Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 468: Come Back to Me (2)
Lennox expected Adrienne to put a distance between them after witnessing how cruel he could be, but to his surprise, she showed compassion and understanding instead. He’d never pretended to be a good man from the start, and Adrienne knew what kind of person he was prior to their marriage.
Adrienne saw the pain and darkness in his eyes, yet she chose to love him unconditionally. She saw beyond his flaws and accepted him for who he truly was. Truth be told, Lennox thought he might not be so different from Alistair. Though he was active in dealing with his underground connections, that didn’t mean his hands were entirely clean. It was just that he was careful not to leave traces that could lead back to him.
"I’m sorry," he heard Adrienne say as she silently sobbed in his embrace. Her hands fisted at his shirt. "If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t have to endure this pain in our marriage."
"If there’s something I won’t regret, Addie, that you would be choosing to be with you. I would choose you over and over again." Lennox kissed her crown, thinking about all the memories they had created together.
He had never felt so alive before meeting her, and he couldn’t imagine a life without her at this point in his life. He thought he had already figured out what he wanted in life. But now he realized that everything has changed since he met Adrienne.
Lennox never anticipated that he would meet Adrienne and be with her after the accident. However, no, he didn’t care about anything else. All he wanted was to be with her, every single day.
His instincts were telling him to protect her and not allow her to meet Alistair head-on, but Lennox knew there were things Adrienne needed to face on her own. This was a war they had to win, even if it meant fighting a battle against their own fears and doubts.
Adrienne shut her eyes and forced herself to calm down. Alistair was trying to find all means to destroy her husband and Huayi in order to have her. But she was determined to protect both herself and Huayi, no matter the cost.
’Come to me, and I will leave them be.’
This was the message Alistair left for her, hoping that she would reconsider and choose him instead. But he underestimated Adrienne. She was no fool. She knew that Alistair wouldn’t leave Lennox and Huayi off. He wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to strike at Lennox.
Not unless Adrienne gives him a reason to retreat.
Her stomach churned as she considered their situation. Alistair wasn’t the only enemy of Huayi. Other companies were also looking for an opportunity to take them down. She knew that if she continued to resist, Alistair would try to threaten her again. It was Myrtle today, so who would he try to threaten tomorrow?
Adrienne knew what was at stake and that her decision would affect everyone around her. It was always those who were innocent who had to bear the brunt of war and its consequences. She couldn’t let fear dictate her actions, but she also couldn’t ignore the potential harm that could befall her loved ones.
She was the only one who could stop this. If she agreed to see Alistair, there might be a possibility that she might never return. If things went south and Hunter failed, she had no doubt Alistair would trap her again, putting herself in even greater danger.
Adrienne had been restless throughout the day. She made several calls, including reaching out to Katherine Shen, hoping she could give her brother some assistance to increase the succession rate of his mission. Adrienne knew time was running out, but she was determined to find a way to help her brother.
They were waiting for Hunter’s call before they could proceed with the plan. They thought they had enough time, but Alistair’s sudden attack this morning proved that he was impatient to carry out his plan. It was only then that she would willingly meet Alistair. Her brother only had one chance to strike him down, and Adrienne was determined to make it count.
Her husband was equally distracted as her. Adrienne glanced at Lennox worriedly. She knew he was willing to give everything to keep her safe, even if it meant subjecting himself to danger. She knew him well enough to know what he was willing to do for her sake.
Her chest tightened at the thought. When she was reborn, love was never part of her plan. All she wanted was to save her mother and protect Myrtle and Dylan. When she struck a deal with Lennox, all she wanted was a safety net for her future. Someone she could use to achieve her goals without any intention of developing genuine feelings.
It was four in the afternoon when Hunter’s call arrived. Lennox stiffened in his seat, knowing well that this call would change everything. She then sent a message to Alistair using Myrtle’s phone, telling him, "You have a deal."
On her brother’s cue, Adrienne started to make preparations. She went to her walk-in closet to find a suitable outfit to wear, aware that her husband was following her.
Adrienne changed her clothes and started tying her long hair in a high ponytail when she saw her husband’s reflection in the mirror before her. He looked at her with concern.
"Are you sure about this, Addie?" he asked softly, his voice laced with worry.
"I have to do this, Lennox," she replied, her voice steady despite the uncertainty that lingered within her.
"Alistair would lower his guard because of me. I’ll keep him occupied and distracted while you and the others make your move," she continued. "If there’s even the slightest chance that we can end this once and for all, I can’t let it slip away."
"Just promise me one thing, Addie. Promise me that you’ll be careful and that you’ll come back to me. Promise me that you won’t take any unnecessary risks."
Adrienne took a deep breath and turned to face him, her heart pounding in her chest. She reached out to grasp his hands, the warmth of his touch offering her a sense of comfort amidst the turmoil in her heart. A small smile tugged at Adrienne’s lips as she brushed her thumb against his cheek.
"I promise," she whispered, willing herself to believe in those words just as much as she wanted him to believe in them too.
With a heavy heart, Lennox leaned down and pressed a tender kiss against Adrienne’s forehead. He wished he could shield her from all the darkness that surrounded them, but he knew that was impossible. All he could do was support her and fight alongside her.
As they made their way downstairs, Adrienne could feel the weight of responsibility settling on her shoulders. She had made a choice, one that would determine the course of their lives.
