Regeneration System-Chapter 49: Just the two of us
The sun had just begun to rise, casting a soft golden light over the academy’s training grounds as Kain made his way to the front gate. He had barely gotten a good night’s rest, but the excitement of the new day kept him focused. His team—Liora, Therron, Eryn, and Varian—was waiting, ready for their next adventure.
As Kain neared the group, however, he noticed something off. From a distance, he saw the familiar figures of his teammates clustered around Thorne, who stood off to the side, looking uncomfortably out of place. Liora’s voice rose above the others, her tone sharp and confrontational. "I told you not to talk to him, Kain. And now you’re inviting him to the party?"
Kain’s steps faltered for a moment. He could see the tension in the air, the way Thorne’s posture was stiff, as though he was ready to bolt. Eryn and Varian stood off to the side, watching the scene unfold but saying nothing, and Therron was glaring at Thorne as if he were the cause of all the team’s frustrations.
Kain’s heart sank. He had hoped for a smoother start with his team and Thorne, but this was something else. Without a second thought, he walked straight into the group, his brow furrowed in confusion and frustration.
"What’s going on here?" Kain asked, his voice cutting through the tension. The group froze, and everyone turned to face him.
Liora crossed her arms over her chest, her expression hardening as she stared him down. "You know exactly what’s going on. I told you that Thorne wasn’t welcome here. He’s not one of us, Kain. He’s just some loner with his poisons and weird ways. I told you not to talk to him, and now you’re just bringing him into the fold like it’s nothing."
Thorne, looking uncomfortable, spoke up in his soft, reserved manner. "It’s fine, Kain. I can leave if it’s causing trouble. I didn’t mean to get in the way."
But Kain wasn’t having it. He stepped forward, his gaze unwavering as he met Liora’s eyes. "No, Liora. You can’t just refuse him like this. If you’re refusing Thorne, then I’m leaving the team too."
A heavy silence fell over the group. Kain’s declaration seemed to shake them, but no one spoke immediately. Therron exchanged a look with Eryn, and Varian simply crossed his arms and stared at Kain, his expression unreadable. Kain stood his ground, not backing down.
Finally, Liora broke the silence, her voice cold. "Fine. You want to leave with him? Be my guest. We’ve already gone out without you two and did just fine. This isn’t a huge loss."
Kain’s fists clenched, the sting of her words biting deep, but he refused to let it show. He turned to Thorne, whose face was a mixture of regret and relief. "Come on, Thorne," Kain said firmly. "We’re out of here."
Thorne started to speak, his voice shaky. "I’m sorry, Kain. I didn’t mean to cause any trouble. I—"
Kain cut him off, his voice firm but not unkind. "I don’t need people like that in my life, Thorne. We don’t need them. We can do this on our own. And you know what? Since it’s just the two of us, we don’t have to share as much. Plus, you and I have different professions, so it works out better for us anyway."
Thorne blinked, surprised by Kain’s words, but the sincerity in his voice seemed to reassure him. Kain led the way, moving quickly toward the gates, and Thorne hesitated for a moment before following. Kain could feel the weight of their departure, but he also felt a sense of liberation. It had been clear that his team wasn’t truly united, and today’s events only confirmed it. Thorne wasn’t the problem—he wasn’t the one who needed to apologize.
As they walked, Kain glanced over at Thorne, offering him a small, reassuring smile. "Don’t worry about it. You’ll see. This will work out better for both of us."
Thorne, still processing everything, nodded slowly. "Thanks, Kain. I didn’t expect you to... well, to stick up for me like that."
"Don’t mention it," Kain said with a wave of his hand. "We’ve got this. Let’s just focus on what we need to do."
Kain and Thorne continued walking, their conversation flowing naturally. As the road stretched out before them, Kain felt the need to ask something that had been on his mind ever since their new partnership had been established.
"By the way," Kain began, looking sideways at Thorne, "I never actually asked you—what are your stats?"
Thorne gave him a surprised glance but didn’t hesitate. He paused for a moment before activating his own status screen. Kain’s eyes scanned over Thorne’s stats as they appeared in front of him:

"Impressive," Kain said with a smile, his eyes flicking over the skills. "You’ve got quite a mix of offensive and defensive abilities there. I can already see how we’ll complement each other."
Thorne shrugged modestly. "I focus a lot on supporting and preventing injuries, but I also have a bit of an edge when it comes to poisons. It’s not glamorous, but it’s effective."
Kain nodded with understanding. He was still getting used to this side of combat. "I get it. You can slow down enemies, weaken them, and keep us all healthy. That’s invaluable."
Thorne smiled. "Exactly. Now, what about you? What are your stats?"
Kain chuckled, realizing he hadn’t shared his own yet. "Right, I guess I’ve been keeping that to myself." He summoned his own status screen, and the details appeared in front of both of them:

Kain watched as Thorne carefully looked through the list, his eyes scanning each skill and stat. After a few moments, Thorne gave him a thoughtful nod. "Seems like you’re built for frontline combat. Lots of health, stamina, and strength. You’ve also got a decent set of defensive skills with that Shield Defense and Shield Bash. You’re going to be hard to take down."
Kain smiled, feeling a surge of pride in his class’s focus. "That’s the plan. I might not be the fastest or smartest guy out there, but when it comes to standing my ground, I’ve got the durability. I can take hits and keep on swinging."
Thorne grinned. "I can definitely see that. With your hammer and shield, you’ll be a solid frontliner. And I’ve got the healing and poisons covered from the back. We should make a good team."
Kain slapped him on the back. "I think we already are. We’ve got a good balance, and I think that’s what’s going to make us work well together."
As they continued walking toward their first mission, Kain felt the connection with his new partner solidify. With Thorne’s healing and toxin expertise and his own raw combat strength, they would be a force to be reckoned with. Kain was more confident than ever that this partnership would be something truly formidable.
Kain and Thorne trekked deeper into the forest, the dense trees parting slightly to reveal the heart of the wilderness. The air felt cooler here, and the scent of wet earth and moss was thick in the atmosphere. Kain’s instincts were on high alert as he adjusted the grip on his hammer. Beside him, Thorne moved quietly, his eyes scanning the surroundings while his fingers hovered over the vials in his satchel.
Suddenly, they heard a growl—low, guttural, and menacing. The sound reverberated through the trees, sending a shiver down Kain’s spine. He glanced over at Thorne, who gave a single nod, signaling that they were both ready. They both crouched low, moving through the underbrush, each step deliberate as they followed the noise.
Ahead of them, they spotted the creature.
A hulking figure emerged from the shadows of the forest—a beast that stood nearly ten feet tall, its broad, muscular frame covered in thick, dark fur that blended with the shadows. It had the head of a boar with the eyes of a predator—glowing red and feral. The creature’s tusks jutted out from its mouth like weapons, and its claws were as long and sharp as daggers, glistening in the faint light that filtered through the trees.
The Boarbeast—a Level 12 monster—was a formidable foe known for its brutal strength and natural agility. Its body was built like a tank, designed to overpower anything that came into its path. The Boarbeast’s elemental attribute was Earth, giving it incredible resilience and strength. This also made it harder to damage with elemental magic, as the earth-based energy absorbed much of the impact from magical attacks.
Kain narrowed his eyes as he assessed the beast. He could feel the power radiating from the creature—its muscles coiled and ready to strike. The creature sniffed the air, seemingly sensing their presence, and it turned toward them with a primal roar.
Boarbeast
Level: 12
HP: 550/550
MP: 30/30
Strength: 45
Defense: 40
Agility: 18
Elemental Attribute: Earth
Abilities: Ground Slam: The Boarbeast strikes the ground with incredible force, creating shockwaves that disrupt the ground and damage all enemies in a small radius. Tusken Charge: A charging attack using its tusks to gore enemies, dealing both physical and Earth-elemental damage.
Earth’s Grasp: Summons tendrils of earth from the ground to restrain opponents, preventing movement and dealing damage over time.
Kain’s heart raced as he readied his hammer, the weight of the battle settling in his chest. "That’s one hell of a monster," he muttered under his breath.
Thorne, still at Kain’s side, nodded gravely. "And it’s not going to be easy. But we can handle it. I’ll weaken it with my poisons, you keep it distracted with your hammer."
Kain gave a determined nod and raised his shield. "Let’s get this over with."
Without warning, the Boarbeast let out a fearsome roar and charged toward them, its massive tusks gleaming. Kain swung into action, charging forward with his shield raised, preparing to meet the beast head-on. As the creature came closer, Kain slammed his shield into its side, using his Shield Bash to knock it off balance.
The Boarbeast grunted in pain but quickly recovered, its tusks aimed directly at Kain’s chest. With a swift motion, Kain sidestepped and countered with his hammer, the weapon connecting with the beast’s side. The blow hit hard, but the creature’s Earth attribute absorbed much of the damage, making it only stagger slightly.
Thorne was already at work, his fingers moving quickly to grab a vial of his poison. He uncorked it and hurled it toward the creature’s legs. The vial shattered on impact, releasing a noxious green cloud. The poison began to take effect almost immediately, and the Boarbeast slowed its movements, its growls turning into labored breaths as it tried to shake off the toxins.
"Good job, Thorne!" Kain shouted, taking another swing with his hammer. This time, the impact was more effective, and the Boarbeast howled in pain as it stumbled backward.
The creature retaliated with a powerful Tusken Charge, rushing toward Kain with terrifying speed. He tried to raise his shield in time, but the force of the impact sent him flying backward, his shield ringing from the hit. The creature’s tusks barely missed Kain’s side, but he could feel the sheer power behind the attack.
"Watch out!" Thorne called out, rushing forward. He tossed another vial of poison, this time a Venomous Cloud that disoriented the creature and caused it to stagger again. The toxic fumes spread quickly, further weakening the Boarbeast’s endurance.
Kain, taking advantage of the distraction, stood and charged forward once more. He used his Juggernaut Swing, channeling all his strength into the blow. His hammer landed with a resounding crash, and this time, the Boarbeast didn’t just stagger—it collapsed to one knee, the force of the impact driving it to the ground.
It growled and struggled to rise, but Thorne wasn’t done yet. He stepped forward, invoking his Healing Waters ability. A small droplet of restorative water appeared in his palm, glowing faintly with magical energy. He hurled it at Kain, the healing magic restoring a small portion of Kain’s health.
Kain didn’t hesitate. With a mighty roar, he brought his hammer down again, this time aiming for the creature’s skull. The blow landed squarely, and the Boarbeast let out a final, earth-shattering roar before it collapsed, lifeless, to the forest floor.
Kain stood over the defeated monster, panting heavily. His shield was dented, and his armor was scratched, but he was alive. Thorne walked up beside him, his expression one of quiet satisfaction.
"That wasn’t easy," Kain said, wiping the sweat from his brow. "But we did it."
Thorne nodded, looking down at the creature’s body. "We make a good team. The poison worked well, and your strength really helped finish it off."
Kain grinned. "Yeah, but we’re not done yet. Let’s see what we can get from this beast."
They began harvesting the creature’s materials—its tusks, claws, and fur—all of which would prove useful for crafting and alchemy. The earth-based core and blood the creature possessed was also valuable for certain enchantments and potions.
As they gathered their spoils, Kain turned to Thorne, a glint of pride in his eyes. "Not bad for a first hunt, huh?"
Thorne smiled softly. "Not bad at all."
As Kain wiped the sweat from his brow, his chest heaving from the intensity of the fight, he turned to Thorne with a slight frown. His mind was racing, his muscles still buzzing with the aftermath of the battle. "By the way," he said, his voice a little more serious than before, "watch out with those poisons. I don’t have any resistance to them."
Thorne stopped for a moment, his hand still holding one of the Boarbeast’s tusks as he stared at Kain in surprise. "Oh... I didn’t even think of that," he said, his voice full of remorse. "I’m sorry, Kain. I should have been more careful."
Kain shook his head, brushing it off. "Well, it didn’t get me this time," he said with a small grin, trying to ease the tension between them. He knew it was a rookie mistake, and that it was easy to overlook, especially when focused on the fight.
Thorne relaxed a bit, but he still looked concerned. "I do have antidotes with me, though," he added, reaching into his satchel and pulling out a small vial filled with a glowing, translucent liquid. "I made sure to bring plenty just in case, but I’ll be more careful next time."
Kain’s expression softened slightly, and he nodded. "Well, at least that’s a positive note," he said, his eyes scanning the surroundings as he collected the spoils of the battle. "But next time, just try to warn me before you throw something like that around. Or... we need to find a way for me to get immune to them."
Thorne gave him an understanding nod, thinking for a moment. "I can make plenty more poisons if you want to drink them to build up resistance," he said thoughtfully. "Don’t worry, I’ll dilute them so they’re not too strong. It’s a process, but it might help you build a bit of a tolerance over time."
Kain paused for a moment, his fingers absentmindedly tracing the edge of his hammer. He was thoughtful, weighing the idea. The notion of drinking poison to get used to it wasn’t exactly appealing, but Thorne had a point—having some kind of resistance could prove useful in the long run. Still, the idea of ingesting poison didn’t sit well with him.
"We’ll see," Kain finally replied softly, a thoughtful look crossing his face. "I’m not sure about drinking poison just yet, but... I’ll think about it."
Thorne nodded again, clearly understanding that Kain wasn’t ready to dive into something so extreme. "Take your time," he said. "It’s your choice, after all. Just know I can make more if you ever decide you want to try."
Kain gave a small, grateful smile. "Thanks, Thorne. I appreciate it."
The two of them stood in silence for a moment, the forest now calm and peaceful, with the last of the Boarbeast’s struggles still echoing in their memories. Kain couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of their journey, and there would be much more to come. But for now, they had each other’s backs—and that was all that mattered.
