Chapter 115: Sector (4)

Qingran ignored Lingquan’s knowing tone, turning her gaze toward the window. Below them, the lights of Guyoung flickered like dying stars, some already swallowed by smoke.

The buildings looked intact from above, but she knew better, decay always started beneath the surface.

Feng Yizhou must’ve sensed the shift in her thoughts because he didn’t push. He simply sat there, hand warm in hers, thumb idly stroking her knuckle like he wasn’t trying to memorize the feeling.

"What are you thinking about?" He asked, he understood she must be feeling a lot of pressure as the apocalypse was upon them.

"I’m going to check out the labs later when it’s dark, gather as much intel as I can.."

Feng Yizhou nodded, that was a reasonable thought, the capital was basically empty by now, but on lockdown so the zombies couldn’t go into the other towns but he knew that was impossible. They’d find their way everywhere.

"Alright. It’s heavily guarded so I’ll accompany you.."

"Very well. Let’s do our best to finish up and leave here.." Qingran managed to mutter as she tried to pry her hands but Feng Yizhou just wouldn’t bulge.

"Geez...you’re so fucking persistent.."

Feng Yizhou raised a brow and slowly removed his hand, Qingran feeling the sudden cold, held their hands back together.

"What now?"

"I wasn’t complaining, you’re so dramatic.."

Feng Yizhou chuckled and smiled, alright this was good progress.

"Noted," he said, his voice low with amusement. "So next time, I’ll just take your complaints as encouragement."

Qingran rolled her eyes, but didn’t let go. She didn’t say it aloud, but the warmth helped. With the capital looming below them like a broken promise, she’d take whatever comfort she could get.

Haoyu who was settled behind them, sighed arms crossed and a blanket draped over his lap, glancing up and muttered under his breath, "I swear, I’ll jump out this damn plane"

[Do it,] Lotus offered cheerfully, tail flicking. [I’ll watch.]

Haoyu sighed dramatically and turned away, clearly done with both human and non-human commentary.

The intercom crackled softly, and the pilot’s voice filtered through. "Approaching the capital airspace. Five minutes until touchdown. Brace for turbulence."

Qingran removed her hand, and Feng Yizhou didn’t resist this time. It was time to get serious.

"Yizhou, the safe house..what kind of access does it have?"

"It belong to me, it has all the access plus security. Haoyu will be safe if he stays there. I have about 30 men guarding the safe house. So don’t worry."

She nodded, expression unreadable, but a flicker of relief passed through her eyes.

The plane dipped lower now, rattling just slightly as they began descent.

Through the window, the city’s scars were clearer, smoke rising in slow, choked plumes, and military trucks stranded at intersections like toys forgotten mid-play.

The heart of the capital beat faintly, but it hadn’t flatlined. Not yet.

[Be careful, Qingran] Lingquan warned, settling beside her with unusual solemnity.

"Got it. I’ll be careful.."

The landing was rougher than expected. Not enough to jolt panic into anyone seasoned, but enough for Qingran’s fingers to brace against the seat edge as the aircraft thudded onto the private airstrip just outside the capital’s east sector.

The runway lights were dim, flickering like they hadn’t been maintained in weeks.

No people. No military checkpoint. Just the cool wind of dusk, the faint scent of burnt metal, and the distant groan of a siren swallowed by smoke.

Feng Yizhou stood first, already in motion. "Vehicles are waiting beyond the hangar. We head straight to the safe house. Once we drop Haoyu off, you and I move out."

Qingran nodded. That was the plan. Haoyu would stay behind—away from the labs, the chaos, and the growing contamination.

Yizhou’s people were competent, and thirty of them were stationed at the safe house, more than enough for protection.

"Yes but let’s wait until night time.."

Haoyu followed quietly. His usual sarcasm muted by the shifting air.

The weight of a dying city settled over them as they moved through the hangar toward the armored vehicles.

The convoy was low-profile, two black SUVs with shielded windows and unmarked plates.

Yizhou’s men were sharp-eyed and silent, they took the wheels.

None of them bothering to talk.

Qingran sat in the front passenger seat of the lead vehicle, Feng Yizhou directly behind her.

As they drove into the capital, she stared out at streets stripped of life. Empty buses, flickering billboards, a toppled streetlamp, and cracked pavement painted in soot. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

"Containment broke in Sector Four," Feng Yizhou said. "West sectors are overrun. Whatever’s left in the center is either hiding or infected."

Qingran’s gaze hardened. "Then we can’t waste anymore time."

By the time they reached the high-rise that housed the safe house, the sun had dipped behind a wall of haze.

The building was fortified, steel reinforcements across entry points, security systems active, guards stationed at every exit.

Inside, Haoyu was given a comms device and the code to the lockdown protocol.

"You’re staying here," Qingran reminded him. "Keep a low profile, check for movement on the outer cams every hour. Though I’m sure Feng Yizhou’s men can do that but just to keep yourself busy."

Haoyu nodded, finally serious. "I’ll hold the fort. Just don’t go dying out there."

Feng Yizhou clasped Haoyu’s shoulder once, then turned back to Qingran. "I have some things to handle before we head out. That guy over there would show your to your rooms. Although you’ll be sleeping with me, but I’ll still let you have a room of your own."

".."

"Don’t get ahead of yourself."

"..."

Feng Yizhou nodded and beaconed to the man in black to show them to their room.

As he headed out of the room, 5 to 6 men accompanying him out. He turned slightly, staring at Qingran for a bit "If anything happens. Be sure to contact me, your safety is my priority. Got it?"

Qingran nodded, after all she wouldn’t deliberately put herself in danger.
