Chapter 18 - Overworked

The café was bustling with its usual energy, customers flowing in and out as the smell of freshly brewed coffee and baked goods filled the air. Mocha worked tirelessly as always, her towering frame moving gracefully through the space as she greeted customers, served drinks, and tidied tables.

But Mani had noticed something different about her today. Her usual energy seemed dimmed, and her tail, which often swished happily, moved sluggishly.

By midday, she leaned against the counter, her floppy ears drooping. Mani approached her, concern etched across his face.

"Mocha, are you okay?" he asked, placing a gentle hand on her arm.

"I'm fine," she said, forcing a smile. But the way she swayed slightly told a different story.

Mani frowned. "You're exhausted. You've been working too hard lately."

"I can handle it," she said stubbornly, standing up straighter. "The café needs both of us, honey."

But Mani wasn't convinced. "The café can manage with just me for a day. You need to rest, Mocha."

Her red eyes widened, and she shook her head. "No way! It's too much work for you alone. I can't just leave you to handle everything."

Mani smiled gently, taking her hands in his. "I'll be fine. You've been taking care of me and this café for so long—let me take care of you for a change."

Mocha opened her mouth to protest, but the determination in his eyes stopped her. She sighed, her shoulders slumping. "Fine," she said reluctantly. "But if it gets too busy, you call me, okay?"

"I promise," Mani said, guiding her to the back room. "Now go lie down and take it easy."

With Mocha resting, Mani took over her duties. He brewed coffee, served pastries, and even chatted with customers as he worked. The regulars noticed Mocha's absence and asked about her.

"She's just resting today," Mani explained with a smile. "She's been working too hard, so I told her to take a break."

"That's sweet of you," one of the customers said. "But are you sure you can handle all this on your own?"

"I'll manage," Mani replied, his confidence growing with each successful task.

Though the workload was heavy, Mani found a rhythm. He remembered all the little things Mocha usually did—the way she arranged the pastries, how she greeted each customer with a warm smile, and the attention to detail she put into every drink.

By the afternoon, Mani was moving seamlessly through the café, even impressing himself with how well he was keeping up.

In the back room, Mocha lay on the small couch, her ears twitching as she listened to the sounds of the café. Despite her initial reluctance, she couldn't help but feel a sense of pride as she heard Mani handling everything so smoothly.

"He's really doing it," she murmured, a small smile tugging at her lips.

When the café finally closed for the day, Mani locked the door and let out a long sigh of relief. He was tired, but there was a deep sense of satisfaction in knowing he had managed to keep things running smoothly.

Mocha emerged from the back room, looking more rested. "How'd it go?" she asked, her red eyes scanning the tidy café.

"Busy," Mani admitted with a chuckle. "But I think I did okay."

Mocha smiled, pulling him into a tight hug. "You did more than okay, honey. You're amazing."

Mani blushed, resting his head against her chest. "I just wanted to make sure you got the rest you needed. You work so hard every day, Mocha. You deserve a break."

Mocha kissed the top of his head, her tail swishing happily. "Thank you, honey. I don't know what I'd do without you."

"You'll never have to find out," Mani said with a grin.

As they cleaned up together, the love and partnership they shared felt stronger than ever, reminding them both that they could always rely on each other—no matter what.

By the time Mani finished cleaning up the café after the long day, exhaustion had settled into every fiber of his being. Handling both his and Mocha's responsibilities had been rewarding but utterly draining.

As he locked the door and turned to head back into the living room, Mocha was waiting for him on the couch. She had changed into her comfortable lounge clothes, her long red hair falling loosely over her shoulders, and her red eyes softened with affection.

"You look like you're about to collapse, honey," she said, patting the spot beside her. "Come here."

Mani smiled tiredly, shuffling over to her. "I think I've officially learned how hard you work every day," he said with a chuckle, his voice tinged with fatigue.

Mocha's lips curved into a gentle smile. "And I'm proud of you for stepping up like that," she said, taking his hand and pulling him down onto the couch.

Before he could say anything, she shifted him gently, guiding his head to rest between her thick, plush thighs. The warmth and softness of her skin immediately soothed him, and he let out a contented sigh as he settled into the comfortable position.

"Better?" Mocha asked, stroking his hair with her large, gentle hand.

"Much better," Mani murmured, his eyes fluttering closed.

Mocha chuckled, her tail swishing lazily behind her. "You've earned this, honey. You worked so hard today. Let me take care of you now."

She held his hand in hers, her fingers intertwining with his as she continued to run her other hand through his hair. Her touch was soft and rhythmic, and Mani felt the tension in his body begin to melt away.

"You always make me feel so safe," he whispered, his voice barely audible.

"And you always make me feel loved," Mocha replied, leaning down to kiss his forehead.

As they stayed like that, the soft sounds of the house enveloping them, Mani felt his exhaustion give way to a deep sense of comfort and peace.

"You're amazing, Mocha," he said softly, his words muffled by the warmth of her thighs.

"And you're everything to me," Mocha said, her voice filled with affection. "Now rest, honey. I've got you."

With her soothing touch and steady presence, Mani drifted off into a peaceful sleep, knowing he was in the safest place he could ever be—right by her side.
