Chapter 48: Chapter 48

Pulling to a stop, Vanessa sighed. She hated traffic jams more than anything in the world. As she turned on her radio, she relaxed back in her car, listening to the words of the newscasters.

As expected, one of the latest topics of the day was concerning Rowen’s engagement, and just hearing it alone made her frown. She knew Rowen had only agreed to the engagement because she had accepted Erin’s proposal. If only he knew why she was doing what she was doing, would he still judge her? She knew deep down he still loved her if only his pride wasn’t getting the better of him

Just then, her eyes shifted toward the sidewalks, and to her surprise, someone familiar caught her attention. It was Tara. Her Tara. "What the hell is Tara doing here?" she voiced out.

Widening her eyes in shock, Vanessa quickly got out of her car and ran toward the little girl. She was dressed in a white dress, wearing her blue sweater and black backpack. Looking around the huge city, the little girl felt like crying at that point. But as soon as she laid eyes on her mother, it was as though her entire world had lit up at that moment.

"Mommy!" Tara teared up as she ran toward Vanessa. The two hugged each other tightly. A worried expression plastered all over Vanessa’s face as she held her daughter tightly, wiping away the tears that fell from her eyes.

"Tara? What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be at the mansion? What are you doing here?"

Sobbing, Tara said slowly, "I-I ran away from home, Mama. Papa is bad. Papa wants to marry Aunt Rachel. I don’t want him to. I want him to be with Mama forever, no one else." She said, and Vanessa sighed.

Seeing her daughter in tears made her feel guilty. She wished she could just let go of everything and fulfill the little girl’s wish, but since she had started it, she had to finish it, or else she would face the consequences.

Gently stroking her daughter’s hair, Vanessa smiled faintly. "My love, don’t worry. One day, your wish will be fulfilled, I promise you. For now, just let Papa do what he wants. Soon, everything will be just as you want, do you hear me?"

Nodding, Tara hugged her mom once more as Vanessa carried her straight to the car.

.....

TARA’S LETTER:

PAPA, I DON’T WANT YOU TO MARRY AUNT RACHEL. I ONLY WANT MAMA, BUT YOU DON’T WANT TO GIVE ME MAMA, SO I WILL GO FIND MAMA MYSELF. I DON’T WANT ANYONE ELSE EXCEPT MAMA. GOODBYE PAPA. TARA LOVES YOU.

Upon reading the contents of the letter, Rowen almost felt like fainting. Tara didn’t know anywhere in the city. What if something bad happened to her? She was just a little child.

His entire mind was in chaos at the moment. Passing by Rachel, he immediately took out his phone and dialed a number. "My daughter just left the mansion. Send your men to search the entire Graceland... you must find her at any cost!"

He instructed as he turned to George. "Go get the car ready. We leave in five." George nodded and did as instructed.

Stepping into the living room were Catherine and Mariam, who were unaware of what was happening. Turning to her son, Catherine questioned, "Rowen, what is the ruckus about? Where are you going?"

"Mother, Tara left the mansion. I don’t know how, but I have to go look for her." Rowen explained as Catherine and Mariam exchanged glances in shock.

"What? How did she leave the mansion? And where to?"

"I don’t know, Mother. That’s what I’m going to find out." Rowen said as George appeared, informing him that the car was ready. But just as they were about to leave, Catherine stopped them.

"Don’t tell me you’re going to look for her? For crying out loud, Rowen, today is your engagement. In a few minutes, the guests will start arriving. You can’t just leave."

Taken aback by his mother’s words, Rowen frowned. "My daughter is missing, Mother. Your granddaughter, and all you can think of is this stupid engagement? What’s wrong with you?"

"Don’t talk to me like that. I’m just being reasonable. Tara has always been a naughty child. She obviously got that from her mother. And besides, she’s just a little child. I’m sure she wouldn’t have gone that far. Just send George or some men to find her, and they’ll be back with your daughter in less than an hour. Don’t think too much."

Catherine said, but just then, a familiar voice was heard from behind them.

"For a grandmother, you are really wicked."

Vanessa said as she walked into the mansion with Tara in her arms, taking everyone by surprise. Upon seeing his daughter, Rowen quickly ran toward them as he took Tara immediately from Vanessa, hugging the little girl tightly.

"Vanessa, you?" Shocked to see Vanessa, Catherine frowned. "I knew you had something to do with this. You must have coerced the little girl to run away, you vixen," Catherine cursed as Vanessa felt like laughing.

Facing Rowen, she voiced, "Do you really care about Tara as you say you do? If you did, then tell me, how could a little child leave your sight and run away? With all the maids and guards, none of you were able to stop her? Is this how neglected my daughter is treated when I’m not here?"

Vanessa’s tone wasn’t kind at all. Sighing, Rowen said, "Thank you for bringing her back, and you’re right. I neglected Tara. From now on, I won’t let her leave my sight again."

Nodding, Vanessa flashed a slight glance at Rachel, who wasn’t happy to see her at all. Facing Tara, Vanessa said, "Mama has to go now, baby. See you soon, and don’t run away again, alright?" 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

Saying that, Vanessa turned around to leave, only to stop in her tracks at what she heard next.

"I won’t marry, Rachel."
