Chapter 18: Grave of Balthazar Ralph Ignaz Pt.1

As Raven shimmered into existence in front of the dungeon, or rather, the grave of his not-so-revered ancestor, he could not help but let out a surprised shriek.

He was facing a giant ugly black boulder with a small jagged crack halfway through its middle, nothing else.

No fancy cave openings, no simmering portals beckoning adventures to another world.

Just one plain cracked boulder in front of him amidst a grove of oak and birch, plain and unassuming.

Concerned, he reached out to the system. "Where's the dungeon?"

[Right in front of you, host. Place your palm on the crack of the boulder and you would be inside Balthazar Ralph Ignaz's Grave]

"Huh?" stammered out a dumbfounded Raven.

If that was the dungeon, then why on earth was he unable to sense it with his maxed out perception and luck stats?

The system's stoic voice cut through his incredulity.

[The host cannot locate the dungeon's presence in accordance to the WILL of the dungeon owner's soul, that is Balthazar Ralph Ignaz.

Balthazar Ralph Ignaz's last wish after being thoroughly destroyed by the mother tree was that nobody, not even his descendants, would get their hands on his treasures, and he squeezed out every last drop of his power to make his wish come true.

Forget yourself host, even the Mother Tree isn't aware of the existence of this dungeon, even though it is inside her domain, that is the Demantoid Wilderness.]

"The how the heck did you sense it?" asked an incredulous Raven.

[I simply overrode Balthazar Ralph Ignaz's WILL, host]

So was the system's smug reply.

Raven wisely understood that any further question would only serve the purpose of fuelling the system's already bloated ego, something he did not want to see happening, thus he refrained from satiating his hunger for answers.

Instead he placed his palm on the crack, as per the system's instructions, and found himself stumbling into a narrow, dark corridor.

The putrid stench of blood, grime and rotting carcasses hung in the damp, dank air.

If not for his maxed out endurance stats, Raven would surely have puked out whatever he had been forced to consume in his rice ceremony from this violent assault on his nostrils.

( Rice ceremony is the event hosted when a newborn takes solid food for the first time )

But even with his maxed out endurance stats, Raven could not stop his face from involuntarily scrunching up due to the acrid odour.

But Raven kept moving ahead with small, deliberate steps through this disgusting smell, his senses on high alert against unknown attackers or dangerous but unassuming traps.

Suddenly he stilled to a halt.

In front of him lay a fork in the path, the narrow corridor diverging into two spacious hallways.

Uninhibited killing intent poured out from either of the hallways.

In front of the wall setting the two hallways apart, there was a stone slab with unknown characters etched on it.

Surprisingly, there was not a speck of dust or grime on the stone slab, as if someone cleans it regularly.

The symbols etched on the slab were peculiar, something Raven had never encountered before.

As he stood in front of it, his brain working on the overdrive to figure out a solution, his ever loyal system interfered, rescuing him out of his spot of bother.

Instantly, those unnaturally crooked symbols all made sense, and Raven saw the following words written in clear English.

Either do it, or die trying...

Raven could not understand the context behind such a cryptic remark.

Suddenly, he heard a deafening crash from behind him.

Whirling around on his heels, he saw exactly what he had feared.

The ceiling of that narrow corridor had caved in, completely cutting him off from the dungeon's exit.

He was trapped!

He had to do go inside one, or maybe both of the hallways.

He had to do it, or die trying.

There was no other way.

The cryptic remark on the stone slab made plenty of sense to him now.
