Chapter 58: Chapter 58 Ironing and Patching
Chapter 58 -58 Ironing and Patching
“Don’t forget the grapes, I almost forgot them again. We didn’t bring any to Great Uncle’s house either,” Lu Yun reminded her.
“I remember. Dad will go over to Great Uncle’s tonight. Why are you so naggy? You really are a little worrywart,” Xia Yuan said, rubbing her daughter’s head while speaking, yet the corners of her mouth curved up. How come she found her daughter’s temperament more and more similar to Lu Aiguo’s? That fussy nature was as if cast from the same mold.
Am I really being too naggy? Lu Yun reflected inwardly and then flashed a bright smile at Xia Yuan.
With a basket in hand, Xia Yuan held Lu Yun’s hand as they walked to Lu Erbo’s (second uncle’s) house. The basket was filled with a bunch of freshly picked grapes, which neither Lu Dabo (elder uncle) nor Lu Erbo had cultivated—in fact, no one in Yushu Village had, making theirs utterly unique.
The grapevine in Lu Aiguo’s yard had been there for three or four years, surviving through the house renovations and now ready to bear fruit, he hadn’t the heart to dig it up.
They arrived at Lu Erbo’s house quickly; the gate to the courtyard was wide open. Xia Yuan didn’t call out to anyone and directly led Lu Yun toward the kitchen. When they got to the door and looked inside, as expected, Erbo’s wife and Zhang Cai were both there.
There were also two unfamiliar women and a young boy about three or four years old—the likely candidates were Lu Aijiao and her sister, Lu Aimei. The boy was probably Lu Aijiao’s son, Xie Jifu.
Seeing Xie Jifu sitting obediently in the corner, holding a piece of yunpian gao pastry about the size of a child’s palm, Xia Yuan and Lu Yun found it quite amusing as he meticulously licked it like a kitten.
“Erbo’s wife,”
“Second Grandma, Fourth Auntie,” the mother and daughter called out to each respectively.
“Xia Yuan, Xiaoyun, come quick, I was just talking about you,” Erbo’s wife said, looking up to see Xia Yuan and Lu Yun, she quickly set down the pot lid to greet them. The others also stopped what they were doing and came over. Even Xie Jifu blinked his large eyes, curiously glancing at Xia Yuan and then at Lu Yun.
“This is Third Aunt and Second Cousin. The delicious meat you had for lunch was brought by Third Uncle and Third Aunt. Go on, say hello,” Lu Aijiao told Xie Jifu with a smile, gesturing towards Xia Yuan.
There had been mei cai kou rou, the pork belly dish, at lunch, and it was so deliciously tender that it melted in the mouth—a sensation the little boy practically wanted to swallow his tongue for. He had devoured four big chunks of the meat by himself, and had it not been for his mother stopping him, he probably could have eaten three more.
Xie Jifu, with gleaming eyes, got up and hid behind his mother, peeking out with a bashful and shy expression. After a pause, he revealed a big smile and said with a clear voice, “Third Aunt, Second Cousin. The meat was yummy.”
Lu Yun burst out laughing. Was this person really this interesting even as a child?
“Jifu is such a good boy. You’ll have more yummy meat to eat at dinner, and later Third Aunt will give you some chocolate, okay?” Xia Yuan’s heart melted on the spot.
Unexpectedly, as soon as her words fell, Xie Jifu crammed the remainder of the yunpian gao into his mouth and, in a swift motion, dashed over and hugged her leg, dribbling saliva and cooing in a voice impossible to resist, “Third Aunt, I want chocolate.”
Even though he didn’t know what chocolate was, anything good to eat offered by the aunt who brought delicious meat was sure to be tasty.
The young Xie Jifu from then on became utterly convinced that this smiling, lovely aunt in front of him was the one. Later on, he would turn into her ardent little sidekick, a “true fan” whenever they met—but of course, that’s a story for another time.
“Hahaha.” At this point, everyone was completely tickled by his greedy little display.
Little foodie.
Lu Yun secretly rolled her eyes. A cow is still a cow even if you take it to Beijing, and the same is true for food lovers. In his past life, this guy was a foodie who ended up becoming a famous critic for a well-known gourmet magazine. And now in this life, he’s showing his food-loving traits at such a young age?
Xia Yuan held back her laughter, hurriedly uncovering the cloth on top of the basket she brought, revealing two boxes of chocolate, all with foreign writing, placed atop a pile of grapes.
Setting down the basket, Xia Yuan squatted down and handed Xie Jifu a box of chocolate to hold, then opened the other box and popped one piece into his mouth, asking, “Is it good?”
“Mmm-hmm!”
Xie Jifu puffed up his little cheeks and nodded vigorously. Then continued to gaze at Xia Yuan, stars twinkling in his eyes, clutching the box of chocolate even tighter.
“You give everyone here a piece from this box, and then take the rest and the unopened box home to eat slowly. Don’t eat too much at once, okay?” Xia Yuan pushed the chocolate in her hand a little closer to him. With thirty-six pieces per box, there was more than enough to go around.
“Okay. Thank you, Auntie.” Xie Jifu tried to take the opened box of chocolates but found he couldn’t hold two boxes; hence, after thinking for a while, he first went back to Lu Aijiao, handing her the intact box to hold. He then turned back to receive the opened box, giving Xia Yuan a piece first before starting to distribute them to everyone else.

He took his task seriously, ensuring everyone got their share, and Lu Yun was no exception. However, Lu Yun was a bit squeamish about his chocolate- and saliva-coated hand, and so she shook her head and refused. Xie Jifu didn’t mind, and popped the chocolate into his mouth, beaming at Lu Yun with a sunny smile.
He didn’t perceive his cousin’s refusal as an act of repulsion; he thought she was just letting him have it, which immediately increased his fondness for Lu Yun.
“Jifu, take this to the hall and share it with your great-grandfather and fourth uncle too. Don’t eat any more afterwards, or you won’t have room for dinner later,” Lu Aijiao said to her son with a chuckle after he’d handed out the chocolates.
Watching her son nod and run off, she turned to Xia Yuan with feigned annoyance, “Little sister, you really didn’t have to bring these. Wouldn’t it have been enough just for Xiaoyun to have them? Aren’t those foreign words on there difficult to come by?”
“Sister, Aiguo brought back three boxes. We still have one box at home. But it seems that Xiaoyun doesn’t really like them,” Xia Yuan glanced at her daughter, accurately addressing the identity of the person she was speaking to.
In the meantime, she made an excuse for her daughter’s earlier refusal of the chocolate Xie Jifu offered; nobody else knew, but she was well aware that her daughter actually did find it off-putting. Hence, she fabricated a story while speaking earnestly to Lu Aijiao.
There weren’t many people in the kitchen. Although she hadn’t met them before, identifying the two sisters through Xie Jifu wasn’t hard.
Lu Aijiao and the others thought Xia Yuan was just being polite. Since they had all enjoyed the chocolates and knew how tasty they were, what child wouldn’t love them? They could tell those chocolates were something special. Knowing that Xia Yuan had only three boxes but still brought two, mostly for Jifu, Lu Aijiao felt incredibly gratified in her heart. Her gaze at Xia Yuan was filled with gratitude.
