Chapter 194: Inner voice

Amelia pressed her forehead against the cold bars, her breathing ragged. The shackles of the chains clamped around her hands were a clear reminder that she wasn’t free.

The men were ready to shoot, prepared with their aim, but for some reason, they hadn’t shot yet.

As much as Amelia wanted to feel relaxed and hope someone came to stop them, the absence of any new scent was a clear indication that no one had arrived.

It was probably one of Dominic’s tricks to see more fear and pain on her face and in her eyes, and she didn’t want him to enjoy it. Thus, she kept her eyes closed.

Rather than focusing on what was about to happen next, she tried to focus on the memories that made her feel loved in this lifetime.

Her lips trembled as Kyle’s and Cyrus’s faces appeared in her mind. She had tried to be strong for them and wanted to give them something in the world that stripped away their happiness in similar ways by taking away their parents and then constantly making things hard for them.

However, she probably failed.

She might’ve helped their mother escape, but as a mate, she failed.

Her chest heaved as another sob left her mouth.

Kyle’s words about claiming her as his Luna and Queen once his identity was announced, and Cyrus’s desire to flaunt her to the world, echoed in her head, making her want to place her hand on her chest to ease the pain.

However, it was almost as if her body was in shock as she hugged herself to ease the pain subconsciously.

Cyrus’s care... Kyle’s snarky remarks... their laughs, the way their eyes used to shine when they used to be happy... She should’ve loved them more while she had the time and opportunity.

But she was so busy acting like a self-absorbed person, trying to make everything right, that she forgot to see and appreciate what was already right in front of her.

A new wave of hot tears rolled down Amelia’s cheeks as her shoulders trembled in pain and agony, in remorse for the failure that she proved to be as a mate.

"Moon Goddess," she whispered hoarsely, her voice shaking with desperation. "Please... just one more chance. Don’t let it end here, not like this. Let me protect them once more. Let me love them longer. I’ll give anything... anything..."

Another sob left her mouth, and what started as fear and sadness for her pitiful fate began to turn into anger and frustration for herself.

"You know... seeing you cry and act for mercy like this... I am so tempted to film it and send it to your so-called husband. I wonder if it would break him." Dominic’s cold and amused words were like silver whiplashes, and Amelia clenched her fists around herself.

Her nails dug into her palm, drawing blood.

"I heard many wolves who are obsessed with their wives go insane after their death. Do you think Cyrus would go insane? After all, his wolf did appear because of you. Everything would be good for me if that happened." Dominic said as he proceeded to bring out his phone to record everything.

Humiliation gnawed at every cell of Amelia’s body.

She shut her eyes, more like clenching them.

He walked to the cage and removed the shackles from her hands himself.

Dominic fisted her hair, pulling her out of the cage to the center of the clearing.

"This is going to be cinematic," Dominic grinned as he kicked Amelia straight in the abdomen with a force that made her double over in pain and cough blood.

"Cyrus is going to love it," he added before he kicked Amelia again.

Amelia grabbed his feet before pushing him away.

The sudden impact sent him tumbling backwards, and his anger surged even more.

He forced his phone into the hands of one of his men before he grabbed Amelia’s jaw in a steel-like grip.

"You still want to fight after everything?" His eyes blazed with a kind of anger and hatred that was hard to understand.

The man slapped her hard across the face, making her lip burst as her ears rang with the impact of the slap.

Her head felt dizzy as she tried hard to concentrate. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

With little energy left, she still tried to fight back and push him away to buy herself time. However, she was too weak. Too weak to move, fight, to run.

"I will make each one of you regret ever standing against me." Dominic’s hands grabbed her neck in a steel-like grip, ready to break her bones this time.

Amelia closed her eyes.

If this is my last breath, I would like to apologize to all the entities I failed. But I would die a proud mage. Amelia thought, and then she opened her eyes to face Dominic.

As soon as she opened her eyes and looked at the man, something snapped inside her.

It wasn’t despair or surrender. It didn’t snap due to a realization but rather a weird fire.

Amelia grabbed Dominic’s hand with a new burst of energy and pushed him away with an intensity that made him fly a few feet back, his back hitting the trunk of a tree. The sickening sound of bones cracking echoed in the air.

The men surrounding looked at the girl, too shocked to react.

Did this girl throw a powerful royal with that kind of intensity when she was so heavily wounded? How was that even possible?

Wasn’t she unable to even stand earlier?

Amelia’s eyes wavered, not with fear or helplessness this time. Something changed inside her. Her amber eyes, which had dimmed their light, were now shining, not just shining but glowing golden.

Dominic groaned in his place, clenching his fists as he forced his wolf to shift the entire healing to his bones, making him stand in just a few seconds.

The man glared at the girl.

There was no way a random healer had that burst of energy out of nowhere. For her to be able to throw him that far, it only meant one thing... She was pretending to be weak earlier.

His wolf surfaced at the blatant disrespect. However, as soon as he looked into Amelia’s eyes, something made him gulp and tremble in fear.

He walked back to the back of Dominic’s mind, surprising his human counterpart, who looked at him in shock when he saw him fucking his tail between his legs.

"What’s wrong, Alpha?" Dominic asked his wolf, whom he named Alpha.

Alpha shook his head, saying nothing.

"Let me tell you what happened." Amelia’s inner voice shocked her as she was forced to the back of her mind. However, this time she didn’t lose her consciousness like always.

"Your wolf is nothing more than a puppy before me. He has recognized his queen." Amelia heard a different voice this time, and realization dawned upon her.

This... this wasn’t her insane mage’s powers that had taken over to control the situation. Instead...it was her wolf.

Goosebumps rose on her skin, and Dominic growled.

"Queen, my foot! You are nothing more than a bitch that I’ll end today!" Dominic snarled before looking at his men.

"What are you guys waiting for? Teach this bitch a lesson she desperately needs," he ordered.

Amelia’s wolf smirked.

She looked at the men who aimed their arrows at her for the third time.

She took a deep breath and tilted her head as if merely amused at what she was seeing.

The first series of arrows was loosened, slicing through the air as it went straight towards Amelia to pierce her.

However, the arrows never reached her.

A shimmering barrier appeared, like a shield of pure moonlight, glowing bright, protecting Amelia from the arrows.

Everyone watched bewildered.

Dominic stumbled back.

This wasn’t true... How was this even possible? This girl...she was supposed to be a mere healer. Then how could she...?

The arrows shattered against the barrier as it swallowed it all. Another series of arrows was shot at her, followed by the daggers, and then even swords, but nothing worked.

Amelia raised her hand, her mark no longer hurting her as it glowed and burned with a calm blue light, like the fire in its purest form.

She pushed the air around her with her hands. As soon as she did that, the men who had been attacking her were forced a few feet away from the centre, all starting to burn through the fire she used.

Dominic’s heart skipped a beat.

Amelia’s breath grew heavy. Even at the back of her mind, she could feel every sensation traveling through her body. Her fear was still there...but it was different this time.

Finally, you called for me. Your true mage powers. Your wolf, who is the actual mage, the most superior of all. Don’t worry. As long as I am alive, no one will touch you in this lifetime. The voice said to Amelia.

As soon as Amelia heard her wolf’s comforting words, she broke down in the back of her head, thinking about everything that was about to go wrong, could’ve gone wrong.

Amelia’s wolf smiled at the girl before focusing on the man before her.

Amelia’s tears kept falling, but now they were different. They were not of helplessness, but of awe. She rose shakily to her feet, retaking control of her body, power surging around her as if the goddess herself had answered her plea.

The men Dominic brought faltered, some stepping back in shock and fear from the previous ordeals as the faint outline of a wolf shimmered behind her, a great silver silhouette that howled silently against the trees.

They had never seen something like this before, a wolf’s soul standing behind its human counterpart as if guarding her like a shield herself.

It was beyond breathtaking, beyond magic or the legends that they heard of.

"You thought I’d die a prisoner," she whispered, her eyes burning with light.

"But I was never yours to break, Dominic. I was always the Moon’s," she added.

Realization dawned upon Dominic when he heard her last sentence.

It was.... the Moon Wolf, born once in 1000 years.

But how could... how could a mere healer have it?
