Chapter 23: Chapter 23 The Wind Blows and It Falls
Chapter 23 -23 The Wind Blows and It Falls
Over there, Aiguo began to unload the items from his carrying basket and then started preparing the things needed for the trip up the mountain. He inevitably climbed down into the cellar again, retrieving a large watermelon, and took twenty buns, wrapping them with large lotus leaves. He also gathered cooking oil, salt, soy sauce, a coarse porcelain basin with an open top, and four sets of bowls and chopsticks…
“Dad, are you planning to cook meals on the mountain by bringing the pottery basin and bowls and chopsticks?” Seeing how neatly everything was prepared and noticing the bottom of the basin, Yun realized her father must have done this sort of thing quite often before.
“Yes, we’re going to have a picnic. Do you like that, Xiaoyun?” Aiguo chuckled and patted Yun’s head, “When we get to the mountain, I will pick fruit for you, and if we’re lucky, we might even catch wild chickens or rabbits to eat.”
“Great, I love it.” Yun also burst into laughter. Such a picnic seemed like it would be a wonderful experience, and she was already eager to start. “Why hasn’t Shitou come yet?”
“I’m here.”
The sound of Shitou’s voice arose at the kitchen doorway. Aiguo and Yun simultaneously looked over.
Oh, isn’t this just like the saying, speak of the devil and he appears?
“Shitou, you’re here, Mom has already served the meal in the main room, hurry up and wash your hands to eat, don’t delay our big picnic plans,” said Yun as she ran over to take his hand and pulled him towards the water well outside in the courtyard.
Shitou, with his hand softly held by the little girl, could only be passively dragged away.
A picnic is a big deal?
This was a fresh way to look at it, and a curious expression instantly appeared on his face.
Yun didn’t think there was anything wrong with her expression. What she felt at that moment was that Aijun in his childhood was really down-to-earth; a tug and he’d obediently follow. But what about trying the same with the grown-up “Aijun”?
So, the little figure in Yun’s heart was certainly filled with smug satisfaction at that moment, and she grinned widely.
The “Aijun” from her memories had always been way too cool for his own good, and annoyingly handsome to boot. Quite a few neighbors had approached her to inquire about him. But back then, she had been too afraid of him, hardly daring to breathe loudly in his presence, let alone have any sort of physical contact.
This lifetime, with someone to back her up, she finally didn’t have to be completely suppressed by his strong aura anymore. She could take advantage of the “male god” before he truly became a “god.” Missing out on “tofu” when she could eat it, or on a bargain when she could get it, would just be foolish, wouldn’t it?
Puffed up with pride, Yun felt triumphant and started bossing around the future male god with great gusto.
“You better not forget to wash your hands before meals and after going to the bathroom. Otherwise worms might crawl into your belly. Hey, you boys are all so careless, you really don’t match up to us girls. I’ll remind you in the future, I promise not to let your stomach get upset, no need to thank me.”
Yun put on a face that seemed to say, “Hurry up and thank me,” but after waiting for quite a while, she didn’t hear Aijun retort or even make a sound?
What’s with him, was he already this cold and unapproachable as a child, on top of being blind to subtlety?
Yun turned her head to look at him and saw the future “male god” staring at her dumbfounded, with a big, embarrassed expression on his face.
“You really don’t have to say thank you to me.”
Yun frowned, pouting her lips, and her face was full of grievance.
Uh!
Shitou looked bewildered at the quirky little girl in front of him, who, with a serious demeanor, spoke insincere words like an adult teaching a child.
His lips quirked up as he focused intently on her, and he finally said the words she wanted to hear as he saw her about to cry, “Thank you.”
“No need to thank me. We’re family, and you can’t be so polite with us in the future.”
The little girl’s mood brightened instantly, her eyes crinkling with a satisfied smile as she nodded her head.
Seeing her content look, Shitou didn’t know why, but he finally couldn’t hold back his laughter.
Lu Aiguo followed behind, chuckling incessantly. Xiaoyun was really too amusing.

As they washed their hands and entered the main room, Xia Yuan promptly greeted them upon their arrival, “Shitou, you’re here, come eat. We’re going up the mountain later.”
“Mom, Dad said we’re going for an outdoor cookout. He even brought a clay pot and dishes,” Lu Yun ran over excitedly to hug Xia Yuan’s thigh. The male god I just met thanked me, I’m so thrilled, but it’s a pity I can’t share it with anyone.
“Right, we’re going for a cookout later,” Xia Yuan, infected by her excitement, laughed as well. She turned and saw Shitou still standing, so she urged, “Why aren’t you sitting down yet? We’ve all eaten already. All this is for you.”
Shitou glanced at the table. The big bowl filled with egg soup contained large chunks of eggs, clearly not sparing the eggs. Another bowl held big buns, plump and white without any discoloration. He swallowed.
“Sister-in-law… that’s too much. I can’t eat all that. Leave the eggs for Xiaoyun. I can just take a bun and eat it on the way. It’ll be enough to fill me up, and it won’t delay us either.”
“She’s already eaten, all three of us have. This is all for you. I cooked it especially for you. Are you saying you don’t like what your sister-in-law cooked?”
Xia Yuan glared at him, “Don’t think I don’t know what you’re thinking. You just see me as an outsider, don’t you? Unwilling to eat what I cook, right? Just one bun is enough? Are you joking? Xiaoyun can polish off two big buns plus eggs and white porridge without even gasping for breath. And you, a strapping young man, can’t manage that?”
“Mom, I don’t usually eat that much,” Lu Yun protested.
“It’s not like that, sister-in-law,” Shitou interjected.
Shitou and Lu Yun spoke almost at the same time. Shitou hadn’t had a chance to say much when Lu Yun already became visibly upset.
How could mom reveal my weaknesses in front of my future hero, I just ate a bit more because I was craving it. Mom remembers it so clearly and even talks about it everywhere. Wu wu wu.
Lu Yun’s look of indignation brought laughter to the other three present.
Shitou looked at Lu Aiguo.
“Don’t look at me, I stand by my wife,” Lu Aiguo declared with a laugh, embracing Lu Yun. “My dear, why are you in such a rush when your mom tells Shitou to eat?”
“Mom said I can eat a lot, I need to diet,” Lu Yun blurted out in frustration, without thinking.
“You’re as skinny as a rail, why on earth do you need to diet? Where did you pick up such notions? I was praising you. You can’t even tell apart good from bad talk,” Xia Yuan rebuked with a stern look, then reached out and pulled Shitou to sit down, “And you, you’re even skinnier than a bamboo pole. You want to become a soldier, but how can anyone accept you if you could blow over in the wind? Stop the chatter and sit down to eat. You’re not leaving until you finish everything.”
“I won’t blow over in the wind,” Shitou said, glancing at the bowl then looking up deeply into Xia Yuan’s eyes.
“If you don’t start eating more, you’ll end up like that,” Xia Yuan cut in unsparingly, shoving a bun into his hand and urging him on, “Eat up, if you don’t, your sister-in-law will really get angry.”
Lu Aiguo embraced the pouting and indignant Lu Yun, laughing so hard he was shaking, especially at Xia Yuan’s “blow over in the wind” comment, which almost made him choke with laughter.
