng Lu parked the car in front of a welfare institute.
“Is she here?” Qiao En asked.
She had never been to such a place in her life.
If it weren’t for Cheng Lu bringing her today, she wouldn’t even know that such a place existed in Rong City.
“Yes, she’s an orphan,” responded Cheng Lu indifferently.
After registering at the entrance, they went through the main gate.
There weren’t many children at the welfare institute, and their ages varied widely.
Fortunately, despite their difficult circumstances and less than ideal conditions, they still played happily.
Qiao En waited outside while Cheng Lu went to find the director.
Soon, Qiao En met the little girl in an empty classroom.
She looked to be no more than ten years old, short but very thin.
Upon seeing Qiao En, the girl recognized her immediately and hastily hid behind the director.
The director was an elderly lady with silvery-white hair, plump and benevolent-looking when she smiled.
“Huahua, don’t hide. The auntie and uncle have come to see you,” the director tried to pull Huahua forward, but she was reluctant.
“Director, may I talk to her for a moment?” Qiao En crouched down and took out a lollipop from her bag.
“We know each other, don’t we? Here’s a candy for you.”
Qiao En handed the candy to Huahua, her timid eyes peeking out from behind the head of the orphanage, fixated on the candy.
“Huahua, don’t you love lollipops the most? Auntie is giving one to you, so take it.”
The head of the orphanage patiently encouraged her.
No child could resist the temptation of candy, and Huahua was no exception.
She snatched the candy from Qiao En’s hand before she could even tear off the wrapper and stuffed it into her mouth.
“Eat slowly, no one is competing with you.”
The head of the orphanage stopped her and personally helped her remove the wrapper.
With the lollipop in her hand, a smile finally appeared on Huahua’s face.
“Is it tasty?”
Qiao En asked again.
Huahua nodded.
Qiao En opened the small package, revealing many more colorful candies inside.
Upon seeing this, Huahua’s eyes went wide.
“Auntie has a few questions to ask you. If you tell me the truth, I will give you all these candies.”
This was an exchange.
Huahua hesitated for a moment, wrestling with her conscience, but her willpower didn’t seem firm.
“Someone told me to snatch your phone.”
She was smart and knew what Qiao En wanted to ask; she immediately opened her mouth.
Qiao En grabbed a handful of candies and gave them to her as encouragement.
“Do you remember who that person was?”
Qiao En asked further.
Huahua thought long and hard, then shook her head, “Sixth Auntie has seen her, I haven’t.”
The head of the orphanage quickly explained, “This Sixth Auntie, is actually a human trafficker. She pretended to adopt Huahua but made this teenager go out to the streets to deceive and swindle, using her as a cash cow.”
The head of the orphanage couldn’t continue, sighing and shaking his head.
Hearing this, Qiao En’s heart sank, and she gently stroked Huahua’s hair, “Huahua is a good girl. Auntie will give you all these candies. When Auntie comes to see you next time, I’ll bring you even more candies, okay?”
“Really?”
The surprise filled Huahua’s eyes.
Qiao En extended her right hand, hooking her little finger, “Let’s pinky promise.”
Huahua solemnly made a pinky promise with Qiao En.
“Where is Sixth Auntie? Do you know?”
She asked another question.
Only Sixth Auntie knew what really happened with this affair.
Qiao En knew she had to find Sixth Auntie.
“Sixth Auntie is dead.”
Huahua’s eyelids suddenly drooped.
Qiao En was startled. Sixth Auntie was dead? How could it happen so suddenly?
“When did it happen?”
Qiao En blurted out.
The answer came from the head of the orphanage.
“It happened five days ago. She was out with Huahua pulling scams and got caught. While running away with Huahua, a truck hit her. It was karma; she lost her conscience and did too many bad things—she got what she deserved.”
The head of the orphanage said indignantly.
Qiao En’s mind was in a jumble, her heart was not at peace.
She had an intuition that Sixth Auntie had been silenced.
In this world, only the dead could keep secrets forever.
So, someone took Sixth Auntie’s life.
And for Qiao En to uncover the truth, it had become impossible.
Without finding the real murderer, she would be considered the murderer.
This framing tactic was played smoothly by the other party.
Leaving the orphanage, Cheng Lu drove Qiao En back to the hospital.
She leaned back in the seat with a worried look on her face.
“Don’t worry. Director Zhou is investigating. He will clear your name.”
Cheng Lu spoke out of nowhere.
Qiao En was unsure whether the words were Cheng Lu’s own or if Zhou Jin’an had asked her to say them.
Her natural response was to refuse, “Please tell Director Zhou, it’s not necessary.”
Her demeanor was distant, much like Zhou Jin’an’s.
Cheng Lu couldn’t hold back and defended Zhou Jin’an.
“Secretary Qiao, I think you’ve really misunderstood Director Zhou. He isn’t that he doesn’t believe you; he’s worried you’ll be wronged, so he—”
So he threw his own under the bus?
But what relation was she to him?
To do good for her? He was worried about her being wronged, so he sent her to the police station.
Why didn’t he just send her straight to prison?
The fire that was smoldering in Qiao En’s heart began to flare up again.
“I appreciate Director Zhou’s good intentions, but I really don’t need them.”
