Reborn as a Weak Earthling, I Became the Most Overpowered Mage Alive-Chapter 112: Ch : Saving the Kids - Part 2
"Now that we have had this conversation, let’s go back... is something wrong?"
Thief asked as Andrew suddenly stepped in his way. He could no longer sit around and pretend that all of this was alright... mainly because his ability was involved.
"As much as you want to take these kids back, I would have to ask you to stop. These kids are now familiars to me, and according to the system, they belong to me. So I will be taking them back."
Andrew had never spoken of a living thing as a possession before, but he had a feeling this was the only language that Thief would understand.
Thief paused and looked at Andrew with a critical eye, and Queen was also not far in expressing her emotions.
"You little bastard-! How dare you betray Thief like this-"
She attacked, but Seraphina blocked her attack. Fire met ice, and smoke immediately started to fill the area.
Seraphina was a higher level than Queen, so she easily pushed her back before she held her at the tip of her sword.
Thief noticed that he was not only outnumbered but also on the losing foot. So he pretended to be gracious and hear him out.
"Alright, I will hear you out. What do you mean by these kids are yours now? You are also aware of how hard we worked to empower these kids. How can we just hand them over to you?"
Thief asked, a little hurt and annoyed at Andrew’s proposal. But Andrew was not taken by his fake emotions.
These kids were currently looking at him as if he was their last lifeline, and he wanted to help them out this time.
"Currently, the only reason these kids are able to maintain their sanity is because of my ability. The system has already marked them as ’not suitable’ for the game, and I doubt any other kids you enhance would meet the criterion of being suitable either. So you should stop this project before you lose too many resources."
Andrew explained, knowing that Thief was not a fool who would purposely misunderstand his words.
Thief’s expression became lighter slowly as understanding began to creep into his eyes.
"Ah... I see. Is that how things are? I guess I should thank you for the help. As for our project... we will have to find another way to make it happen. It is too soon for us to give up on it."
Thief seemed to have no intention of stopping his experiments, and Andrew had a feeling that he won’t be able to stop him even if he tried his hardest.
So he gave up.
This time, he had to deal with the consequences of what happened, but next time, the problem would be Thief’s to deal with.
"Humans are such cruel creatures. They are even willing to sacrifice their own youth to get what they want. Or maybe it’s just you-!"
"Don’t you dare say those words. Who do you think you are-"
"Queen, it’s enough. We cannot beat that side right now, and I would rather maintain friendly relations with Andrew for now."
Thief told her, and Queen instantly folded at his words and pulled back.
She had an unhappy expression on her face, but given the situation, it felt a little fitting. The tension continued to rise until the pair was actually gone, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
"Finally, some peace and quiet. Let’s head back for now. Lilianna will take a look at you, and then you can help us around the farm..."
Of course, Andrew would have these kids sign a contract as official workers as well. That way, they won’t be abused by outside people or be used by them.
"A-About the others... still in the facility... Will you help them out as well?"
One of the modified kids asked in a small voice. She seemed shy but hopeful that Andrew would help her out.
Andrew wanted to tell her that it was not something that was in his hand at the moment. But one look at the child, and he decided to tell her a white lie.
"I will see what I can do. For now, let’s head back home."
He told the kids, but Seraphina seemed to have other plans. She looked around before she gave Andrew a clear look. Just a hint of anticipation betrayed what she felt at the moment.
"I need some time to look around. I will come back and tell you what I found."
She told Andrew, and he nodded. He trusted Seraphina enough to allow her to do what she wanted.
Even if she was hiding things from him and doing weird stuff, he had a feeling that she was on his side... at least, for now. Besides, there was no point in keeping tabs on her. She would find a way to evade them anyway.
"Alright. Make sure to come back soon."
He told her before he took the kids back to his estate.
They all looked a little hesitant to step on his property, but they followed him inside. They looked even more intimidated to see all the people around.
"Who are these brats... wait-! Are these modified soldiers-! Andrew, did you kidnap them? Oh god-! We are all going to die..."
Jenna complained, only to be reminded by Clara that she had no time to freak out since she was still working.
Lilianna quickly walked over to him and the kids to check them over. Her friendly nature and clear attitude helped the kids feel better, and they integrated themselves into the group in no time.
Once their sleeping arrangement had been sorted out, Clara wasted no time in putting these kids to work. It kept them distracted enough for the time being and also made them feel as if they were earning their keep.
But while their side was having such a good time, the same could not be said for Thief.
__________
"What’s the situation? How much damage did we suffer due to this?"
Thief asked as soon as he entered the facility. The scientists around him looked scared, but they still answered him.
"T-The damage was a lot... we lost all the kids we were working on. B-But our sponsor said he has something to say to us..."
