Chapter 114: Eyes never lie

Qingran blinked, caught off-guard by the sudden softness in his tone. It wasn’t like he hadn’t flirted before.

Feng Yizhou was nothing if not relentless when it came to expressing his feelings, but this was different.

Quieter. No sly grin, no teasing lilt. Just sincerity.

Her fingers twitched in his grip, but she didn’t pull away. "You’re serious?"

He nodded, thumb brushing lightly over the back of her hand. "I thought I was going to lose contact with you for a moment." His voice dipped lower. "I know you’re strong. You’ve always been. But I still worry, you always find yourself in the eye of the storm."

Qingran ears reddened as she pulled away, not because of what Feng Yizhou said but the way he looked at her.

Eyes never lie.

"Anyways I’ve got a secured place in the capital. If you want to go out, you tell me I’ll come with you. Unlike Chengdu, the capital is experiencing both zombies and bio hazards. Most of the citizens are being evacuated.."

"Evacuated?" Haoyu leaned forward, frowning. "So they’re finally admitting something’s wrong?"

Feng Yizhou shook his head. "Not exactly. They’re calling it a ’containment protocol’—a staged citywide drill. The news says it’s due to a gas leak and rising chemical threats. But underground, it’s chaos. People are disappearing. Some of the soldiers stationed there haven’t been seen for days. And the ones who come back..."

He didn’t finish that sentence, but he didn’t need to. Qingran had seen what was left of containment breaches before.

Twisted bodies, half-human, half-something else. Flesh blooming with spores or etched with the wrong kind of hunger.

Not dead. Not alive. All manners of things that made one stomach turn appeared after the contamination.

She exhaled slowly. "So we have to assume it’s already spreading through the water lines and ventilation systems."

Feng Yizhou gave a grim nod. "Exactly. We don’t know how much time the city has, but I give it two days before the center falls. Four at most for outer sectors."

[Charming,] Lotus muttered dryly. [I do love a good ticking clock. It really helps with the ambiance.]

[Focus, furball,] Lingquan said, leaping onto the edge of the seat with silent grace. [The capital isn’t just a hotspot, it’s a nest. If the lab data is anywhere, it’s there.]

"Alright, this means we can’t stay long in the capital since it’s getting contaminated at a fast rate. That thing we saw coming to Xi’an, we don’t know when or where it’s going to pop up."

"Yeah but I have a mission in the capital, I can’t leave yet.." Feng Yizhou sighed, finding the elite team was much harder than he thought.

"What kind of mission.."

Feng Yizhou sighed, a mission that look easy but now insanely difficult.

It looked like the elite team had disappeared off the face off the earth and he had nothing to track them with.

"Darling...how about a kiss? It will soothe my nerves.."

Feng Yizhou smiled, of course now that Qingran was here, he could concentrate, he was more worried with her being away from him, he would rather they be in the eye of the storm together.

At least they could see each other there ans he could protect her.

"How about a punch? I know it will soothe my nerves.."

Feng Yizhou chuckled, she always returned his advances with such aggression.

"If that’s what you want. You can punch me as many times as you want, that means you’re willing to touch me.."

"..."

Qingran couldn’t help but chuckle a bit with how shameless Feng Yizhou was being.

She realized that, their time apart she had missed his presence.

Not that she was going to tell him, it would make him think he had a chance.

"Ahem. I don’t know if y’all have forgotten. But they’re still 3 more people in this aircraft, STOP! Feeding us dog food.."

Feng Yizhou didn’t even flinch at Haoyu’s protest. In fact, he looked pleased. "Ah, I see. You’re jealous."

Haoyu groaned, dragging a hand down his face. "Of the flirting? No. Of the shamelessness? Maybe. I just didn’t expect a soap opera in the middle of a stealth flight over a biohazard zone."

Qingran bit back a smile, only for her thoughts to be interrupted by a dry voice curling in her mind like incense smoke.

[He’s not wrong. You’re supplying enough dog food to feed a kennel.]

She didn’t even look at Lingquan, who had slinked into the shadows behind her seat like a silent guardian.

"Okay, back to the point," she said aloud. "Yizhou, what’s your mission?"

Feng Yizhou’s smile dimmed just slightly, seriousness overtaking the glint in his eyes.

"To track a member of the elite team here in Guyoung. But it’s seems as though they don’t exist.."

Qingran blinked, their missions were almost alike, here was to find out why elite team started the apocalypse, his was to find one of them.

If she could help him find the member, she could find out why from the direct source.

"Mhm.." leaning closer she whispered into his ears.

"My mission is to find out why the elite team started the apocalypse. I believe we can work together on this.."

Feng Yizhou patted her hand "Even if our missions weren’t alike, I would still help you out with yours.."

".."

"Geez stop being cheesy."

Feng Yizhou chuckled as he intertwined their hands together, knowing she would resist. Which she did but he still kept their hands together.

"Let me, just for a little while.."

Qingran sighed, she didn’t want to admit, Feng Yizhou was getting under her skin more than she liked it but at the same time she couldn’t refuse him.

[Just admit you like him. If it was another person, you would never let them hold your hands this way.]

".."

"I don’t like him, we’re just partners."

Lingquan sighed, women..it always took them time to wrap their head around something.

[Very well. If you insist on that. The capital is very dangerous right now, you must avoid getting contaminated.]
