Lu Yun ran into the room, and when she saw the items Xia Yuan had packed, she was stunned.
Wasn’t this practically moving house? Clothes, shoes, socks, towels, and other personal items for several people, then there were bedsheets, blankets, straw mats, pillows, washbasins, and even a wooden toilet for use in the room at night…
It seemed that wasn’t everything; kitchen items were still left because they hadn’t had dinner and hadn’t packed them yet.
Lu Yun immediately felt embarrassed; if they took all this, the house would seem so empty everywhere.
Lu Yun mischievously thought, if by chance a burglar visited during these days they were away and saw the empty house, would they be frightened into having a fit?
Imagining a burglar stunned on the spot, completely puzzled, Lu Yun found it more and more amusing, and couldn’t help bursting into laughter.
“What’s so funny?” Xia Yuan slapped Lu Yun lightly, clearly aware that she might have exaggerated a bit. But wasn’t it all just to make traveling more convenient? Everything could be used…
“Mom, just bringing a few sets of clothes to change into would be enough, the big warehouse has everything else.”
Lu Yun quickly ceased her laughter and seriously said so. In reality, there were plenty of clothes in their space, but none of them were suitable for this era’s aesthetic. Even if she took them out, they would only be worn at home, and if she wanted to wear them outside, she’d have to patiently wait a few years.
That evening, when Lu Aiguo and Shitou came back, Lu Yun turned the story into a joke at the dinner table, adding, “What if a burglar comes to our house and gets so scared that he turns foolish, what do we do then?”
“You just worry too much,” Lu Aiguo and Shitou both imagined the empty house and couldn’t help but chuckle, with Lu Yun laughing the loudest amongst them.
Xia Yuan, seeing Lu Yun laughing so hard she cried, twitched the corner of her mouth, somewhat wanting to laugh but holding it back. She felt a little helpless but couldn’t bring herself to scold her daughter, only “ferociously” glaring over with her eyes — this heartless little girl, it seems I’ve spoiled you for nothing.
“Stop laughing.”
Lu Aiguo, sensitive to the mood, immediately noticed Xia Yuan’s displeasure. His wife being unhappy made him feel all sorts of discomfort, and he quickly coughed loudly at Lu Yun. Then he leaned over to Xia Yuan, praising her in an unusually saccharine tone.
“Wife, Xiaoyun is just short-sighted. You’re the prudent and thoughtful one. Without you managing things, how would we manage to live?”
Lu Yun’s laughter cut off abruptly; she touched her arm, feeling goosebumps all over. Glancing at Xia Yuan, she saw her face light up instantly, her eyes sparkling as she beamed at Lu Aiguo.
“Really?”
“Really, truer than gold,” Lu Aiguo immediately nodded solemnly.
“Look at what your daughter is laughing at, and you’re trying to sweet-talk me?” Xia Yuan’s expression changed in an instant, her hand “smack” lightly patted Lu Aiguo’s face, which no matter how one looked at it, seemed obsequiously flattering. Then she shifted her hand, twisting Lu Aiguo’s ear, grinding her teeth in frustration.
“Lu Aiguo, do you think I’m that easy to deceive?”
The voice was deafening, a real-life version of the roar of the lioness from the east. Lu Yun and Shitou exchanged glances, both unable to bear to look straight at them.
“No, no, our daughter isn’t laughing at you. It’s just, it’s just…” Lu Aiguo didn’t get angry at all. Instead, he looked at Xia Yuan with almost teary eyes, unable to come up with any excuse, his broad face contorted into a sorrowful expression resembling that of Lin Daiyu.
“What is it?” Xia Yuan suppressed her laughter, casually fixing her gaze on Lu Aiguo, waiting for him to continue.
Lu Aiguo: “…”
Then, immediately.
“Heh heh, it’s getting late, wife. We still need to eat and then head up the mountain. Hurry up, we’re almost out of time…” Realizing that the sorrowful approach wasn’t working, Lu Aiguo quickly shifted his tone and, without further discussion, hugged Xia Yuan and led her out of the house. All the way, he accompanied her with laughter, especially tender as he bent down and whispered something in her ear that made Xia Yuan burst into continuous laughter.
Shitou and Lu Yun trailed behind, exchanging a glance before they both started to chuckle under their breaths.
In just a few short days, the changes in both dad and mom seemed to have grown increasingly significant. Lu Yun smiled as she watched their backs, feeling a sense of unreality wash over her. It was in these few short days that she also felt as if her past life had truly become a thing of the past. The sorrows in her memories seemed to be so far away that without making a conscious effort to remember them, they seemed almost forgotten…
“Let’s go.”
When Shitou saw her lost in thought, he couldn’t help but reach out and take her small hand. The soft and tender touch made his heart suddenly soften as well.
Lu Yun looked up at him and didn’t pull away from the tightly held hand, a feeling of reassurance filling her completely.
“Okay, let’s go.”
—
Having the experience of going up the mountain before, Xia Yuan and Lu Yun felt more confident and relaxed as they walked the mountain path again.
Plus, with Lu Yun’s spatial ability—this super cheat tool—they had an easier time this round. Both Lu Aiguo and Shitou were just carrying empty baskets for show.
The group first visited the “secret base” hot spring area, arriving past eleven. They took out the goji berries they had gathered the previous day and spread them out to continue drying. Each person then had a large bowl of noodles from Lu Yun’s space, and they opened a can of beef in sauce to share. Lu Aiguo and Shitou even had extra portions with two large servings of fried beef steak and lamb chop each. It was only after noon that everyone set off for the chestnut forest.
The chestnut forest was quite far, and even with Lu Aiguo and Shitou’s pace, it still took an hour and a half’s walk to reach it.
Lu Yun, already exhausted, was carried alternately on Lu Aiguo and Shitou’s shoulders. Xia Yuan walked by herself the whole way, firmly refusing the several times Lu Aiguo offered to carry her, worried it would tire him out.
Once, when Xia Yuan was so out of breath that Lu Aiguo insisted on carrying her, she only let him carry her for less than ten minutes before struggling to get down.
Afterward, Lu Aiguo started suggesting from time to time to carry her for a short distance, and Xia Yuan was able to accept two or three times out of ten.
And so they walked, Lu Yun occasionally using her space to gather three wild chickens, two wild rabbits, and two nests of wild chicken eggs. This bountiful harvest lifted everyone’s spirits, making their uphill journey feel a bit more lighthearted.
It wasn’t until around two-twenty in the afternoon that they finally reached the wild chestnut forest.
This pace naturally couldn’t compare with when Lu Aiguo and Shitou went up the mountain by themselves. Not only did these two walk exceptionally fast, they usually started out early. By this time yesterday, they had almost finished picking the chestnuts and had started heading back.
