Chapter 297: Chapter 297: No Vultures?

The hind hoof of the old zebra struck the rash goat at the section in between its eyes. A tremor spread from the point of contact then rippled like a water wave to the neck, shoulders, limbs, and the rest of the body.

The goat’s body shook before collapsing, losing momentum and tumbling through the grass like a rag doll.

The goat was used to using his head to fight, taking advantage of his hard skull to attack all his opponents in the past. He had never imagined that this zebra’s hind kick would be so powerful.

The goat lay on the ground, it was unknown whether he would survive as that kick had definitely affected his brain.

But the other creatures engaging in his chase did not care about this, the other goats, wolves, and foxes sped past the collapsed goat. They continued to pursue the old zebra.

At least, now they knew that they had to avoid a kick from the zebra.

As the old zebra ran for its life, he noticed that some wolves were catching up and keeping up with his running speed from the right side.

His breath was getting shorter and he was running out of stamina. He was already very tired before the chase began, now, he was running at his maximum limits and he couldn’t keep up.

His belly began to hurt and his spin ached. His limbs trembled as they struggled to keep his body standing.

He was getting slower, and the pursuers were getting faster.

*BAM!*

The old zebra felt something hit him from the side, causing him to falter slightly. But he didn’t lose his balance, his mass was greater than what hit him.

From the corner of his vision, he could see that one of the goats had headbutted his thigh.

The goat screamed frantically at the top of its lungs, upset that its hit had not brought down this old zebra.

Alas, that hit had still slowed down the zebra by a degree. Within an instant, they closed in on the old zebra.

The zebra started hearing the sound of jaws snapping as they tried to bite his legs. The old zebra burst out with all the speed he could muster, straining his body to the absolute limits it could go.

But it was already too late...

The wolves closed in from the right side, one of them successfully bit one of his limbs, the area above his joint.

The pain shot through his body as the sharp teeth ripped through his flesh because of the movements.

Another bite at his hind legs, a scratch on his side. The wolves and foxes did not have the flexible paws that felines had so they could not use their claws to grab the zebra steadily. They had to rely on their jaws.

Like that, the old zebra was being bled open, one layer of skin after the other. His previously white and black coat was starting to get stained with red.

The pursuers were just too much for the zebra. More than twenty of them and they all wanted to bring him down.

In fact, it was starting to seem like they were taking their time to wear him down

Finally, one of his limbs, which was bleeding, couldn’t take the strain anymore and gave out.

The old zebra buckled under his own weight and one of the wolves used the opportunity to throw his open maw at the zebra’s neck.

The fangs sank into the neck of the zebra and blood flowed into the lucky wolf’s mouth. The wolf made sure to bite hard and reeled his head back ferociously, using his weight to deal the final blow.

With a full-grown adult wolf hanging from his bleeding neck, the zebra finally collapsed and crashed face-first into the ground.

Even while he somersaulted, the wolves and foxes continued pouncing on him. The goats charged forth, bashing him relentlessly with their horns, trying to claim that prize.

The horns of the goats pierced the belly and sides of the old zebra, causing him serious pain. The wolves did not even wait until the old zebra was dead, they began to rip the flesh apart, they used their sharp fangs to thug in the black striped coat and tore it away from the flesh.

The old zebra spent his last moments enduring the pain of being eaten alive. His throat was being ripped apart so he didn’t even have the ability to scream before he lost consciousness.

With the zebra dead, the goats stepped away from the dead body leaving the foxes and the wolves to feast on the body.

The wolves and foxes did not stand in ceremony, they devoured the body of the old zebra with glee.

A fight broke out between a fox and a wolf, leading to an escalating conflict. Some of them didn’t want to share the food, it was their nature, but there were just too many competitors for this meat.

For most of them, this was their first time tasting zebra meat.

By the time the beastly horde had arrived at their location, the whole zebra was gone except for the bloody bones and some undesirable pieces of flesh.

Some wolves who had not participated in the chase rushed toward the zebra remains to take the bones for themselves.

But besides that, the goats, foxes, and wolves, rejoined the horde as they continued to sweep through the wild plains.

The zebra herd was still far away but they were in sight and the birds had their eyes on them.

At the center of the beastly horde, a massive golden lion looked to the sky in thought.

’No vultures,’ Kael thought. Maybe it was because there were a lot of powerful birds in the sky at this point from the kingdom’s faction, but he had not seen any vultures.

It was normal for the wild plains to lack any large living creatures for many kilometers, but birds like vultures should be more common.

Kael didn’t know why but he was having a strange feeling when he thought of the vultures.

This feeling wasn’t like that time he had sensed the heavenly beacon. No, this feeling came from his guts.

He pushed the feeling to the back of his mind when he sensed one particular bird flying toward him.

He looked in that direction to see a large owl coated in flaming feathers diving toward him.

This was the current leader of the owl caste, he had been sent to explore the area beyond the zebra herd and assess where they were going.

"Your Majesty," The Owl Caste leader greeted in a very deep voice that gave one the feeling of talking to a wise and cautious being.

Most owls spoke this way using that peculiar telepathic accent and it wasn’t something restricted to this owl.

Kael ignored this fascinating uniqueness about the owls and nodded to the Owl Caste Leader.

The owl leader felt that this was his permission to land and so he did that, only for him to feel as if he had fallen into an invisible mud pit. For a few seconds, he found it hard to move his body mid-air.

Then, the sticky feeling disappeared and he landed on the ground.

Priya narrowed her eyes in thought, it had happened again. She was now able to recognize some things and realized that one would need space or air powers to be able to do that.

Chloe was not here, so Priya automatically thought of Katari. ’Is she here?’ She thought, looking around.

But she didn’t see any sign of a large lioness anywhere. If Katari wanted to hide, it wouldn’t be easy to find her.

"What did you find?" Kael asked, snapping the fiery owl out of his dazed state.

The owl leader refocused his big eyes on the golden lion in front of him, remembering what he originally came here for.

"Your Majesty, we scouted the region beyond this place and I think the zebra herd knows where they are going?" The Owl leader said as he bowed his head, he couldn’t maintain eye contact with Kael for too long without feeling uncomfortable.

"Where?" Kael asked. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm

"There’s a river up ahead, it’s still far but at the speed the zebras are going, they can reach it before the end of today, so can we.

The river is big but it’s definitely crossable, I don’t know if there are any creatures within the river though." The owl leader said.

"Oh," Kael blinked, "There should definitely be some creatures inhabiting that river. There’s no crossable river that doesn’t have predators lying in wait." He said.

"Your Majesty, should I continue scouting ahead?" The owl asked.

"Yes, tell me what you see in the river, swimming lizards, or something else.

Also, check what lies beyond that river, it seems the zebra herd is being led by an experienced leader." Kael gave his orders, after which the owl flapped his large fiery wings and flew away.

Kael’s eyes focused back on the horizon and an amused smile appeared on his golden-furred face.

’What a bold idea...’
