Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 1608 - 819: Staying for Dinner (2)
Younger Lady Zhou only glanced at Da Niuniu once, then turned her head away and continued talking to Lady Zhou.
Lian Manman noticed that when Younger Lady Zhou looked at Da Niuniu, her gaze was rather sharp.
"Old Fourth, in a while we’ll make dumplings. Your Third Aunt and Third Uncle will eat here. You and the children should stay and eat with us," Old Master Lian said to Lian Shouxin. "Your mother can make the dumpling filling. I still remember you loved eating your mother’s cabbage dumplings when you were young."
"And let your mother cook a few more dishes. Since your Third Uncle is here, we can have a few drinks together," Old Master Lian added with a smile.
While Old Master Lian was speaking, both Lady Zhou and Younger Lady Zhou glanced towards Lian Shouxin.
Lian Manman and Xiao Qi also looked at Lian Shouxin. When they left the house, Lady Zhang had told them to come back early for dinner. Regardless of whether Lian Shouxin stayed or not, the siblings were determined not to stay for dinner. If they stayed, they would definitely have to sit with Lady Zhou. Not being able to eat enough was a small matter; eating while fuming was something they couldn’t stand.
"Dad, unfortunately I have something to do this evening," Lian Shouxin thought for a moment before speaking. "I brought the kids over, apart from delivering the festival treats, we wanted to let you know. Tomorrow, we plan to go to the Prefecture City. There are many things that need to be done during the New Year there."
Upon hearing this from Lian Shouxin, Lady Zhou immediately turned her face away, and a trace of disappointment appeared on Old Master Lian’s face.
However, the disappointment quickly flashed by, and Old Master Lian immediately replaced it with a smile.
"I understand you have a lot on your plate, there’s nothing we can do about it," Old Master Lian said understandingly. "Luckily, your Third Aunt and Third Uncle will be moving to the village in the future. There will be plenty of opportunities to gather, so it’s okay if not this time."
"Yes, official matters are more important. We’re all family, no need to stand on ceremony," Shang Huaide also replied with a smile.
"We’ll eat with Third Aunt and Third Uncle some other time," Lian Shouxin added.
After saying this, Lian Shouxin intended to get up to bid farewell. Old Master Lian seemed reluctant, as if he had more to say but hesitated.
"Second Sister, Second Brother-in-law, we’re going to visit Big Sister’s house once more. I plan to discuss the house matters again," Shang Huaide said, gesturing to Younger Lady Zhou, as the family of four prepared to put on their shoes and get off the kang.
"Tell them to come over for dinner tonight and talk then. What’s the point of wandering around?" Lady Zhou said, trying to stop them.
"It’s alright, we’ll be back soon," Younger Lady Zhou exchanged a glance with Shang Huaide before responding to Lady Zhou, "I’ll go to Big Sister’s house and let her know to come over early, then we can chat more."
The Shang family got off and headed out, with Old Master Lian naturally stepping down to see them off. Even Lady Zhou, who rarely put on shoes, came out to see them off, while Lian Shouxin led Lian Manman and Xiao Qi to accompany them.
"No need to see us off, we’ll be back soon," Shang Huaide repeatedly insisted.
Still, the Lian family accompanied them to the main gate, acknowledging that they were not only distant relatives but rare guests. If they lived in the same village in the future and visits became more frequent, such formalities wouldn’t be necessary.
The Shang family did not take the donkey cart; it was such a short distance that they walked to Wu Yugui’s house.
Lian Shouxin stood at the main gate, intending to bid farewell to Old Master Lian.
"Old Fourth, how long do you plan to stay in the Prefecture City this time?" Old Master Lian asked Lian Shouxin.
"I’ll probably return by the end of the month," Lian Shouxin replied.
"You’ll be gone for quite some time this trip," Old Master Lian said with a hint of reluctance. "If you won’t stay for dinner, at least linger a while longer and chat with Dad."
Though Lian Shouxin initially didn’t intend to agree, upon seeing Old Master Lian, he changed his mind.
The three of them followed Old Master Lian back to the Upper Room.
"Where has the second brother’s family run off to? Knowing their Third Aunt is here, how come they aren’t back yet, waiting till meal time to show up? Black-hearted bastards!" Lady Zhou cursed as she walked into the house. "We were supposed to make dumplings, someone must go find them and tell those people, if they don’t come back now, they shouldn’t bother coming back ever! Let them rot wherever they are!"
With Lian Shouyi’s family nowhere to be found, there was barely anyone at the old house to even send out to run errands.
"Well, I’ll go look for them then," Lian Jizu finally said.
Da Niuniu couldn’t handle such a task, and naturally, no one expected Lian Duoduo to either. Lady Chiang needed to help Lady Zhou with the cooking, so the options were Lian Shouren and Lian Jizu.
Lian Shouren didn’t go out much these days, leaving only Lian Jizu to go.
It was unimaginable before to have Lian Jizu run errands like this, Lian Manman thought to herself.
Seeing Lian Jizu leave, Lady Zhou continued to curse. Noticing some displeasure on Lian Shouxin’s face, Old Master Lian coughed twice to stop Lady Zhou.
"Enough with the cursing, your Third Aunt and Third Uncle haven’t gone far yet. Hurry and wrap the dumplings with Jizu’s wife; they’ll be back soon," Old Master Lian instructed Lady Zhou.
"You’re the only one who can order me around!" Lady Zhou retorted unkindly to Old Master Lian. "I’m stuck with all this endless work, serving you all every day."
Despite her words, Lady Zhou actually stopped cursing and stayed in the outer room to prepare dumplings with Lady Chiang.
Lian Shouxin followed Old Master Lian back into the room where everyone took their seats. Old Master Lian indeed started chatting with Lian Shouxin about everyday life, with genuine concern.
"...I often think about you all...I’ve grown old and can’t help much anymore, only causing you more trouble. You are all good children, now with a big family and business, unlike before. Be mindful of everything. Here, your mother and I are doing fine. You have rules to follow, and when things arise, don’t worry about us..."
