Pokémon Court-Chapter 584: Terrance’ Potential
Chapter 584: Terrance’ Potential
Morty’s Gengar stood still, staring at the Mismagius in the sky. Its sinister grin faded, replaced by a serious expression.
It had sensed it; this opponent was nothing like the Ghost-type Pokémon it had faced before. The opponent’s presence, its aura, was terrifyingly strong. It reminded Gengar of that time, before it had been captured, when it encountered that ancient ghost in Johto’s Burned Tower... and also... a fleeting glimpse of another Gengar belonging to a certain Trainer. [TN: Maybe talking about Suicune here.]
Gengar hadn’t felt pressure like this in a very long time. It wasn’t just because Mismagius was powerful; it was the aura it emitted as a fellow Ghost-type Pokémon that sent chills down its spine. It was like a Caterpie encountering a Pidgeotto—a natural suppression between species.
It was a strange feeling. Clearly they were of the same kind, yet the aura Mismagius gave off made it extremely uncomfortable.
"Gengar... is it worried?"
As the Gym Leader of a Ghost-type Gym and an expert in training Ghost Pokémon, Morty could tell just from Gengar’s expression that, after sensing Mismagius’s strength, it had no confidence in defeating this opponent.
"The last time my Gengar ended up in this kind of state... was against Gengar raised by Elite Four Agatha." Morty fell into deep thought.
Who was Agatha?
As one of the Elite Four from Kanto, the headquarters and birthplace of the Pokémon League, she not only belonged to an incredibly senior generation, a contemporary of Professor Oak, but was also incredibly strong.
To put it bluntly, the newer Elite Four members from other regions were indeed seen as nothing more than fresh rookies in the eyes of Kanto’s old generation Elite Four.
Even when Phoebe, the Ghost-type Elite Four from Hoenn, interacted with Agatha, though they were technically of equal rank, Phoebe still acted respectfully like a junior.
Some people believed that Phoebe showed respect purely due to age, but Morty knew the truth; when in front of Master Agatha, Phoebe was no more than a junior listening intently to guidance.
He had once listened to Agatha’s training insights alongside Phoebe, so he knew better than most.
As an Elite Four member from the older generation, Master Agatha’s training philosophy represented the pinnacle of the Ghost-type field. Only the Pokémon she trained had ever given Morty’s Gengar the illusion of racial suppression.
But now, there was someone else.
"Terrance..." Morty frowned. He couldn’t believe that someone around his own age could already possess such an advanced training method.
He suspected that the other party must have had some kind of miraculous encounter, which by chance allowed his Mismagius to grow to this extent.
Morty didn’t know... but his guess was already incredibly close to the truth. free𝑤ebnovel.com
Gengar...
Silently calling out in his mind, Morty’s pupils contracted. Mismagius and Gengar had moved.
Radiating a terrifying aura, Mismagius descended beside Gengar.
It floated down gently, while Gengar clearly hadn’t reacted yet, intimidated by the gradually approaching fear energy.
"Ge~ngar~" Gengar let out a startled cry, instinctively trying to sink into the ground.
This aura made even Gengar feel fear. It had never experienced such a terrifying aura before. Including Mismagius, many Ghost-type Pokémon feed off human emotions, and fear emotions are their primary sustenance.
Gengar, too, had absorbed fear emotions before, but never had it felt an aura so dread-inducing.
It was as if Mismagius was the very "embodiment of fear", as if its growth had never been separated from "fear energy."
The fear energy accumulated and fermented over several years from the nightmares of 300 children day and night is something even the Pokémon raised by the Elite Four member Agatha had never enjoyed. She might have more cost-effective training methods, or faster ones, but she would absolutely not spend the time and effort on something so unnatural.
What Mismagius enjoyed were resources that only evil forces with "unscrupulous means" could obtain.
With Albus’s help, Terrance seized the treasure trove that Team Nightmare had accidentally created. In that sense, Mismagius was incredibly lucky; it avoided years of hard struggle compared to other Pokémon.
Of course, perhaps someone with wealth, power, and time truly could create a treasure trove specifically to condense fear energy for Pokémon use. But the cost-effectiveness of such an endeavor, solely to raise one Pokémon, is simply too low. There are far, far more efficient methods than this.
That’s why Mismagius’s circumstances are nearly impossible to replicate.
If it weren’t for Mismagius starting from a relatively low foundation, and the fact that it had spent all this time just absorbing fear energy without focusing much on other aspects of its growth, it might already have reached the strength of the main Pokemon of some Elite Four.
Still, even though it hasn’t reached that level yet, it’s already built up a solid foundation. As long as Terrance was willing to invest the time, Mismagius will eventually grow into a Pokémon that can match the strength of the main Pokemon of an Elite Four.
It wasn’t just Mismagius—Castform as well. It possessed four top-tier secret techniques. Any one of them alone is a treasure comparable to Beautifly’s top-level technique. Its path to growth would be no more difficult than Mismagius.
And factoring in the Mega Altaria, perhaps in another year or two, Terrance might truly become a Top Trainer, capable of contending with some of the weaker Elite Four.
Mismagius, a Pokémon that had grown by absorbing pure "fear energy," represented the most primal path of Ghost-type Pokémon development. But in modern society, that path had become far too difficult, and so it was gradually abandoned. Although many brilliant Trainers had since discovered various other methods to train Ghost-type Pokémon into powerful beings, it must be said that absorbing primal negative energy or even human life remains the most direct and brutal method for a Ghost-type Pokémon’s growth.
So, when faced with Mismagius, Gengar cowered. It wasn’t just fear of its strength, this also symbolized that Morty’s method of raising Gengar was less pure compared to the terrifyingly deep foundation Mismagius had gained from devouring massive amounts of "fear energy."
"Mis~magius~"
The incantation, deep enough to pierce the soul, slowly flowed into Gengar’s ears, and Gengar was instantly pulled into a bottomless abyss.
This Gengar’s strength was, at most, only slightly stronger than Mismagius from half a year ago. For the current Mismagius, it was someone it could toy with at will.
Even if it was the main Pokemon of a Gym Leader.
Though Morty was a Gym Leader, he was, after all, the same age as Terrance and had inherited the Gym from his ancestors. When had he ever faced such overwhelming pressure? Mismagius’s power left Gengar with no chance to resist. Before the event was even over, it had already sunk forever into the illusion.
Staring at the collapsed Gengar, everyone knew...that incredibly dominant Terrance from the Flying-type event had returned.
