Reborn as a Weak Earthling, I Became the Most Overpowered Mage Alive-Chapter 113: Ch : Mysterious Sponsor of the Human Experiment
Thief’s mana drained out of his body as soon as he heard that their ’sponsor’ wanted to talk to them. Their sponsor was the whole reason this experiment existed and why they were able to come this far.
However, Thief was also afraid of what their sponsor would say after things had already become like this. Would he understand? Or be disappointed?
...or would he pull back from this experiment?
"Sir, our sponsor is trying to connect to our main system. Should I..."
"Allow them full access. We cannot afford to have them doubt us. Especially after what happened."
Thief told the doctor, and she nodded. The system was connected and ready to take the sponsor’s messages in no time.
[I heard what happened. It seems that the system is not ready to accept artificial humans as part of its games just yet. But don’t lose hope. There is no need to feel sorry or angry about what happened.]
The sponsor only typed these messages, but somehow, his sincerity shined through his words. Any tension Thief felt was instantly drained out of his body, and he felt relaxed once more.
"I apologize once more for the mess that was caused. I did not... expect the system to interfere..."
Thief made an excuse, and he hoped that his sponsor wouldn’t take it the wrong way.
When there was no answer from the other side, he felt his heart skip a beat and wondered if he had already been abandoned by their sponsor.
But after two minutes of waiting, the answer did come back.
[I apologize for the delay in this reply. I needed to check on something. So where were we... ah, the system interference. Don’t worry about it. It was something I expected to happen and took into account. You do not have to feel bad about it.]
These words made Thief feel even worse. He felt like a failure because of what happened.
But he was also thankful for how great their sponsor was at times like this. He never got angry and also encouraged them to do better.
"I understand. I will try not to feel discouraged. But what should we do about this experiment...?"
He asked, and the reply came back immediately.
[Since the system won’t accept humans that were later modified, then how about giving it to humans that were born modified? I will give you the ability to modify unborn humans so that you can have a workforce.]
There was silence around the room as everyone digested the words.
"Yes... that is an option. If this works, then we will not have to worry about getting test subjects again in our lives, and we can teach those soldiers to be strong and obedient from the start. So, what do we need to do...?"
Thief asked, and the sponsor sent them a document.
[Read this over. This will give your doctors the necessary skills to achieve what they want. However, do be careful this time. The system will be on full alert against you after what happened. It might even make you public enemy no. 1.]
The sponsor warned, but Thief did not look worried.
"That is a possibility I am ready to embrace. For the future of humankind, I will need to see things through."
It was a promise not only to himself but to their sponsor and all those around him.
They were all unaware of the figure looking on and recording them from the shadows.
Seraphina fulfilled the second secret mission she got from the system without any hitch, and as soon as the meeting was finished, she decided to take her leave as well.
[Secret Mission accomplished: Find out the cause behind the human genetic modification plan.]
[Reward: System Authority +1.]
[Current System Authority: 2 (Reach 15 to unlock the first rank)]
Things were progressing smoothly... a little too smoothly at this point. But still, something felt off.
Why would a sponsor go out of their way to help humans with such a thing? Especially when the system had made it clear that it did not want humans to be genetically modified.
Was it a way for them to rebel? Or was there another reason behind it? No matter how she saw it, it just felt like humanity getting betrayed.
’Not that I am one to talk. I am the biggest traitor here. But still...’
"What a horrible race. It seems that nothing else matters when it comes to profit and survival."
Seraphina spoke, but no one heard her. She quickly pulled herself together and decided that it was time to start heading back now.
The system had not warned her not to share the information she had found, so she was going to tell Andrew about it. Perhaps he and Emperor would have more information about it all.
She was about to leave when she suddenly felt a presence standing behind her.
"Miss... Seraphina, right? I guess you found out all about our project today... there is no need to become this tense. I just want to have a talk with you about the future and wanting you to become a part of my team."
Thief found her in the room and offered her this. It was unclear to her whether he already knew that she had been spying on him, or if he had found out another way.
But whatever the reason was, Seraphina had only one thing to say to him.
"I am sorry, but I do not strike deals with people who have no morals left. Besides, I don’t trust that sponsor of yours one bit. You should learn to be a little more cautious as well."
Seraphina told him, and Thief just chuckled.
"Well, you and I have that in common. I don’t trust anyone either. But sometimes, an agreement of mutual interest is enough to bind people to one side. As for my offer, do think about it. Who knows...? You might change your mind after thinking about it."
Thief told her, and Seraphina felt an odd sensation trying to probe her mind.
She immediately recognized someone trying to use a mental ability on her, and she broke free. The man who tried to control her was hiding behind Thief, and he suddenly let out a pain-filled moan.
"Tsk, scum. At least have the decency to invite me without tricks first. Not that I am ever going to come over to your side."
She firmly refused before she left Thief and the Peace Organization alone.
