Refusing to Remarry: Mr. Hawthorne, You Are Out-Chapter 148: She Fell Asleep at Your Door
The next second, Raine Sinclair stood up.
She turned her back to Jonas Hawthorne and sighed softly.
"You’re doing this for the child, aren’t you? Jonas, you really don’t have to. I’ve told you I’ve moved on."
"Is that so?" Jonas Hawthorne slowly lifted his lips, "Then why are you here?"
If she had moved on, why come to take care of him?
Why is she still so concerned about the matters of the Hawthorne Family?
Raine Sinclair’s body stiffened at the question.
After a long pause, she finally replied, "When you got into trouble, my brothers were partly responsible. I just don’t want to owe you any more."
Saying this, she then took her steps and left.
These words were not only meant for Jonas Hawthorne but also for herself...
What she didn’t know was, after she left, Jonas Hawthorne smiled bitterly to himself, "But I owe you so much." 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
Outside the ward, Raine Sinclair leaned against the hard wall and sighed slowly.
Suddenly feeling a bit tired, she found a chair and sat down.
The scenes that had just happened replayed in her mind like a movie.
Sitting there, she unknowingly fell asleep.
The nurse beside her saw and hurriedly pushed a small bed over to help her lie down, covered her with a blanket, and wheeled her to the adjoining room.
When John Franklin’s surgery was over, it was almost evening.
As soon as he returned, the nurse said, "Dr. Franklin, Dr. Lawson seems to be very tired, she’s resting in the next room. Mr. Hawthorne woke up and ate something simple, but fell back to sleep as he was exhausted, though all his vital signs are stable."
"Hmm." John Franklin was taking off his surgical cap, the eyes behind his transparent glasses revealed fatigue.
After eight consecutive hours of treatment, his body was overly tired.
Fortunately, Mrs. Hawthorne was out of life-threatening danger by now and only needed to rest well; she’d wake up once her strength returned.
John Franklin first went to see Raine Sinclair, then went to Jonas Hawthorne’s room.
Just as he entered, Jonas Hawthorne woke up, as if sensing something.
"How do you feel? Is there any discomfort?" John Franklin asked while reviewing Jonas Hawthorne’s blood pressure records.
Jonas Hawthorne half sat up, his complexion looking much better, "No."
John Franklin performed another check on him to confirm there were no current issues, then allowed the nurse to leave.
Once the room was quiet again, John Franklin sat on a stool beside, continually writing something on the medical record.
"If you want to ask anything, just go ahead."
His voice was calm, with a slight trace of weariness.
Leaning against the headboard, Jonas Hawthorne studied him for a moment before slowly parting his lips, "How is Grandma?"
"Jordan Holden’s medical system is very advanced. Most of the toxin has been cleared, only a small residual needs to be metabolized by her body. But her life is saved; she just needs good care moving forward."
John Franklin answered in great detail, explaining the basic situation clearly.
After a moment of silence, Jonas Hawthorne asked again, "What kind of poison?"
At this moment, he was calm and composed, even the slightly furrowed long eyebrows were no different from usual.
"A neural toxin. As far as I know, it likely originated overseas, and verifying it will take some time." As John Franklin said this, his writing hand finally paused for a moment.
He squinted his attractive peach blossom eyes, looking at Jonas Hawthorne with puzzlement, "Does Grandma usually have an injection routine?"
"No." Jonas Hawthorne answered straightforwardly.
Grandma is usually in good health, doesn’t have diabetes, and has no bad habits.
Upon hearing this, John Franklin furrowed his brow even tighter, "That’s odd then. This toxin relies on injection, and judging by the dosage, it wasn’t just once."
Typically, poisoning is done by adding it to food, which takes time and causes slow onset. But so long as the intake isn’t excessive, and given the body’s metabolic function, the severity varies from person to person.
But direct injection bypasses the digestive system, rapidly entering the bloodstream.
It seems the person who poisoned her is quite ruthless.
"Injection?" Repeatedly pondering these words, Jonas Hawthorne’s face gradually darkened.
The chance of being discovered while awake is too high; the perpetrator must have acted while Grandma was asleep.
This means it had to be someone close to Grandma who could do it.
It seems the Hawthorne Family needs some housekeeping.
After contemplating for a moment, John Franklin continued, "Overall, the dose in Mrs. Hawthorne’s body isn’t particularly high. I assume the poisoner has more toxin in reserve just in case."
If they had been more ruthless, there would have been no need to save Mrs. Hawthorne.
Jonas Hawthorne nodded, "Thank you."
"No need to be formal, it’s my duty as a doctor." John Franklin’s responses were quite official, without any personal vendetta involved.
This differs greatly from York Jennings.
If York Jennings had the chance to be face to face with Jonas Hawthorne, he might just grab Jonas Hawthorne by the collar and beat him half to death!
After discussing the condition, John Franklin shifted the topic to his little sister.
"Raine is tired, she’s sleeping in the next room."
Jonas Hawthorne paused slightly, thinking Raine Sinclair had already left...
John Franklin continued, "The nurse said she fell asleep at your door, luckily someone passed by and covered her with a blanket."
While speaking, John Franklin was constantly observing Jonas Hawthorne’s expressions, not missing any subtle changes.
When he saw Jonas Hawthorne’s deep eyes first exhibit surprise, then joy, and finally replaced by worry, he raised an eyebrow, "I don’t know what happened between you and Raine to bring you to this point. But from your expression, it doesn’t seem like you don’t care about her at all."
Unlike the typical science-driven persona, John Franklin’s sensitivity in emotions benefitted greatly from having a literature-loving mom.
Being immersed from a young age, he couldn’t help but be aware.
When almost everyone was criticizing Jonas Hawthorne, he detached from the relationship with Raine, examining it purely from an outsider’s perspective.
Jonas Hawthorne didn’t expect John Franklin to say such words, and... directly hit his heart.
Even John Franklin could see it, so he couldn’t believe Raine Sinclair wouldn’t notice.
Perhaps, she understood everything but chose to remain silent, deliberately avoiding everything.
Including his attempts to win her back...
Just thinking of these made his heartache more distinct.
One wave after another washed over him!
He frowned painfully, his thoughts starting to scatter.
John Franklin noticed his anomaly, his gaze darkened as he quickly checked the blood pressure monitor, "Why did the blood pressure suddenly drop so fast?!"
