REBORN: MEET MY BROTHERS-Chapter 45: I WANT GRANDCHILDREN
Ava couldn’t help her smile as she observed Evelyn. How can someone so wealthy be so kind and warm? It was the opposite of what she’d imagined.
Honestly, in this life, she’d hoped for the same treatment like her previous life. The only difference being that she wasn’t going to feel bad about it. But this level of care wasn’t something she’d wanted, especially not from Maximus or his mother.
"Thank you, Evelyn."
Evelyn smiled again. She squeezed Ava’s hand gently before taking her to the table. Maximus had already pulled out a chair for his little wife beside him.
"Sit here, dear," Evelyn said, guiding her to the seat beside Maximus.
Ava hesitated for a moment. With the memory from last night, she wanted to be as far away from Maximus as possible, but this wasn’t possible now.
Ava inhaled softly as she sat down close to Maximus, but she got distracted as her eyes moved to the numerous dishes in front of her. She was about to dish some waffles into her plates but Maximus beat her to it.
He added berries, a little extra honey, and a generous dollop of whipped cream, just like she liked it. It had her wondering how he could predict what she craved, but Maximus simply smiled at her puzzled look, already knowing his little wife’s thoughts.
Lately, he could read her thoughts so easily with a little attention, just like now. He’d seen the gleam in her eyes when she stared at the waffles. And for her favorite toppings, he’d watched her countless times eating this, even if she wasn’t aware.
He set the plate in front of her, earning a soft thank you that made his smile grow.
Evelyn who watched the exchange, felt her heart swell. It had been years since she’d seen her son this relaxed, this... human. His smiles were rare, so rare that she could count the number of times the boy had since he returned to her. But now, watching him smile just by staring at Ava made her extremely happy.
"Have you two thought about a wedding date?" she asked casually, taking a sip of her tea. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
Ava flinched at the question. Her chest tightened too as she dropped her cutlery softly on the plate, folding her hands on her thighs.
Maximus, however, didn’t flinch. He looked at Evelyn calmly and answered, "We’re not in a rush, Mum. I want Ava to decide when she’s ready."
Evelyn’s eyes lit up as she turned to Ava. "What do you think, dear? Since Maximus is leaving it up to you, do you have a date in mind?"
The sudden attention made Ava squirm. She forced on a tight smile, trying to avoid Evelyn’s hopeful gaze. How could she tell this woman that she wasn’t even sure she wanted to go through with the marriage? Ava didn’t want to say it, at least not now.
Noticing Ava’s uneasiness, Maximus decided to step in. "Don’t push it, Mum. I’ve already given you a daughter-in-law, haven’t I?"
Evelyn frowned, unimpressed. "An engagement isn’t a marriage, Maximus. That can be broken off at any moment." She gestured between the two of them. "You’re clearly in no hurry, and it’s frustrating to watch."
Evelyn sighed at the silence in the room. She hated Maximus’s nonchalance as he continued eating his food. She didn’t understand why Maximus take things like this unseriously. There was attraction between them, and probably love too, but he was holding back. Why was what she couldn’t fathom.
Her eyes moved to Ava who poked at her waffles, trying to keep her head down. She couldn’t blame Ava for any of these. Men were supposed to be proactive, not the ladies.
"Fine," she said finally, "Take your time with the wedding, but I have one condition."
Ava looked up. Evelyn’s words only made her suspicious. "Condition?"
Evelyn nodded, taking a slow bite of her toast, before setting it down carefully. "I want grandchildren."
Ava choked on her orange juice. "G-Grandchildren?"
Maximus chuckled, setting down his fork as he glanced at his mother. "Don’t you think that’s a little premature, Mum? Ava hasn’t even finished college yet."
Ava nodded quickly. "Exactly! College first, Evelyn. I can’t even think about -about that right now."
Evelyn smiled. "If you can’t have children now, it’s understandable, but you two should at least get married. If you both can’t pick out a date, I’ll gladly do so."
Ava shot Maximus a look, silently begging him to say something more. But he simply smirked, his eyes twinkling with amusement at her flustered state. He’d warned her about how relentless his mother could be and Ava had taken his words for granted.
"That’s not for you to decide, Mother-"
"No, it’s not. But since you’re both nonchalant, someone has to step in and I’d gladly do."
.
.
Evelyn sat down in the living room with a fashion magazine in one hand, and a cup of aromatic tea in the other which she took a sip from. With Ava gone, she reverted back to her hobbies.
She flipped a page of the glossy magazine before Fiddlestick walked into the room.
"Enjoying the evening, Madam?" He asked politely.
Evelyn glanced up, and a small smile played at the corner of her lips. "Surprisingly, yes," she replied. "It’s hard not to, now that Maximus isn’t getting on my nerves anymore."
"I take it that this newfound tranquility has something to do with Miss Ava’s presence?"
Evelyn chuckled softly, setting her tea down on the glass table. "Oh, absolutely. You know how stubborn Maximus is, but surprisingly, the girl has him wrapped around her fingers."
She chuckled again as she thought of the breakfast they had together. "It’s been a long time since I’ve seen him like this, Fiddlestick."
"Shall I prepare for the possibility of wedding bells in the near future, then?"
Evelyn could barely hold in her smile. "Of course."
Fiddlestick smiled softly before he walked closer to her, holding a folder. "This came in earlier. It looks important so I wanted to deliver it in person."
"Thank you."
He nodded and walked out.
Evelyn studied the folder before opening it. She skimmed through the document and picked out the important message. It was a marriage proposal from the Whitlocks.
As she continued reading the document, she noticed a clause that picked her interest. The clause read that their daughter was going to get married only after college.
