Chapter 49: Chapter 49

"I won’t marry Rachel."

Rowen’s voice echoed through the entire living room as everyone looked shocked and taken aback.

Turning around, Vanessa faced him, also surprised by his words but her expression remaining stiff.

Facing Tara, Rowen said once more, "If marrying Rachel would make little Tara want to run away, then Papa won’t marry her anymore, okay?"

Hearing his words, Tara nodded happily, while Catherine and Rachel’s faces immediately turned tragic as catherine stepped forward.

"W-what do you mean, Rowen? You can’t just call off the engagement all of a sudden. That’s impossible!" Catherine voiced, obviously not happy with Rowen’s decision, but he could care less.

Just then, Vanessa walked toward him, taking Tara from him as she placed her on the ground. Bending down to the girl’s height, Vanessa asked, "Tara, do you love and care about Papa?"

Tara nodded softly.

"Then you must let him do whatever makes him happy. He has always done everything he could to make you happy. Now it’s time for you to do the same. If he really wants to marry Rachel, then don’t stop him. Promise me?" Vanessa said as she brought out her pinky finger. Hesitating, Tara finally crossed her finger with Vanessa’s, promising her not to stop Rowen from marrying Rachel.

With that, Vanessa stood up straight and walked toward Rowen. Her eyes were fixed on him as he stared back, unable to tell what she was thinking.

"Don’t deceive yourself, Rowen. You think marrying Rachel will hurt me? You would only be hurting yourself and our daughter. You know why? Because you love me, Rowen. And no amount of hatred or marriages will ever change that. I know deep down you know what’s right. If only you followed your heart."

And with that, Vanessa turned around and left, leaving everyone speechless and without words.

Turning to her mother, Mariam asked, "Mother, is the engagement still on?"

Glaring at her, Catherine voiced, "Of course it is. That wicked vixen can’t stop it. My son will marry Rachel, so go make sure Vivian is getting the food set. The guests will arrive soon." Catherine instructed as Mariam just nodded and left.

Meanwhile, Rowen just stood there, lost in his thoughts as he then took Tara in his arms and turned around to leave.

"Your suit is on your bed. Get ready, son!" Catherine shouted, but Rowen didn’t respond.

Seeing all the drama that had just unfolded, George just sighed and followed behind Rowen.

Meanwhile, stepping out of the mansion, Vanessa caught sight of a maid. Calling her attention, the maid answered immediately.

With a smirk plastered across her face, Vanessa said, "I want you to do something for me. Don’t worry, you’ll be heavily paid."

......

Soon, the time for the engagement arrived, and guests came in one by one, each bringing their congratulations. The busiest? Catherine.

She wanted to make sure everything was in place.

In the huge mansion, there was a big hall made exclusively for events like these. As expected, those who were invited were not a small number but a large one, as Catherine wanted to make sure everyone in Graceland knew her son was getting engaged.

Finally, it started, and dressed in a navy blue dress, Rachel styled her brown hair in a nice bun, making her look elegant and innocent, the opposite of who she really was.

Amongst all the decorations, the one that seemed to catch everyone’s eyes was the big television hanging directly at the entrance. It displayed the engagement theme.

Amongst all the guests, Fiona was present, with a mischievous smile plastered across her face. She was only here to watch the drama, and she was more than ready for it.

Some moments later, Rowen finally arrived, dressed in a black suit. His expression was cold and scary for someone about to get engaged, and this only made Fiona laugh even more.

Taking a hold of the mic, Catherine said aloud, "I would like to welcome you all to my son’s engagement ceremony. We all know how he sadly ended his last marriage with his ex-wife, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have the right to find happiness again."

She smiled, facing Rachel, who blushed foolishly. "Today, he will get engaged to Rachel, who is like a daughter to me, and hopefully, we will be planning the wedding soon."

With that said, two maids arrived at the wedding, each holding a golden tray, each covered with a small red fabric.

"Rachel, take the ring and place it on Rowen," she was instructed, and she excitedly did as instructed.

Removing the red fabric revealed a blue box, and upon opening it was a shining diamond engagement ring. Taking hold of it, she stretched her other hand forward to take Rowen’s hand, but he didn’t move an inch.

He just stood there, his mind completely absent as the entire crowd whispered slightly.

For a full two minutes, Rowen kept Rachel waiting, causing her to blush in embarrassment.

"It seems like Mr. Quinn isn’t interested in this marriage."

"I heard it’s because he’s still in love with his first wife... his mother is probably the one forcing this marriage on both of them."

The entire hall was full of whispers and gossip. Having enough, Catherine whispered to Rowen, "What are you waiting for? Give her your hand!"

Hearing that, Rowen still remained unshaken, until he finally brought out his hand, and Rachel immediately placed the ring onto his finger. This action resulted in an awkward and overdue applause from the guests, and even Fiona clapped along.

"Now, Rowen, you will place the ring on Rachel," she was instructed.

Rowen was about to do so, but as he held the ring, he looked around the entire hall, and there was no sign of Vanessa. He wondered if she really wasn’t going to show up to stop the engagement.

Just as he was about to place the ring on Rachel, the huge television in the hall suddenly started to play.
