Chapter 57: Chapter 57

As the officers stepped forward to take Erin, he suddenly shoved one of them hard, sending the man stumbling into a table. The guests gasped. Without warning, Erin lunged at Vanessa, grabbing her by the arm and yanking her in front of him.

"Don’t move!" he shouted, pulling her close, his arm tight around her neck.

The whole room froze.

"Erin, stop!" Linda shouted, her voice cracking.

Fiona stood frozen. Kami stepped forward but stopped when Erin’s glare hit her.

"Try anything," he growled, "and she gets hurt. I’m not kidding."

Vanessa didn’t fight. She knew better. Erin was desperate now worse than she’d ever seen him.

"I want a car waiting outside in ten minutes," Erin said, backing up with her still in his grip. "And I want someone to call my lawyer. You think you can ruin me like this? You think I didn’t plan for something like this?"

"Erin, please," Linda said again, her voice shaking. "Let her go. This isn’t the way."

He barked a dry laugh. "You think I care about the way? I’m not going to prison. Not after everything I’ve built. If anyone should be arrested, it’s your daughter. She’s the one who started all this."

"Shut up," Kami said sharply. "This is your mess." 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Erin looked at her with disgust. "You all think you’re better than me. You stood there smiling, acting like everything was fine while waiting for me to fall. But none of you know what it’s like to have the whole world against you."

"You did that to yourself," Fiona said quietly.

Erin’s jaw clenched. His grip on Vanessa tightened, and she winced.

"I’m not going down alone," he muttered. "You hear me?"

Then, just as the tension hit its peak, the doors to the hall opened.

Rowen stepped inside.

He wasn’t dressed for any event. No tie. No fancy coat. Just a plain black shirt and dark jeans. But his presence was like a sudden shift in the air quiet but heavy. Every head turned. Even Erin’s.

Rowen didn’t run. He walked slowly, steady, his eyes only on Erin.

"Let her go," he said calmly.

Erin stiffened. "Don’t come closer."

"I won’t," Rowen replied. "Just let her go. You know this won’t end the way you think."

"I don’t care!" Erin snapped. "I’ve lost everything. I’m not going alone. She helped destroy me."

Rowen stopped walking. His voice didn’t rise. "No one destroyed you. You did that on your own."

Erin’s eyes darted around the room, then back to Vanessa. His hand trembled slightly now, but he tried to hide it.

Vanessa felt it though. She could feel how unstable he was, how badly he was losing control.

"You came back for this?" Erin asked Rowen, almost bitter. "After all she did to you?"

Rowen didn’t answer. He just looked at Vanessa. Then back at Erin.

"I’m not here for the past," Rowen said. "I’m here because I don’t want to see her get hurt. Let her go. You still have a chance to walk out with some dignity."

Erin shook his head. "No, no you don’t get to talk like that. You think you’re better than me? You think coming in here makes you a hero?"

"I don’t care what you think I am," Rowen said. "All I care about is her. So I’m giving you one chance."

There was a pause. Erin’s grip loosened just a bit.

That was enough.

Rowen moved quickly. In one motion, he stepped forward, grabbed Erin’s wrist and twisted. The knife Erin had pulled from somewhere clattered to the floor. Vanessa stumbled free, gasping. The officers were on Erin in seconds, pinning him down. He fought, yelling, but it was over.

Vanessa stood still, barely processing what just happened.

Linda rushed to her, wrapping her arms around her. Kami was already on the phone with someone, probably making sure the rest of the scene outside was secure. Fiona stood close, her hand gently resting on Vanessa’s back.

Outside the venue, people who had been watching the event live on public screens and phones erupted in cheers. Videos were being shared instantly. Some people didn’t even realize it was real at first it felt like something out of a movie. But this was real.

Inside, Vanessa turned to Rowen. Her hair was messy, makeup slightly smudged. But her eyes were clear.

"You weren’t supposed to be here," she said quietly. "You had business in Willows."

Rowen nodded. "I was halfway there. Then someone showed me the early footage from the news. When I saw the raid and your name mentioned next to his, I turned back."

"You didn’t have to," she said, voice small.

"I know," he replied. "But I didn’t feel right letting it happen without being here."

She looked at him, her chest still rising and falling as her breath tried to settle.

"Why?"

He glanced around, then back at her. "Because I know what it feels like to be left alone when things go bad. You did it to me once. I wasn’t going to do it to you."

She blinked, silent. There was no bitterness in his voice. No anger. Just honesty.

"I don’t want anything from you, Vanessa," he added. "I just didn’t want him to hurt you."

She nodded slowly. Her eyes shimmered, but she didn’t cry.

The room started to settle again. Officers walked out with Erin, still shouting about lies and betrayal. The guests remained quiet, unsure whether to stay or leave.

But Vanessa didn’t notice any of that.

She just stood there, looking at Rowen. The man she had once left behind. The one person who still came back when everything fell apart.

For the first time in a long time, she didn’t feel like she was falling anymore.

Not because someone saved her.

But because someone showed her she was still worth saving.

Soon the whole guest was sent away as everywhere became silent once more.

They were all taken back home since the wedding dint hold, Hannah on the other hand woke up to find herself in an empty hall as she ran straight to the station to meet her son.
