Reborn to Redeem: Their Abusive Love-Chapter 49: Go save her
Chapter 49: Go save her
Pei Zhen was certainly an outsider to the Underground City, so might the person who replaced his destiny also be an outsider?
An insignificant question. It had no relevance to the current situation.
Xu Si wondered why she had even asked, then found it amusing upon reflection. Perhaps there was a glimmer of hope left in the depths of her heart. The established fact was there; in her subconscious, she just hoped the well-behaved boy hadn’t died.
Faced with such a question, the other party did pause for a moment.
Chen Mo glanced at the ubiquitous surveillance cameras and said guardedly, "Although I’m not sure what this question implies, I can secretly tell you that our leader is not an outsider."
"I see. I was just asking casually. Don’t take it to heart, Mr. Chen." Xu Si lowered her eyelids and set her glass on a waiter’s tray. "Someone is calling me; I must excuse myself."
She picked up her handbag, her gaze swept over the sea, revealing her disappointment as she departed with a graceful stride.
Watching her walk away, Chen Mo smiled. His previously polite demeanor vanished, replaced by sharp, chiseled features and a sinister, ferocious glint in his eyes—a hallmark of Underground City members.
TSK. Of all the questions to ask, she had to choose the hardest one to answer. He had certainly lied. But what choice did he have?
The Triad Society’s most taboo subject was their boss’s status as an outsider. In the past, in Gambling City, anyone who had mentioned he was an outsider had met a terrible fate.
Consequently, no one dared to whisper about it or raise any objections, even in secret.
Everyone believed that a madman like the boss was inherently meant to be part of the Underground City.
In a blind spot of the cocktail party, a group of ferocious-looking men had just entered the hotel when their leader, a man dressed in black, abruptly stopped. He turned slightly. The others, understanding instantly, lowered their heads and dispersed, giving him ample space.
He seemed to recall something. Quickly stepping back a few paces, he crouched, furrowed his brow, and peered intently through the marble pillars towards the banquet area.
The corner he was observing was now empty.
A bald, muscular man, nearly two-point-three meters tall, stepped forward. Following the boss’s gaze, he asked in a deep, powerful voice, "Boss, who are you looking for?"
The man in black enigmatically withdrew his gaze and shook his head, slightly tilting his chin. His smoky-grey eyes, veiled as if by mist, were barely discernible. "Ah, it’s nothing. I just thought I saw someone familiar."
The muscular bald man then asked, "Boss, do you need me to find them?"
"No need." The masked man in black gave a lazy smile and casually picked up a glass of wine from a nearby waiter’s tray. His eyes, however, held no mirth, only an intense, bone-penetrating chill. "The lights must have been too dim. I actually thought she’d come to this godforsaken place to see me, even for a glance."
His subordinates didn’t understand who this ’her’ the boss referred to was. None of them dared to speak, simply following him as he strode forward.
The cocktail party had just begun. After a melodious tune, the exceptionally prosperous independent city across the water suddenly erupted with violent, incessant gunfire. In less than two minutes, the chaos spread to the party on the beach.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
As if intentionally crashing the event, golden bullets flew from all directions, shattering countless bottles of wine.
Seeing this, waiters and bodyguards instantly drew their guns. They aimed at the troublemakers and fired without hesitation, moving like a well-trained army.
The sudden violence threw everyone into a panic. Guests screamed, waving their arms frantically as they fled.
Trouble is brewing. Gang warfare, Xu Si thought. One second she was conversing with someone; the next, her survivor’s instincts flared up. Her body reacted faster than her mind: she ducked her head and scrambled under the nearest table.
The stuffy, oppressive air, the deafening crack of bullets exploding near her ears, and the sickening thuds of bodies hitting the ground—it was all unbearable.
Someone knocked over an ornamental flower basket, and a spherical surveillance camera rolled out from inside. In the midst of such chaos, no one noticed the small device.
And that very camera was aimed directly at Xu Si’s face, capturing her pale, distraught features with perfect clarity.
「Meanwhile, in the monitoring room on the second floor of the hotel.」
Someone emerged from the noisy surroundings, wiping cold sweat from their brow. Without daring to lift their head, they bowed to the figure in black and reported, "Boss, gang fights have broken out in the Underground City, and they’ve targeted our Triad Society. They’re trashing the place. We’ve already notified our members to head this way; it should be resolved quickly."
The man in black remained silent, his gaze sweeping across the bank of monitors before suddenly freezing.
One screen perfectly reflected a woman’s figure, clear and distinct. Her lustrous, peach-blossom eyes were so bright they seemed impossible to hide.
"..."
He froze.
His pale fingers touched the screen; the icy sensation made him withdraw his hand in disbelief.
His silver hair seemed to float in the dim light of the room.
He took a step back, tilting his head up slightly. His exposed, smoke-grey pupils were wide, their edges tinged with red. His inherently terrifying gaze seemed intense enough to pierce through the monitor.
His men, assuming he was angry, drew their guns, ready to go out and deal with the disturbance.
Little did they know that beneath the man’s mask, the corners of his alluring lips were twisting into a manic grin. The next second, uncontrollable laughter rumbled from his throat.
HAHAHA! I must be going mad!
Ah, so I wasn’t mistaken. It really is her!
After a long while, once he had finally laughed his fill, he propped his cheek on his hand. Pointing a slender finger at the frightened woman on the screen, his voice dropped to a low, deep tone, "So pitiful, isn’t she?"
The bald, muscular man said expressionlessly, "Yes. Do you want her eliminated?"
"..."
The man in black switched off the monitor. His eyes were bloodshot, his smile entirely gone. "You go and help her. If she dies, I’ll kill you."
"Yes, Boss."
The bald, muscular man stared at the now-dark screen, memorizing the woman’s face. Then, he turned, pushed open the door, and sprinted towards the cocktail party area.
「*」
The moment the gunfire erupted, Xu Si lost all ability to think or act. No amount of willpower could override her body’s instinctual self-preservation response. It wasn’t that she was scared; her mind had simply gone blank reflexively, leaving her unable to control her body. She could only hide under the table, completely immobile.
The sporadic gunfire drew nearer and nearer. It was so close that Xu Si, her mind reeling, could still perceive heavy footsteps slowly approaching her before two shots rang out from somewhere nearby.
She bit the tip of her tongue, the pain jolting her slightly back to her senses.
Suddenly, the man lifted the velvet tablecloth and leaned down, his fierce gaze locking with hers.
A true villain always has an undeniable aura about them. Just one look is enough to send a chill down your spine. Another person from the Underground City!
Xu Si felt her vision dim. To be discovered at a time like this... I could easily get shot! Especially since this newcomer is so tall and burly, like a walking, mutated giant.
She silently shifted, wanting to run.
But the man merely bent down to study her face. After two seconds, as if confirming something, he asked in a hoarse voice, "Do you plan to hide here forever?"
After speaking, he straightened up and fired another shot in the direction behind her. Someone cried out and fell.
What? Xu Si’s heart seemed to stop, and the little rationality she had managed to gather instantly dissipated again.
Seeing her remain silent for so long, the bald giant furrowed his brow and awkwardly squeezed under the table with her.
"Then let’s stay here," he grunted.
A long time passed, and no one else approached.
Xu Si bit her tongue again. The metallic, rusty taste filled her mouth, and some of her rationality returned.
Then...
She saw the entire table above them being lifted by the man’s back. The table legs were now about ten centimeters off the floor! It was completely suspended in the air—utterly bizarre!
"..."
She took a deep breath and asked hesitantly, "Do you... really think it’s appropriate for *you* to be hiding here?"
