Quick Transmigration: Drama Queen's Daily Life-Chapter 1018 - 1007: The Undefeated General
Ye Qiu hadn’t planned to get involved in Huang Jiang and Cheng Hu’s affairs, letting them fight amongst themselves was preferable.
"Eldest Lady." After Huang Jiang left, Cheng Hu and Hu Bin came to pay their respects to her.
Ye Qiu quickly asked them to rise: "The two senior brothers should not do this, we are in the army now. Your ranks are higher than mine, and in the future, be cautious with your actions so as not to let the Ye Family Army be accused of forming cliques and resisting imperial orders."
"But you are indeed our Eldest Lady, if that Huang Jiang dares say anything, see if I don’t..."
"Enough, Brother Cheng, take a look at the current situation, some words should not be said carelessly." Just when Cheng Hu was speaking without inhibition, Military Adviser Hu Bin quietly stopped him.
Looking at Ye Qiu’s expressionless face, Cheng Hu looked embarrassed: "I’m sorry, Eldest Lady, I acted impulsively just now."
"Brother Cheng is too concerned about me. I’ve said it before, separate public and private matters, in the army, you need not be overly courteous to me." Ye Qiu smiled somewhat reluctantly, "Can Brother Cheng and Brother Bin tell me about the situation when my second brother was in trouble?"
When they heard this, both their faces turned ugly, and Cheng Hu said with deep regret: "At that time, news came from Pinghu Pass that they were suddenly attacked by the barbarians, asking us to send reinforcements. Who knew as soon as I led the troops there, the barbarians launched a major attack." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
His expression was full of sorrow, and he continued: "Our manpower was insufficient, and we lacked provisions. To protect the citizens in the city, the General stationed troops outside the city gates, and ordered that no one be allowed to open the gates. This lasted for two days without water or provisions, and by the time I returned, the General had already...been captured by the barbarians due to exhaustion."
He immediately knelt down as he spoke: "Eldest Lady, you should punish me, it’s all my fault for arriving late with reinforcements, if I’d been half a day earlier, just half a day, perhaps the General wouldn’t have... I swear, I will grind the barbarians to dust."
"It’s not your fault." Ye Qiu said hoarsely, "General Cheng need not blame himself, get up quickly, I will avenge my brother."
"Miss!" Hearing her say this, Hu Bin couldn’t help but urge loudly, "Brothers will take care of revenge, please trust us, we will bring the General’s remains back."
"I said already, this vengeance, I must take personally." Ye Qiu said coldly.
Not just the barbarians, but Cheng Hu and Hu Bin, she would not spare any of them.
"Miss!" Hu Bin couldn’t help but look at her, his fists clenched, veins bulging on his pale skin, seemingly holding back something.
"You all should return, each to your posts, unless there’s a major issue, don’t come over carelessly again."
Cheng Hu and Hu Bin glanced at each other, lowered their heads helplessly: "Yes."
Before leaving, Cheng Hu still worriedly said: "Miss, if Huang Jiang bullies you, please let me know."
Ye Qiu squinted, letting out a light hum: "He’s not capable of that."
At that moment, the two still hadn’t understood her words, but after their subordinates reported the incident on the march, both displayed a look of surprise.
"Are you saying the Eldest Lady’s martial skills are superior to Huang Jiang’s? Huang Jiang was really beaten back several steps by the Eldest Lady?" Cheng Hu couldn’t resist asking urgently.
"Yes, that’s how it was reported by the people below, with so many witnesses, no one would dare lie."
"So the little junior sister’s martial skills are that impressive!" Cheng Hu muttered, "Looks like I underestimated her."
"Then General, should we alter our plan?" A subordinate asked quietly and cautiously.
"No need, no matter how impressive she is, she’s still just a woman, still just a sixth-rank with no military power. Seeing how she trusts me now, we stick to the original plan, at least when I was in charge, half of the Ye Family Army only obeyed me superficially. To truly win them over, we need to start with the Eldest Lady and Huang Jiang, let’s wait and see."
"Yes, subordinate obeys."
"Also, you need to visit Military Adviser Hu’s home, ensure he doesn’t get distracted and make mistakes, otherwise I won’t show mercy. The promise I made, I’ll certainly fulfill, tell him not to act on his own." Cheng Hu squinted, looking somewhat uneasy.
"Rest assured, Great General, I’ll go immediately."
Promise? What promise?
Ye Qiu quietly left, followed that person to Military Adviser Hu’s home. Hu Bin didn’t live in the barracks but had bought a courtyard in the city. His wife, Ye Qiu’s cousin Tong Minmin, had been at the border for five years.
"It’s late, aren’t you going to rest?" The woman’s gentle voice spoke, the tone was calm, yet Ye Qiu seemed to hear a hint of melancholy within.
"Don’t mind me, I have some official matters to handle." Hu Bin said without turning around.
"I heard the younger cousin arrived today." Tong Minmin said to herself, "You saw her, didn’t you?"
"Yes." Hu Bin didn’t deny it.
"That’s nice." She chuckled softly.
Hu Bin frowned but said nothing.
"The younger cousin rarely comes to the border, she will definitely come to see me. When she arrives, do you need me to notify you?"
"No need."
"Then I’ll head back inside, don’t work too late."
"Min Niang..." Hu Bin seemed to want to say something, but found it difficult to express, ultimately sighing heavily, "I’m sorry, I wronged you."
Tong Minmin chuckled at herself upon hearing: "This is probably karma, after all, I asked Aunt and Uncle to let you marry me back then."
What does that mean? Ye Qiu listened stunned, does this conversation imply their relationship had been bad for years? No wonder they haven’t had children despite being married for years!
But why? If they were unhappy, why didn’t Military Adviser Hu refuse the marriage back then? If Cousin knew he didn’t love her, why didn’t she seek divorce?
Ye Qiu couldn’t understand, she felt there might be another meaning in Cousin’s words about her, suggesting Hu Bin truly loved her, yet that seems impossible!
They married when Ye Qiu was only ten! Moreover, if there was such a feeling, how could he help Cheng Hu in harming her father and brother?
It seems, as Cousin said, she should visit sometime.
The next day was reportedly the day Cheng Hu and Huang Jiang were to hand over military power, Ye Qiu didn’t want to get involved, so she visited Cousin’s home early in the morning. Just as she knocked, she ran into Hu Bin who was about to leave.
He was stunned, seemingly surprised she arrived so early, quickly made a formal bow: "Eldest Lady is here!"
"No need to bow, Brother-in-law, I’m here to see Cousin. Besides, I said yesterday, Brother-in-law’s rank is higher than mine, you don’t need to bow, Ye Qiu can’t bear it."
"The Great General nurtured me to grow up, you will always be the Eldest Lady in my heart." He said with his head lowered.
"So it’s because of my father, seems Military Adviser Hu is loyal to my father." Ye Qiu smiled slightly, her tone revealing no meaning.
But Hu Bin’s heart tightened at the moment, his lips turned pale and tightly pursed, saying nothing further.
