Chapter 401: Please don’t be angry

Demitri stepped out of the interview room, glancing at his watch. It was still lunchtime. Knowing Nora’s usual schedule, he decided to join her for lunch.

Pulling out his phone, he quickly typed a message: "Have you had lunch yet?"

As he made his way toward the elevator, he pressed the button and waited for the doors to open, at the same time, waited for her reply.

The elevator doors slid open, and Demitri stepped inside. A handful of employees occupied the space, but his eyes immediately landed on Nora.

His soft demeanor shift instantly. She was carrying a stack of files, despite it being lunchtime.

Without a word, he took the files from her hands.

"You!?" Nora finally noticed him, her voice hushed in surprise. "Why did you take the files from me?" She reached for them, but he effortlessly kept them out of her grasp.

"Stay quiet," Demitri muttered. He already knew the situation. It was always the same. Her toxic colleagues dumping unnecessary tasks on her, using her as their errand girl. It wasn’t part of her job, yet they treated her like an assistant for their own amusement.

His gaze remained fixed on the digital floor display. As soon as the elevator reached the first floor, he stepped out with files still in hand. Nora hurried after him, matching his stride.

"I’ll carry them, Demitri. You don’t need to do this," she whispered, her tone laced with concern as she glanced around cautiously.

They reached the reception desk, and Demitri set the files down with a decisive thud. He turned to face her, his sharp gaze locking onto hers.

"You need to report this to the front desk executive," he advised her. "Your job isn’t to be their personal errand runner. I saw you earlier. Bringing them coffee, running around with tasks that aren’t yours. This needs to stop."

Nora hesitated, her fingers gripping the edge of the desk. "I took the tasks myself, so don’t be angry," she murmured, eyes darting around the room as if checking to make sure no one overheard.

Demitri clenched his jaw. It wasn’t just about this one time. And he wasn’t going to ignore it.

Demitri took a slow breath, forcing himself to relax. He understood that for Nora, maintaining good relations with her colleagues was important. Pushing his frustration aside, he softened his tone.

"Let’s go out for lunch."

Before Nora could respond, a voice interrupted them.

"Is everything alright?" Layla’s voice carried over, making both of them turn. She stood with Lucius, seemingly on their way out.

Demitri glanced at Nora, who remained silent.

"Yeah, everything’s fine," he answered for her, his tone even. "I was just asking her to lunch."

"I see." Layla gave them both a pointed look before pulling out her phone. Then, she dialed the front desk executive.

Lucius leaned in slightly, lowering his voice as he whispered into Demitri’s ear. "My wife isn’t going to let this slide."

Demitri’s brows furrowed in surprise. "What?" he asked in a hushed tone.

"Just wait and watch," Lucius murmured, a knowing smirk tugging at his lips.

Meanwhile, Layla spoke into the phone. "Hello, Mr. Imanuel Miller. Could you please come to the front desk?" Her tone was polite but carried an authority of a Chairwoman.

Nora stared at Layla in confusion, trying to grasp what was happening.

"Alright," Layla said as she ended the call and slipped her phone into her bag.

"The chairwoman is here!" Aurelia’s voice rang out as she entered with a few other colleagues.

"What?" Maya’s expression shifted to worry.

The group hurried toward the front desk, their faces turning more cautious as they greeted Layla and Lucius.

"Is there something you need us to do, Chairwoman?" Maya asked politely before turning to Nora. "Nora, what’s going on?" She arched a brow, expecting an answer.

But Nora was just as clueless as they were.

"Ma’am!" Imanuel Miller’s voice broke through the murmurs as he rushed toward Layla, slightly out of breath. He quickly straightened himself and greeted her. "Apologies for keeping you waiting. Is everything alright?"

"Not quite, Mr. Miller," Layla responded. "For the past few weeks, I’ve noticed something concerning. The new recruit is being treated unfairly by her colleagues. As far as I know, a receptionist’s job description doesn’t include running personal errands for others."

Her tone wasn’t loud, but it was sharp and stern, which made all the front desk staff to get paled.

"Wh-what?" Imanuel stammered.

Nora’s eyes widened in disbelief. She never expected Layla to notice something like this, let alone bring it up so openly. fгeewёbnoѵel_cσm

"Who has been making the new recruit run errands?" Imanuel demanded, who quickly lowered his eyes.

"And who exactly is the new recruit?" he added with a confusion.

Layla let out a soft chuckle, though her eyes held no amusement. "Mr. Miller, you don’t even know your own staff? That’s quite disappointing from a professional of your stature."

"I—I apologize, Ma’am," Imanuel stuttered, visibly flustered.

"I don’t need your apology. You are responsible for their works, aren’t you, Mr. Miller? Miss Prescott has been treated badly by her colleagues for quite a long time and it truly annoys me. I thought the front desk staff would show some empathy toward their new colleague and not overload her with the work. But it didn’t happen. I want you to give me a detailed report of this misbehavior by this evening," Layla pronounced.

"Sure, Ma’am. Please don’t be angry. I should have worked better and checked everything well," Imanuel took the responsibility and apologized to Layla.

"Nora, make sure to have your lunch and if you find any trouble, come to me anytime," Layla said.

Nora nodded her head and thanked her.

Demitri thanked Layla with a smile, which she understood.

"I’ll see you later, Mr. Miller," Layla said and held Lucius’s arm. "Let’s go," she told him.

"You scold so well," Lucius couldn’t help but praise her. "That’s why you are a boss material."

Layla laughed lightly and they both stepped out of the rotating door.
