As soon as the Lian Family’s carriage stopped at the gate, Wu Yugui, Lady Wu Wang, Wu Jiaxing, Lian Zhizhi, and the whole Wu Family were already there to welcome them. This is the main room where Wu Yugui and Lady Wu Wang live, and important guests are always entertained here. When marrying Lian Zhizhi, the Wu Family not only added another courtyard layer but also repainted and renovated this old house. As Lady Wu Wang is exceptionally tidy, the room is impeccably clean and has recently replaced glass windows, making it feel even more spacious and bright.

Everyone entered and took their seats. Lady Wu Wang, Wu Jiayu, and Lian Zhizhi accompanied Lady Zhang and Lian Manman onto the kang, which was covered with felt strips. Wu Jiayu also brought out a brand new lotus-root-colored sitting mat for Lian Manman to sit on. Lian Shouxin, Wu Lang, and Xiao Qi sat on chairs below the kang, with Wu Yugui and Wu Jiaxing sitting beside them.

The two families exchanged greetings, chatting and laughing lively together. The conversation soon turned to Lian Zhizhi’s pregnancy.

"...This child is good in every way, just too shy and cautious," Lady Wu Wang said with a smile. "You should’ve told me earlier so we could have the doctor take a look sooner. Even if it wasn’t anything, it doesn’t matter. Such things can’t be predicted. You two are young, haven’t been through this before, so it’s understandable."

The doctor has already checked Lian Zhizhi’s pulse, and she is about half a month pregnant.

"...Had we known, we could have been happy a few days earlier," Wu Yugui also said.

The Wu Family only has one son, Wu Jiaxing, and his wife getting pregnant so soon is very pleasing to Wu Yugui and Lady Wu Wang. In these times, being fertile is considered a great virtue and important value for a woman.

After some more chatting and laughter, Lady Wu Wang asked Lian Zhizhi to accompany Lady Zhang and Lian Manman to the backyard to sit.

"...People will be arriving soon; it’s quieter in Zhizhi’s room in the backyard, so it’s better for talking. I have things to attend to here, so I won’t be able to accompany you," Lady Wu Wang said with a smile. "Jiayu, accompany your aunt and Manman sister over there."

Because there were many guests to entertain today, Lady Wu Wang had to oversee the kitchen, so she couldn’t stay with Lady Zhang all the time. By suggesting that they go to Lian Zhizhi’s room in the backyard, she was considering their comfort, making it a thoughtful and proper arrangement.

Lady Zhang also wanted to have a good chat with Lian Zhizhi, but she didn’t agree immediately.

"It’s your hosting day, with many things to do, and we can’t help much. It’s better for Zhizhi to stay with you at the front, she might be able to lend a hand... Besides, it’s not right for a daughter-in-law to hide away and enjoy leisure while the mother-in-law is busy at the front," Lady Zhang said with a laugh to Lady Wu Wang.

"Yes, mother, I’ll go watch over the kitchen," Lian Zhizhi added.

"Oh dear," Lady Wu Wang laughed, "we don’t have such old-fashioned rules in our family. Besides, the grandchild is the biggest now. Zhizhi doesn’t need to do anything else; taking care of her health is the greatest filial piety to us."

With Lady Wu Wang having said that, Lady Zhang didn’t decline further.

Lady Zhang, Lian Manman, Lian Zhizhi, and Wu Jiayu left the main house, crossed a corridor, and entered the backyard. Although the Wu Family’s backyard wasn’t as wide as the Lian Family’s, it was exquisitely built, with surrounding walls of trendy floral designs from the town.

The floral walls are built with red bricks, looking ordinary in winter. But come spring and summer, when flowers and plants grow on them, it will become a beautiful sight.
