Considering the fact that Obed Montgomery was a ghost client nobody in the cafe was eager to help, his name raised a few hackles. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

Obed himself had been hiding behind a few ghosts, trying to be inconspicuous until his name was blasted out. The moment he raised his head, all the ghost seeing humans in the cafe recognized him.

He waved his pale hand and managed a nervous smile, particularly keeping an eye on Rekha.

"This place is weird." A woman said.

All the ghost seeing humans ignored that and maintained their eyes on Obed. Rekha sprang up like a released coil ready to chase him away.

"Unbelievable, some people just can't take a hint." She snarled.

"Easy Rekha." Maureen's voice snapped her back to focus. Her hand pulled Rekha back, to stop her from shouting at the invisible ghost and freaking out the ordinary humans that were just enjoying a drink and some snacks.

Phoebe pushed back the chair gently. "Show him to my office." She politely ordered Rosset. With her back turned, she did not notice that everyone followed her to the office. Not until she attempted to close the door and realized it would not budge.

"Guys come on!" Phoebe's wide eyes stared at them. "You know the rules, client consultations are private." She gestured at them to leave.

Maureen settled into one of the chairs in the open area. "No, can do. This one falls in the guardian category because he is a founding family ghost." She said in a nonchalant way, her eyes drifting to Obed. "Start from the good parts, we have do not have the whole day to waste on your sorry dead ass." Her tone was dead pan, her muscles uncoiling as she stretched out her knee.

Obed was much more relaxed than earlier; he put his hands behind his back. All the nervousness he had exhibited earlier was gone.

A weary sigh came from Obed. "I cannot help but feel unwelcome here which is not a great feeling, especially coming from you Maureen. Hunters stick together; we have each other's backs in life or death. I understand Rekha's negative sentiments against me because of the complications of our family but I do not understand your animosity, we were once friends!"

Moving her index finger from side to side, Maureen denied his claims immediately. "Friends? Ha! You sat behind me in the energy manipulation class in our second year at the academy but that does not make us friends Obed. We were classmates, do not twist things around." She twisted her lips into a tight fold.

"Damn! that cuts deep." Obed feigned hurt, putting a hand on his chest. "I always

thought

we had something special Maureen."

"I wish you were a demon so that I could gut you." Maureen said.

Clapping his hands to get their attention, David reminded them not to waste any more of their time on pointless bickering. "Obed what is bothering you?" He asked, his fingers urging the ghost to hasten in his speech.

"I came to see Phoebe, the rest of you can leave." Obed threw Rekha a sharp glass. "Especially you since you do not want to involve yourself in the Montgomery business." He added.

The way he spoke, his tone was filled with so much arrogance. He had not come with a request for help, it seemed he expected it.

Rekha let out a mocking pft, rolling her eyes. "This is my territory too and Phoebe is my person. Be glad that she is kind and sweet or else I would see to it that you miss your ride to the afterlife and roam the earth for eternity. Obviously, something is keeping you here and you will not be moving on without fixing it. So, what is it? Did you Montgomery's bury a few bodies and now you want to confess where they are buried." She spoke through clenched teeth.

A wistful glint crossed his eyes. "I wish that was the case." A small chuckle laced with longing came from him, wiping a tear before it could fall.

Those in the room exchanged glances, suddenly curiosity taking over. What was worse than Rekha's theoretical nonexistent bodies? It sounded like a dark secret that they wanted in on.

"Alright Obed, pack your ass and spit it out." Maureen ordered.

The ghost's eyes moved to Phoebe and remained there. "The ghosts that sent me here told me that you are a powerful shaman. I have also heard about your special abilities, and I am here because I need your help. You cannot allow my family to bury me in fact I want my body cremated." He made a request.

"This is it!" Rekha thundered, fists clenched. "You have been stalking me nonstop because of this! Why, is it because you do not want to be buried in an oak coffin?" Her eyes glinted with a mix of disappointment and anger.

Maureen laughed, the sound was as sharp as broken glass. "Obed i must say that I am disappointed as well by your request, I thought that there was something terrifying with the way you made it sound." She tilted her head to the right and added, "You know what, given how weird the funeral rituals of your family are, I would not want to be buried either.

But this is not a job for us, just go and tell the guardians in your family to do that for you." She proposed swiftly, the sofa creaked when she slumped against it. "You need a new sofa Pheebs. Did you get this one from a garage sale or something?"

Grandma Mayfair slapped Maureen on the arm. "A better time Maureen."

The old woman had nothing against Obed, but she did not like him much either. She was seeing nothing but a stranger...a dead stranger.

"But why have you not done that?" Phoebe leaned forward her eyes scrutinizing him, the executive chair moved from side to side. "Going to your family would be the normal thing to do unless there is more to this story." She drawled, one eyebrow arched.

All their gazes pinned on the ghost, waiting for him to say more.

Obed floated upwards and he sighed, releasing what was on his mind suddenly. "It is the rituals involved with how my family conducts its burials, I want nothing to do with it."
