Chapter 156: Chapter 156

"David, can you explain to me in detail what is actually going on? A few weeks ago, the minister for war reported sightings of rebel soldiers. I had thought it was just a rumor, but you’re saying your third brother is behind this?" The emperor asked, his gaze skeptical.

David saw his father’s face full of disbelief and inwardly scoffed; his father always acted like he was his favorite, but look at him now. His gaze shows he still cares deeply about his 3rd brother.

"I’m sorry to disappoint you, Father, but even I couldn’t believe it. That’s why I decided to go and see the 3rd brother first, but before I could even get to him, the rebel soldiers attacked me at the borders of the Southern region. I showed them my identity tag and told them I was the 2nd Prince, which made them even angrier and bloodthirsty; they tried to kill me; I had barely managed to get out of there with my life intact," David Narrated.

"Aww, son, you have suffered. I’ve always told you to stop treating the sons of those witches as your brothers, but you won’t listen..."

"Mother!"

"Noble Consort!"

Second Prince David and the emperor both exclaimed at the same time, their gazes full of displeasure. The emperor was genuinely disappointed at how blunt his Noble Consort’s words were, but David, on the other hand, was just feigning it.

He was thankful his mother was present to help fan the flames so that his father would be forced to take drastic actions.

"What? Am I not telling the truth? Those vipers had nearly killed my son because of the throne, knowing fully well they are not qualified to be the next emperor," Noble Consort Margaret added unrepentantly.

It was only the third prince who was supposed to be the culprit who attacked her son but she was intentionally making it sound as if Nicholas was part, putting all of them together in one basket.

"Stop talking, or you will return to your palace first," The emperor warned his noble consort.

Consort Margaret felt the emperor was treating her unjustly but she could only clamp her mouth shut because she didn’t want to anger the emperor.

"What is the current situation on the ground in the Southern region? Were you able to gather any information? Did the rebels say the third prince is behind their rebellion?" the emperor asked.

"Yes, Your Majesty, I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it is just as I said: my 3rd brother is behind the rebellion, and he wants the throne for himself."

"Father, every second we waste could be dire for our people, and I would like to suggest you send my eldest brother to quell the rebellion. We know with him leading our soldiers, victory would soon be ours. He can also capture the third prince and bring him to us here alive so that you can interrogate him yourself," David concluded.

The emperor heaved a heavy sigh at David’s words. They were the truth and that time was indeed of the essence.

"The second prince has indeed thought of everything well. Focus on recuperating. I’ll make sure no harm comes to our people," the emperor said with a heavy heart.

He didn’t think his third son, who was more reserved than all his sons and hardly spoke, would rebel against him for the throne. How did things go so wrong?

It’s been about six years since he last saw his third son but on the day of their reunion, they are going to meet as an emperor and a traitor. No matter how he saw it, this was an act of treason,’ he thought.

The emperor turned to leave with Noble Consort Margaret choosing to stay behind and spending time with her son. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

"Summon the Minister for war, minister for defense, and the eldest prince to the main palace immediately," the emperor said to his eunuch as soon as he stepped out of the second prince’s estate.

"Yes, right away, Your Majesty," the eunuch bowed and ran off to carry out the instructions.

Physician Philip, the new imperial physician, was surprised that the eldest Prince’s Consort had summoned him. He had never had any prior meetings with the woman before, so as he followed the maid, his heart couldn’t help but drum in his chest.

"Good Evening, My Lady," Physician Philip greeted as soon as he saw Lady Evelyn in her drawing room.

"I heard that the new physician was the top student of the RRoyal Academy of Medicine for this year. Congratulations on becoming an imperial physician," Lady Evelyn said and the man respectfully bowed, surprised that his name was already known among the people in the palace.

"Thank you, my Lady," Physician Philip said in a modest tone.

"I also heard you came from a very poor family and due to your father being a corrupt official some years ago, your mother and sister were stripped of their nobility status and were reduced to slaves. Now tell me, how come your records still show you are a noble? Do you know lying to the emperor is a crime akin to treason?" Lady Evelyn said in a leisurely tone and inwardly smirked seeing how pale the physician had become.

"M—My Lady, please save me; I didn’t mean to deceive the emperor; I deserve to die," he said and hurriedly kneeled on the ground.

Luciana smiled knowing she now had this physician in the palm of her hand. He was exactly where she wanted him to be.

On the day of the empress dowager’s birthday, after she had been told to return to her quarters, she had run into some government officials and heard them talking in whispers about how the new physician resembled a former traitor.

She had just listened to the conversation absentmindedly as she planned how to get back at the princess consort in her mind.

Evelyn had just wanted to test the waters but didn’t know the new imperial physician was really the same person the ministers were talking about.

’What an amazing discovery!?"

"I don’t need your life; I need you alive for something important, and if you do what I ask you to do well, everything I know will be swept underneath the rug. I’ll never talk about it. Again. What do you say?"
