Chapter 36: You’re My Pillows Tonight!

Opening her eyes, Vanessa looked around and, as she had expected, she was at the hospital, the lights were slightly din so she couldn’t see very well.

She tried to move but was immediately hit by a sharp pain in her shoulder.

Hissing out loud, Rowen, who had been sleeping beside the chair next to her bed, immediately woke up and ran toward her.

"Are you alright? Do you need any help?" Rowen asked, panic filling his eyes.

"Not really, it just hurts!" she stated, her eyes becoming teary. Seeing this, Rowen pulled her close for a hug.

"I’m sorry, it’s all my fault... I couldn’t protect you," Rowen blamed himself, but Vanessa shook her head.

"It’s not your fault. I was the one who went to meet you, even though you told me to stay at the hotel... I’m sorry," Vanessa apologized as Rowen sighed.

"How long have I been asleep?" Vanessa asked.

"Well, for three days now. The doctor said you’re free to go home, but your wounds aren’t completely healed yet."

Nodding, Vanessa said, "I have to go back to Graceland. The premiere of my movie is in two days. I have to go, no matter what."

But Rowen disagreed, his brow furrowed. "No! Your health comes first!"

"I know, but I’ll be alright. It doesn’t hurt so much anymore... I’ll be fine."

"Why do you always put your career on the line, Vanessa? It’s one of the reasons we lost each other in the first place."

Rowen said, and Vanessa’s eyes widened slightly. Adjusting himself, Rowen added, "I’ll go get things ready for us to leave. Stay here. I’ll be back."

With that, he stood up, and Vanessa just lay on the bed, her mind drifting elsewhere.

Soon, Vanessa was discharged, and they made their way back to Graceland.

Upon arriving at the Quinn mansion, Vanessa and Rowen were met with a bunch of people gathered at the house.

Stepping into the large mansion, Vanessa heard the voice of her mother, "Vanessa!" Mrs. Owen and Kami ran toward her, hugging her tightly.

Worry showed all over her face as Linda asked, "Vanessa, my dear, are you alright? Do you know how much your mother has been worried?"

"Since Rowen informed us of the incident, we’ve been restless. Are you alright, sister?"

They both cried as they held Vanessa tight. Seeing her mom and sister, Vanessa hugged them too, while Rowen just watched, feeling like the fourth wheel.

Walking toward them was Catherine, who had an awkward expression on her face.

Her relationship with Vanessa wasn’t great, so she didn’t know how to approach her.

"Umm... Vanessa, I-I heard that you took a bullet in my son’s place. I don’t know why you did it, but... t-thank you. I really appreciate it."

Frowning, Linda gave Catherine a sharp look. "You don’t know why she did it? What other reason than the fact that she loves Rowen? No ordinary person risks their life for someone if it isn’t love."

"Oh, please. We all know that Vanessa doesn’t love Rowen. Yes, she saved his life, but that doesn’t cover all the awful things she’s done to my son," Catherine remarked, unshaken.

Hearing that made Rowen frown slightly. Giving his mother a warning stare, he then said, "Mrs. Owen, don’t worry about Vanessa. I heard you’ve been here all night... Why don’t you go back home and leave Vanessa to me? I’ll take good care of her."

He said as Linda and Kami were reluctant to leave, but Vanessa reassured them she would be alright.

"Alright then, we’ll visit first thing tomorrow... Take care of yourself." And with that, they hugged each other goodbye and left.

Facing Rowen, Catherine shouted, "Why don’t you let her go back to her mother? What is she doing here?"

Having had enough of his mother’s taunts, Rowen stated, "Vanessa is my responsibility. The only reason she’s in this state is because of me. It’s my duty to make sure she’s well taken care of, and I can’t do that if she stays with her mother."

With that, he pulled Vanessa into the house as Catherine just scoffed and walked away.

Vanessa was taken to her room, and the maids were immediately instructed to clean and arrange it.

Entering her old room, flashes of her past life flooded her mind. She remembered how this room used to be her hiding spot, where she hid to avoid her motherly and wifely responsibilities.

"I don’t want to stay here!" she said, and Rowen looked at her face and nodded, not bothering to ask why.

"I’ll go ask the maids to clean one of the guest rooms for you... You can stay in my room for the time being," he said as she nodded happily.

"What about Tara? I don’t see her anywhere."

"Mariam came a couple of days ago to take her out for some aunt and niece time," he answered.

"Since when?" Vanessa was confused.

"They do that every so often. You would know... If you had—" Rowen cut himself off as he turned around. "Go to my room and rest. When your room is ready, I’ll have the maids call for you."

With that, she left the room as Vanessa sighed.

Later that night, Vanessa tried to get some sleep, but she just couldn’t. Her shoulder ached, and she felt lonely.

Standing up, she tiptoed her way to Rowen’s room, but he wasn’t inside.

Instead, she found the door to his study open, and she knew he was busy with some work.

A man who had just nearly lost his life didn’t know when to rest.

Knocking lightly, Vanessa heard his low voice from inside, "Come in!"

Stepping into the study, she didn’t think twice before walking toward him, sitting on his lap, and resting her head on his broad chest.

"Your chest will be my pillow tonight!"
