Later that day, all 56 of the villagers gathered in front of Jared's house.

Most of the buildings in the village were huts built from leaves and mud.

Only the chief's place was made of rocks, but that didn't exactly make it better since it was usually cold there, especially during rainy nights.

Standing in front of the door, with Lucy beside him, Jared stood at the very front, watching as the villagers all looked at him with expectation and wariness.

"He looks different. I wonder if he has been crying."

"Poor thing."

"Is he going to step down?"

The murmurs echoed through the air, and Jared could hear every single one.

Still, he understood why they were worried.

Clearing his throat, he began, "Good afternoon. Sorry I called you all out here on such short notice."

His voice was loud enough for everyone to hear.

Immediately after he spoke, the entire place turned silent.

"I'm sure you're aware of the death of my father. I only just found out about it this morning. In fact, I heard he has already been buried. I never got the chance to say goodbye to my father. Life can often be disappointing like that."

He scanned the masses, reading the expressions on their faces.

"While my father was sick, I went out in search of a way to cure him from the curse. I failed, and I apologize. I know a lot of you were rooting for me. That is why it breaks my heart to find out some of you were planning to leave the village, and though I do not blame you, I still feel the need to ask you this—while you remain in this village, you are still forever my responsibility."

He pointed at them.

"Where would you go? Heading towards the capital is a safe bet, but I can assure you it's not that easy. The people on the outside despise us northerners. Do you really think they would accept you with open arms? Of course not!"

He continued, "If you were to take the other alternative and try to relocate to another village, that is even worse, as you could be killed on the spot. Worst-case scenario, the villagers accept you—how many people do you know who want your best interests at heart?"

Jared made sure his voice was heard.

Of course, he knew nothing about what he was saying. Hell, he had never been to any village other than the Eani Village to the south.

Just like him, the other villagers faced the same fate—they had never been anywhere other than where they grew up.

That is why, no matter how many lies Jared told them about the outside world, they would believe it in a heartbeat.

Besides, it wasn't really a lie that the people from the outside hated northerners. A bit of a white lie wouldn't hurt anyone.

Grinning devilishly in his mind, Jared muttered—

'Yes, that's it. Just a bit more push, and I'll have them questioning everything.'

"While I was away, I managed to reach the outcast, the solitary zone close to the capital. I was not only assaulted for being a northerner, but I was also almost sold into slavery! I don't want the same fate to befall you all. Please, I beg of you to reconsider!" he voiced out with a touching tone.

The people began to look around with nervous expressions.

If what Jared had told them was true, that would mean they didn't have any other choice but to rot in the village with no food.

Lucy sighed. She, on the other hand, had known Jared for years, hence she knew when he was lying and when he was telling the truth.

"Young master, but we can't stay here anymore! We barely have enough food to last everyone!" one of the male villagers yelled, worry filling his lungs.

"Yeah!"

"That's true!"

"Please, my children are hungry!"

Every single one of them began to speak their minds, some on the verge of crying.

'Just as I expected.' Jared hid his sinister smile.

Activating his [Inventory] skill, Jared reached into the dark portal that opened up beside him and pulled out a white box with the writing "Chicken Republic" on it.

He then stretched it forward for the villagers to see—

"Listen to me, my faithful citizens! I did not only journey out of the village to look for my father's cure. No, I also went in search of a solution for the entire Sikone Village!"

His voice was filled with passion.

"The goddess heard our cries, and she answered, giving me the power to change our lives! What I hold in my hand is the food of the gods! We shall feast and never be hungry. I promise you, I will make our village better, because the goddess wills it so."

"What's inside that box?!"

"The young lord met with the goddess?"

"Impossible!"

Jared still kept a straight face.

Before he stepped out of the room, he had given a hard thought to what he could do to pull the interest of the people.

Then he remembered—back in his world, food was one of the best ways to calm the nerves of any person.

If the villagers could get a taste of something they had never eaten before, that should pull them back to the village.

And if that didn't work—

Jared moved closer to the villagers and opened the box. Inside the box, there were chicken nuggets and sauces on the side.

"Please, allow the goddess to help us. Dig in," he said to them.

They were hesitant, unaware of what food they were about to put in their mouths.

It wasn't until one of the males took a bite of the chicken and nearly collapsed to the ground with happiness that the rest began to chow down too.

A total of 25 boxes—that was the amount of chicken nuggets Jared bought from the system to feed the villagers.

From the looks of it, they were enjoying it. For a brief moment, they no longer felt hungry or worried about anything other than eating more chicken.

Jared watched from the side, a smile on his face completely masking whatever he was thinking.
