Chapter 189: I never meant to become anyone’s hope

Qingran said, she had calmly accepted her fate that day and closed the door back without protest.

Not many people could do that.

"It was just hope, hope that you’ll have a change of heart and save me too." the nurse whispered, her hands moving to check the IV drip next.

"And truly..I got lucky.."

There was silence for a moment. Only the quiet sounds of medical equipment and the rhythm of Qingran’s breathing.

She adjusted the sheets around her gently, tucking them with care.

"I couldn’t find it in myself to leave you back there." Qingran mummured, if though she wanted too.

"I’m glad you didn’t. At least I get to repay the favor and take care of you."

The nurse smiled faintly, the kind of smile that carried weight it wasn’t bright, but it was steady. "That’s more than enough for me."

Qingran’s eyes stayed half-lidded, her breathing shallow. She looked like someone too tired to fight anymore, yet too stubborn to fully rest. The nurse noticed it, how her fingers twitched every now and then like she was still on edge, still ready to move if something went wrong. frёeωebɳovel.com

"You don’t have to keep bracing yourself," the nurse said softly, reaching for a folded towel on the tray nearby. She soaked it in warm water, then gently wiped Qingran’s hands one by one. "There’s no danger here."

"I know.." Qingran murmured, but her voice held the same tension. "It’s just hard to switch off."

"I can tell. But I’ll stay until you can. Okay?"

Qingran gave the barest nod.

The nurse finished cleaning her hands, then set the cloth aside and gently massaged Qingran’s knuckles. Her touch was firm but slow, grounding somehow. "Do you want to know something strange?"

Qingran didn’t answer, but her eyelids fluttered slightly in curiosity.

"That day in the hospital," the nurse continued, voice quieter now, "when I realized I wasn’t going to be chosen, I felt relief. Just for a second. Like maybe the waiting was finally over, maybe I would nsit die there without turning into one of those things. And then..."

"And then I came back for you," Qingran finished for her.

The nurse nodded. "You looked exhausted. Covered in blood. Your eyes were so focused. I thought maybe you were seeing a ghost."

"Haha.." Qingran chuckled. "This body isn’t made of iron, I get tired mentally."

The nurse looked down at her hands. "Do you regret it?"

Qingran took a long breath. "No. But I resent me for breaking my rule."

The nurse didn’t flinch. She nodded, accepting it without protest.

"I would’ve understood if you didn’t come," she said. "But you did. And it changed everything for me."

The room fell into another pocket of silence, this one softer than the last.

"I didn’t know your name.." Qingran said quietly.

"It’s Liu Yiran.." the nurse replied. "I was on the night shift when the outbreak started. Didn’t have time to run. I kept thinking, if I could just keep a few patients stable, someone would come..."

Qingran opened her eyes slightly to look at her. "And someone did."

Liu Yiran nodded "Eventually, too think I had hope the government would save us. Now I realize I was naive, they don’t give a damn about us."

Qingran didn’t respond right away. Her gaze drifted up to the ceiling, tracing the faint cracks in the plaster, the silent weight of Yiran’s words settling over them both.

"You weren’t naive, I believed in them once but I knew I was the only one who could save myself" she said eventually, her voice low. "You just still believed in something most people had already given up on."

Yiran gave a soft laugh, it was bitter at the edges. "Belief doesn’t feed you. Doesn’t guard the door at night or stop someone from turning in their sleep and tearing your throat out."

"No" Qingran agreed quietly. "But it kept you alive. Just long enough for me to rescue you."

"And for that.." Yiran murmured, reaching out to adjust the blanket over Qingran’s legs, "I’ll keep believing in something else now....you."

Qingran’s eyes widened slightly, startled by the blunt sincerity in those words. There was no expectation behind them, no heavy burden, only a quiet kind of faith.

It felt... heavier than any praise or thanks she had received before.

"You don’t need to do that.." she whispered.

"I know. But I want to." Yiran smiled again, this time faint but warm. "Besides, I don’t think you realize how many people here already do."

A paused followed after Yiran said this

"I never meant to become anyone’s hope," Qingran said after a moment.

"Too late.." Yiran replied gently. "You already are."

Silence again, but this time it wasn’t uncomfortable. It settled around them like a blanket.

Outside the window, the sky was still dark but it was dead silent, nothing like crickets for alarms.

She wondered what happened to all the animals.

Liu Yiran stood up after a moment, smoothing her hands down the front of her scrubs.

"I’ll go bring some broth.." she said. "You need something warm in you."

"...Thank you.." Qingran murmured.

After Yiran has left, Qingran sat up. She was beginning to feel herself more and more now.

[Dont think you can start playing savior, now that you’ve gotten some feel in your body. You should use your time to recuperate well.]

"..."

Lingquan said as he climbed back on the bed.

"I’m not going to do any manual labor yet but I need to show them the blueprint so they can follow the plans accordingly. I’m going down to give Fang Mokin the blueprints."

["..."]

Lingquan hissed slightly, once she go down she would start working again and he couldn’t allow that.

[You can call Fang Mokin to come here if you want to show the blueprint. But as someone who has worked in a construction site, he knew how to build a small building after see the blueprint once. So have some faith in the people behind you.]
