Chapter 48: Chapter 48:Adding a new member to the team

The sun had barely risen when Kain realized he had overslept. Rushing through his morning routine, he didn’t have time for breakfast but didn’t let it bother him. He grabbed his materials and dashed to his first class of the day: enchanting.

As he entered the enchanting classroom, he noticed the other students already settling in, their various weapons, armor, and enchanting tools laid out in preparation. The room buzzed with the hum of magical energy, and Kain could sense the anticipation in the air.

Their teacher, Professor Elowen, stood at the front of the room, her eyes twinkling with a hint of mischief. "Good morning, everyone. Today, I have a special assignment for you," she announced, her voice resonating with authority. "I want each of you to create an enchantment that has an unconventional use. In other words, I want you to think outside the box and use an enchantment in a way that strays from the normal conventions."

The students exchanged curious glances, intrigued by the challenge. Kain felt a spark of excitement—this was an opportunity to push the boundaries of his creativity.

Professor Elowen continued, "For example, instead of using an enchantment to enhance physical strength, you might use it to help someone stay awake and alert during long tasks or to provide a calming effect in stressful situations. The goal is to apply your enchanting skills in innovative and unexpected ways."

Kain pondered the assignment, his mind racing with possibilities. He decided to create an enchantment that would allow a piece of armor to emit a flash of light that could temporarily blind enemies, giving the wearer a tactical advantage in battle. This unconventional use could provide a momentary distraction, allowing the wearer to strike or escape.

He gathered the necessary materials: a small, polished breastplate, a core and some blood, and an ink well pen . Carefully, Kain began inscribing the runes onto the breastplate, focusing on the intricate patterns and symbols that would bring his vision to life.

As he worked, he felt the familiar flow of magic coursing through his veins. The enchanting process required precision and concentration, but Kain reveled in the challenge. He carefully infused the breastplate with the light-blinding enchantment, which is just the normal glowing but with more output. With the added area, he could put more than one enchantment on it, ensuring that the magic was stable and potent.

After several hours of meticulous work, Kain completed his enchantment. He held the breastplate up to the light, admiring the way the runes glowed softly. Eager to test his creation, he tapped the breastplate infusing mana into it , and a brilliant flash of light erupted from its surface. The enchantment was a success.

He looked around the classroom and saw his classmates engrossed in their own unconventional enchantments. Some were enchanting swords to glow when danger was near, while others were creating armor that could temporarily become invisible. Professor Elowen moved from student to student, offering guidance and feedback.

When the professor reached Kain, she examined the breastplate with a thoughtful expression. "Impressive work, Kain. Using an enchantment for tactical advantage in battle is a clever and innovative approach," she remarked, nodding in approval.

Kain walked into the combat class with a mixture of determination and unease. His encounter with the students the day before was still fresh in his mind. He had been talking to Thorne Blackwood, a gloomy boy with a passion for poisons despite being blessed with a healing innate skill, when Alis, a mage with simi impressive skills, confronted him. Alis and her friends accused Kain of meddling where he didn’t belong, stirring up old grudges and tensions which Kain didnt quite understand what they was going on about.

As he entered the training hall, Kain noticed Alis and her friends watching him from across the room. The instructor began the session, focusing on hand-to-hand combat techniques and shield defense. Kain’s attention, however, kept drifting to Alis, his grip tightening around the handle of his hammer.

The instructor called for pairs to spar. To Kain’s dismay, he was paired with Alis. They faced each other, the air thick with tension.

"Ready?" the instructor asked.

Kain nodded, raising his shield. Alis smirked, her fingers already crackling with energy. They circled each other, probing for openings. When Alis struck first, a bolt of magic darting from her hand, Kain’s hammer came down with the precision of his Hammer Mastery skill, parrying the blow and responding with a quick counterattack.

Alis’ face twisted with anger as she pressed forward, her attacks becoming more aggressive. The spar escalated into a full-blown clash, drawing the attention of the entire class. Kain’s Regeneration and Endurance Training helped him withstand Alis’ magical onslaught, while his Shield Defense and Shield Bash kept her at bay.

"Had enough?" Kain gritted out between breaths, using a Counter Attack to knock Alis off balance.

Alis stumbled but recovered quickly, her eyes blazing with fury. "Not even close."

Just then, the instructor intervened, separating them with a stern look. "That’s enough for today. Remember, this is training, not a brawl." 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

The students dispersed, but the tension lingered. Kain knew that this wasn’t the end of the conflict. As he left the training hall, he felt a new sense of determination. He would need to be stronger and smarter to navigate the challenges ahead, both in combat and in the complex dynamics of student interactions.

Kain walked into the forging class, the room filled with the sound of hammers striking metal and the hum of arcane energy. Vargos, the imposing and knowledgeable forging instructor, was already at the front of the room, demonstrating the properties of mana-rich iron. Today’s assignment was to craft a pair of boots that were both lightweight and capable of reducing impact force when kicking.

Vargos’s booming voice cut through the clamor, "Listen up! Mana-rich iron is a remarkable material, but it requires precision and skill to harness its full potential. Your task is to create boots that are not only light but also absorb impact. This will test your craftsmanship and your ability to infuse mana into the metal. Now, get to work!"

Kain found an empty forge and began gathering his materials. He was no stranger to mana-infused iron, having worked with it in previous assignments. He focused on the metal, recalling the techniques Vargos had taught them. First, he needed to heat the iron just right to make it malleable without losing its mana-infused properties. His hands moved with practiced skill, hammering the iron into the shape of boots.

Next came the critical part: infusing the metal with mana to achieve the desired properties. Kain grabbed his hammer and concentrated, channeling his mana into the hammer first. He could feel the hammer absorbing the energy, becoming a conduit for his mana. Then, with each strike on the iron, he transferred the infused mana into the metal, feeling the material respond to his touch. He remembered Vargos’s advice to balance the infusion—too much mana would make the boots unstable, too little, and they wouldn’t absorb impact effectively.

After hours of meticulous work, Kain stepped back to admire his creation. The boots gleamed with a subtle blue hue, a testament to the mana coursing through them. He slipped them on and tested their weight. Though the boots were better than going barefoot, they were not the best fit and felt a bit uncomfortable when he kicked. Nevertheless, he added small spikes to the toe of the shoe to enhance their combat effectiveness.

Satisfied with his work despite the slight discomfort, Kain proceeded to test their impact absorption by kicking a practice dummy. The force was significantly reduced, the boots performing exactly as intended.

Vargos approached, inspecting Kain’s work with a critical eye. After a moment, he nodded in approval. "Well done, Kain. These boots will serve you well in combat, though you might want to adjust the fit for better comfort."

After forging class, Kain made his way to the cafeteria. As he sat down with Thorne again, he noticed Thorne seemed less gloomy. Without much preamble, Kain asked a strange question, "Hey, can I measure you?"

Thorne was taken aback. Before he could respond, Kain quickly retorted, "So I can make you some armor. You’re going to need some, right?"

Thorne shook his head, "Well, I’m not a fighter, so I don’t really need any. I also use a robe that I made in my tailoring class."

Kain persisted, "Then what about the rest of you? You need boots, gloves, arm guards. What if you need a weapon?"

Thorne’s eyes lit up with excitement. "Can you make blow darts?"

Kain replied with a grin, "Never tried, but it won’t hurt to give it a shot. Also, don’t you need materials for your classes?"

Thorne nodded, "Yes, I do, but I can handle that myself."

Kain gave him a knowing look. "I take it you don’t have a team. Why don’t you team up with me? I have a team already, but one more can’t hurt, right?"

Thorne seemed hesitant but then replied, "Are you sure?"

Kain nodded confidently, "Yeah, meet me at the front gate at 8 am. That’s where my team will be meeting."

Thorne agreed, "Okay."

They then went their separate ways to their dorm rooms and called it a night, both looking forward to the next day’s adventure.
