Rebirth: I became rich by farming-Chapter 33 - Sweet Potato Corn
Chapter 33: Chapter 33 Sweet Potato Corn
Chapter 33 -33 Sweet Potato Corn
Fan Hongwei’s high regard for Mei Mengzhen suddenly rose, surprising everyone in the family. After listening for a while, Fan Tianyu finally found an opportunity to join the conversation and hurriedly asked, “Dad, you didn’t use to say that. You always said that Zhenzhen was the kind of child who is too timid and honest to amount to much.”
Fan Tianhua had also heard such talk in the household and wondered why there was such a drastic change, “What made you change your mind so suddenly?”
“Experience,” he said. “As I just mentioned, a person who has been through so much and can adjust her mindset so quickly and make changes has very strong adaptability. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I feel that Zhenzhen, having lost her parents, has actually freed her true nature. In a way, it’s not a bad thing for her. The same goes for Chenchen. Let’s just wait and see. Based on the current situation, I think Zhenzhen is likely to be more promising than the two of you.”
Fan Hongwei smiled. These words came from his heart, so he spoke them out loud. He didn’t mind praising someone else’s child and potentially making his own children uncomfortable. If they were bothered by it, it meant he hadn’t raised them right, bringing up children so narrow-minded that they couldn’t stand others doing well. But he was confident in his own children. Hearing such words, they should be more motivated to work harder.
As expected, his children did not disappoint him. Fan Tianhua made up his mind, “Then I really need to work hard. I’m not much older than Zhenzhen. What if she surpasses me?”
Fan Tianyu also nodded earnestly, “I need to work hard too, but I’ll focus on getting through this week first. There’s no need to rush in just this one week; the final year of high school hasn’t even started yet.”
The children had a good attitude, but when Mei Yinan heard this, she didn’t see it the same way. Why should they boost someone else’s morale at the expense of their own children’s? Yet, she didn’t say anything. If Zhenzhen was doing better, that was a good thing; it meant she could take better care of Chenchen.
Mei Mengzhen had no idea that after she left, Fan Hongwei had given her such high praise. Even if she did know, she would accept it modestly. Her confidence naturally came from the space. With the space, she didn’t know how much she would achieve in her life, but she was sure she would live a good life.
After the siblings returned home, she immediately poured a cup of Spiritual Spring Water for her brother. As for herself, she opened the refrigerator door and, using it as cover, filled up the space inside from top to bottom.
Once Mei Mengchen had gone to bed, she took out many sweet potatoes, corn, all kinds of fruits, and the vegetables they would eat in the next couple of days, arranging them in various nooks of the kitchen for easy access. Of course, this included the grapes that Mei Mengchen wanted.
The fruits from her space didn’t need washing and could be eaten right away. She picked the grapes one by one and placed them on a plate, ready for Mei Mengchen to eat when he woke up from his nap.
After finishing these tasks, it was already past 4 o’clock. She thought Fan Tianyu would come over in the evening but wasn’t sure if Fan Tianhua would join, so she steamed quite a lot of corn and sweet potatoes for dinner.
Both layers of the steamer were filled to the brim. Half an hour later, the food was cooked, and Fan Tianyu and Fan Tianhua, the siblings, arrived at her place.
Mei Mengzhen hurried to the door. Seeing that it was the two of them, she said, “You’ve arrived just in time. I’ve just finished steaming the corn and sweet potatoes.”
“We’ve already eaten,” said Fan Tianhua.
“No problem,” she replied. “Have some more. Corn and sweet potatoes don’t take up much space in the stomach.” In truth, they did take up space, she just didn’t want to eat with Chenchen and have the others watch them, and besides, it wasn’t considered a main meal. Although it seemed early, they had indeed eaten before coming over.
Mei Mengzhen hadn’t even lifted the lid of the pots yet, having just turned off the gas. Fan Tianyu took over the task, “Let me do that, so you don’t get burned.”
He grabbed two dish towels and moved the pot to the sink before saying, “Why don’t you use a rice cooker to steam them? It’s not so hot, and what if Chenchen comes over and gets burned because you weren’t paying attention?”
“Chenchen doesn’t enter the kitchen,” Mei Mengzhen said nonchalantly. “Even if he comes to find me, he just stands at the door. Also, sweet potatoes don’t cook well in a rice cooker.”
As for Mei Mengchen, she had already set ground rules with her brother. The boy had a good memory and feared that if he got burned, his sister would be worried, so he never entered the kitchen.
Mei Mengzhen washed two large plates and a pair of serving tongs and handed them to Fan Tianyu to transfer the food onto the plates before serving it on the table.
“Help yourselves. I cooked enough for both of you. At home, we usually steam two ears of corn and one sweet potato, and that’s enough. The rest is all for you.”
But children shouldn’t eat too much corn, so usually, Chenchen would eat half an ear, while she ate one and a half. They split a sweet potato between them. The corn and sweet potatoes from her space were quite large, so there was really enough to go around.
The siblings didn’t truly believe that corn and sweet potatoes would be enough for dinner, but after seeing the food on the table, they accepted Mei Mengzhen’s assurance that she wasn’t lying.
Mei Mengzhen took a wooden chopstick and jabbed it firmly into the center, then passed the other half of her ear of corn to Mei Mengchen.
Mei Mengchen held the wooden chopstick in his hand and blew on the corn before finally taking small bites and eating it.
Mei Mengzhen was used to this behavior already and found her brother’s way of eating rather cute.
She also stuck a chopstick into her half ear of corn and turned to the siblings, “Really, don’t be shy. It won’t taste good leftover for tomorrow.”
Whether it was rice or anything else, leftovers never tasted as good. Of course, that’s under the condition that eating leftovers could be avoided. But if the circumstances required it, what’s wrong with eating leftovers, even if a few nights have passed?

The siblings weren’t fussy and ate the food from Mei Mengzhen’s house with relish, knowing they could simply buy more to replenish her stock. Thus, eating the corn came with no pressure.
However, when they tasted the food from the space for the first time, both of them revealed shocked expressions. “This is so delicious,” they said in amazement.
Hurriedly taking another bite, the siblings felt the heat from the freshly steamed corn, making it difficult to close their mouths properly. Mei Mengzhen commented, “The sweet potatoes are delicious too, but the steamer is too small to fit more than five.” They were squeezed against the sides of the pot, and the situation was the same for the corn—split in halves to fit five pieces, since otherwise the lid wouldn’t close.
True enough, after trying the sweet potatoes, both gave them rave reviews.
But having eaten dinner before coming over and then consuming so much more, they were indeed too full. Patting their bellies, they didn’t want to move. Fan Tianyu said, “I feel like I’m going to throw up if I move.”
Fan Tianhua felt much the same, “Pretty much.”
“If you can’t eat any more, don’t force it. It’s uncomfortable to be overstuffed.” She and her brother had been in the same position before, so she knew how it felt. Immediately, she brought out some digestives that were left over and handed them to the two.
