Chapter 71: Chilli Soup 2

Vanessa stared at the sleeping Tara as she checked the small girl’s temperature. The small girl wrapped herself with the small pink duvet, making her look like a small ball.

She seemed alright, but Stacy was right. Tara was a small child. She would need something to keep her body warm, especially during this cold weather.

Standing up, she made her way to the kitchen. She checked the kitchen cabinets, but almost all the ingredients were empty.

"Someone," she called out, annoyed at what she was seeing.

Just then, a pale-skinned maid walked into the kitchen as Vanessa questioned her, "What’s going on here? Why are the ingredients and groceries empty? Aren’t they supposed to be restocked? What’s the meaning of this?"

Shaking slightly, the maid responded, "We are very sorry, ma’am. Because of the rain yesterday, we couldn’t get the ingredients, so Head Maid Vivian went along with some maids to the main market today to get the groceries... they will be back soon."

The maid explained as Vanessa just sighed and looked around the kitchen one more time. Just when she was about to give up, her eyes caught a small basket tucked into the corner of the bottom shelf.

Inside, she found a few fresh peppers, onions, garlic, a little chicken stock, and a sealed pouch of turmeric powder.

She smiled.

"Turmeric chili soup... that’ll warm her up."

Without wasting time, she got to work. She sliced the peppers and onions, crushed the garlic, and set a small pot on the stove.

She added oil, let the onions and garlic fry for a few seconds, then tossed in the peppers. The smell filled the kitchen, warm, spicy, and comforting. She stirred in the turmeric and added the chicken stock, letting everything simmer gently.

When it was ready, she poured the soup into a pink cup and carried it upstairs.

Tara was still curled up under her blanket, but her eyes fluttered open when Vanessa stepped in.

"Mommy?" she mumbled sleepily. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

Vanessa sat beside her on the bed and helped her sit up slowly.

"I made something for you. It’s hot soup, it’ll help you feel warm."

Tara took the cup with her small hands and blew gently on the surface before taking a sip. Her eyes lit up.

"Mmm... it’s nice."

"You like it?" Vanessa smiled, brushing Tara’s hair back.

Tara nodded and leaned into her.

"Thank you, Mommy."

Vanessa kissed her forehead softly.

"Anything for you, baby."

After making sure Tara finished the soup, she tucked her back in and left the room quietly.

Later that night, Vanessa was downstairs in the living room, curled up on the couch with Mariam. The two of them were laughing over an old romantic comedy playing on the TV. Popcorn was everywhere, and Mariam had even painted one of Vanessa’s fingernails as a joke.

Just then, the front door opened.

Rowen stepped in with George behind him, as always. He was tired but still sharp-eyed. He dropped his keys on the table and walked into the room.

"What’s going on here?" he asked, half-smiling as he bent down to give Vanessa a soft kiss on the cheek. She blushed slightly but pretended not to care.

"Movie night," Mariam grinned, tossing popcorn at him.

He chuckled softly but then looked around.

"Where’s Tara?"

Before Vanessa could answer, a loud scream came from upstairs it was from a maid.

"Miss Tara! Miss Tara!"

All of them froze.

"I-Is something wrong?" Mariam said, exchanging looks with Vanessa, who immediately jumped up, heart racing, and ran with Rowen and Mariam close behind. They burst into Tara’s room.

The little girl was sweating, breathing hard. Her lips were slightly swollen, and red patches had started to form on her arms. She was crying in her sleep, body trembling.

"Call the doctor!" Rowen barked as he and Vanessa rushed toward Tara, Vanessa’s eyes full of tears. Fear was visible in them.

George took out his phone and immediately called for the doctors as all the maids panicked, each of them worried about Tara and their dear life.

They knew what their boss was capable of if anything, absolutely anything, happened or was wrong with Tara, he would literally tear the entire house down.

Moments later, the doctor arrived and checked her quickly.

"It’s an allergic reaction," he said, checking her pulse again.

"Allergic reaction?" Rowen asked, confused.

"But Tara is only allergic to turmeric and nothing else!" Mariam revealed, leaving Vanessa absolutely shocked and taken aback. It was as though, at that point, her heart stopped.

"She’s reacting to the turmeric. It’s serious, but we caught it early. She’ll be fine with the treatment."

Vanessa stood frozen at the door, her hands trembling.

Turmeric?

Her mind ran back to the soup. The yellow powder. The warm scent. The smile on Tara’s face.

Her heart sank.

She had no idea Tara was allergic to turmeric. She was literally blaming herself at that moment.

Soon the doctor gave Tara some treatments, and the girl’s temperature reduced as she slept off comfortably.

"Here are some prescriptions. She should be given this every morning and night. Not one day should be missed. She’s a little child, so her immune system is not that strong compared to us adults. Make sure she is well taken care of."

And with that, the doctor left as George escorted him out.

With Tara asleep, Rowen bent down and stroked her hair softly as he kissed her on the forehead, whispering some words to her only he could make out.

Standing up, he walked straight toward the living room as Vanessa and Mariam followed behind him.

His entire temperament had changed at this moment. He was angry, his eyes and expression were literally showing it.

Shouting, he announced,

"I want everyone in the mansion, all the maids and servants, to come here immediately... you all will explain to me how the hell my daughter was given turmeric. Tell me?!"

He shouted as the maids all trembled. Meanwhile, Vanessa just held Mariam’s hand, her mind literally racing at the moment.

But just then, the voice of someone was heard.

"You should be asking your dear wife that question, Rowen!"
