Chapter 188: Uncle Carlos is there anything wrong with Grandpa?
The Luther Family Residence.
"Enough about that troublesome boy," Grandpa Luther set down his teacup with a sigh, his gaze drifting toward Carrie Ann, who was happily steering a remote-controlled car nearby.
"Camilla," he called out, his aged yet profound eyes brimming with affectionate warmth.
"Don’t you think Carrie Ann is absolutely adorable?"
Camilla followed his line of sight and nodded, her smile genuine.
"Absolutely precious."
A knowing smirk tugged at Uncle Carlos’s lips.
The Ms. Camilla clearly hadn’t caught the underlying motive in grandpa’s words.
Sensing their attention, Carrie Ann turned her head and beamed at them, her sweet grin lighting up the room.
"With this little one around, even this old house feels livelier," Grandpa Luther mused, exhaling deeply. "What a shame she’s not really ours.
We’ll have to give her back when her family comes looking," he sighed, pushing the peanuts and candied dates toward Camilla before taking a sip of tea.
"If only our Luther Family could have such an adorable little one someday."
Peanuts.
Candied dates.
Camilla glanced at the treats nudged her way, then at Carie Ann, and couldn’t help but chuckle.
Grandpa’s way of hinting about grandchildren was certainly... creative.
"Don’t worry," she said, slowly shelling a peanut before popping it into her mouth.
"Sinclair and I are already planning for a baby.
You’ll be holding your great-grandchild soon."
As a doctor, she didn’t find such topics as awkward as other women might.
"Hahaha!
That’s wonderful, just wonderful!"
Grandpa’s earlier melancholy vanished instantly, his laughter deepening the creases around his eyes.
"Better yet—have twins!
A boy like Sinclair, and a girl like you."
His eyes sparkled with affection, though he paused thoughtfully mid-sentence.
"Forget it, better they all take after you.
That brat Sinclair is too much of a handful.
At least my old bones are still sturdy—I can help raise the kid for a few years after they’re born."
This was the greatest hope Grandpa Luther clung to these days.
Hearing this, Uncle Carlos suddenly recalled the old man’s inexplicably frail health lately.
The smile faded from his face, replaced by a shadow of concern.
Since Ms. Camilla was here, he had to find a way to get her to examine grandpa.
"A few years won’t be enough," Camilla chimed in softly, playing along with the old man’s words.
"With your constitution, you ought to help us raise the child all the way to adulthood."
She set down what she was holding, picked up a handkerchief, and meticulously wiped her fingers clean.
"Since I’m here, let me check your pulse again and see how you’ve been doing lately." ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com
"You’re here to visit your grandpa, not to work," Grandpa Luther waved her off, reluctant to trouble her.
"Besides, it’s only been half a month since the last checkup. What could possibly be wrong?"
"Sir, when it comes to health, you can never check too often,"
Uncle Carlos interjected before Camilla could respond, chuckling lightly.
"And since Ms. Camilla has already offered, if you refuse, she won’t rest easy either."
He turned his gaze to Camilla.
"I’ll go fetch the pulse pillow for you right away."
With that, he turned and strode out briskly.
Grandpa Luther shook his head helplessly, a chuckle escaping his lips.
"Seems even more eager than I am."
Camilla watched Uncle Carlos’s retreating figure, her beautiful eyes narrowing slightly, though the smile on her face remained unchanged.
"Uncle Carlos cares deeply for you."
Grandpa Luther nodded in agreement.
Uncle Carlos soon returned with the pulse pillow.
Camilla gently placed Grandpa Luther’s wrist on the pillow, her gaze lingering deliberately on the jade beads of the agarwood bracelet.
The jade beads on the bracelet remained as translucent as before, showing no visible changes.
Camilla exhaled a quiet sigh of relief before focusing intently on taking the pulse.
Uncle Carlos stood silently nearby, his eyes clouded with faint concern.
Grandpa Luther, on the other hand, appeared completely unperturbed, clearly convinced there was nothing wrong with his health.
Aside from some deficiency in qi and blood, everything seemed normal.
Camilla released his wrist and moved to check the meridians on the old man’s other hand.
Still, nothing seemed amiss.
Noticing her prolonged silence, Uncle Carlos was the first to speak up.
"Young Madam, what’s the verdict?"
Grandpa Luther also fixed his gaze on Camilla.
She withdrew her hand, a reassuring smile curving her lips.
"Just a slight depletion of blood. Otherwise, everything’s fine."
"See, I told you so," Grandpa Luther retorted as he pulled his hand back, glancing between Camilla and Uncle Carlos.
"Now you can rest assured."
"Uncle Carlos," Camilla smiled and nodded, turning to face the elderly steward.
"Where’s the medicinal diet recipe I prescribed for Grandpa earlier?
I need to make a few adjustments."
"It’s safely stored in my quarters.
I’ll fetch it for you right away,"
Uncle Carlos replied earnestly.
"No need," Camilla said calmly.
"I’ll come with you."
"There are several crucial details that require careful explanation."
As she spoke, she turned to Grandpa Luther with a warm smile.
"Grandpa, please keep Carie Ann company here.
We’ll be back shortly."
"You thoughtful child," grandpa murmured, deeply touched by her concern for his health as he nodded in understanding.
Camilla followed Uncle Carlos through the moon gate, their footsteps echoing across the polished wooden floors of the main hall.
"Please wait here," Uncle Carlos said, gesturing to an antique rosewood chair.
"I’ll retrieve the recipe immediately."
"No need to modify the prescription,"
The smile had faded from Camilla’s face.
"Uncle Carlos, has Grandpa been showing any unusual symptoms lately?"
She’d clearly noticed the concern in Uncle Carlos’s eyes back in the courtyard.
Only because her pulse diagnosis revealed nothing amiss had she refrained from asking directly.
Madam truly missed nothing.
"Grandpa’s appetite has been poor these days,"
Uncle Carlos replied after a brief pause, his voice grave.
"He coughs incessantly at night, complains of body aches, and suffers from persistent dizziness."
He hesitated before adding,
"But strangely, these symptoms improve significantly by midday—unless he loses his temper."
A weighted silence followed.
"Ms Camilla," he finally continued, "are you absolutely certain grandpa’s pulse shows no irregularities?"
His tone carried no accusation, only deep unease at the abnormality.
"I’m certain his pulse is normal," Camilla said, her delicate brows knitting together.
"But given these symptoms, that shouldn’t be the case." Her clear voice turned icy.
"When things defy reason, there’s always a hidden evil at work."
"Has Grandpa been anywhere unusual recently? Or eaten anything out of the ordinary?"
"Grandpa hasn’t left the estate except to visit you and boss Sinclair at the manor," replied Uncle Carlos after a moment of careful thought, shaking his head.
"As for his meals, they’ve been the same as usual."
Camilla fell silent for a while before speaking slowly.
"I’ll look into this condition more thoroughly when I get back. In the meantime, Uncle Carlos, I’d appreciate it if you could keep a close watch on things here at the estate."
She paused, then added, "Especially anyone who has access to Grandpa’s daily needs—food, clothing, and living arrangements."
Uncle Carlos’s brow furrowed deeply.
"You suspect someone might be..."
"Pulse readings can sometimes be misleading.
Grandpa wouldn’t just fall ill without reason," Camilla said gravely.
"It’s better to be cautious."
"Understood," Uncle Carlos replied with a solemn nod.
"Don’t worry about it."
