Chapter 5 - Humans?

The feast went on for a while. The entire village sat down on the cloth they had laid on the ground, eating to their heart's content as they laughed and gossiped with one another.

Even while the sun was almost coming down, you could still hear their murmurs go on for miles.

Meanwhile, sitting in front of everyone was Jared Hunter, his arms folded as he observed the scene before him.

Quite frankly, it was the first time in a long while that he had seen the people of Sikone so happy and joyful.

Food was really a powerful weapon.

With a sigh, Jared looked to the side, where he could see the system notification.

[Sp: 1050.]

After spending all his money on the chicken nuggets, Jared went on to earn over one thousand Sp from making the villagers happy. In a way, he made a good investment that paid off.

'That's enough of that.'

He then stood to his feet.

"Are you all satisfied?!" Jared asked in a loud voice.

All eyes were fixed on him, including Lucy, who was also feasting on the chicken nuggets at the side.

One hand on his chest and the other behind his back as he bowed his body slightly, Jared uttered in a calm voice,

"If you are, then you have the goddess to thank for this. She has instructed me to lead our village to victory. And I plan to do just that. I will transform our failed estate into the greatest land known to man. The question is, how many of you are willing to walk this path with me?"

After careful consideration, one by one, the villagers began to stand on their feet.

"We'll follow your every word, Lord Jared," one of them spoke.

"Please, allow us to assist you too."

"If the goddess wills it, then who are we to object?"

"Maybe we can even surpass the other villages?!"

"Yeah!"

Before he knew it, everyone in the village had already accepted his terms and was willing to stay.

At the very least, they wanted to see if their young master could truly live up to his words.

Jared smiled before standing upright.

'It worked. I was expecting to guilt-trip them with the chicken if any of them pulled out. Turns out I didn't need to go extreme.'

"Lord Jared." Lucy appeared beside him, the chicken bone still in her mouth.

"This is the first time I've seen the village this lively. It's usually always so gloomy and sometimes very hard to think of anything positive. I guess what I'm trying to say is... thank you."

Jared could not believe his ears. Lucy was not the type to soften up to people so easily. She was a woman of cold and simple words, so hearing her thank him was somewhat surprising.

Then again, he did see her cry when he woke up, so it shouldn't really be that much of a shock.

Sighing, he placed his hand on his wrist. "Don't thank me yet, because I plan to work you all to the bone. I'll be damned if my father's death goes to nothing." He grinned. "I'll take this entire place to heaven if I have to."

Lucy could only stare at him.

Though it was hard to tell what she was thinking due to how she was usually so emotionless, this time she allowed it to slip for a while.

And she asked,

"Are you really... Lord Jared?"

Jared turned his head in her direction, his expression as calm as it could be.

.....

Later that night,

Jared lay flat in his bed, his eyes focused on the ceiling before him.

Having only a single lamp to light up the room didn't really do much, since only the window side was receiving the entire light.

Every other place was dark but still manageable.

'I guess I'm doing a very bad job of hiding it. Am I really that different?' he thought to himself.

He recalled the question Lucy asked him and how serious she was when she did.

"Your father dying from your helplessness would change anyone, no?"

That was the best response he could give her on the spot.

She never questioned his reply and instead apologized for being insensitive.

Sigh!

Jared sat upright, his eyes now filled with determination.

'Now is not the time to be thinking about that. I have to find a way to fix this hunger issue in the village before they start to lose faith in me again.'

"System."

[The system has answered your call.]

'Ah—I didn't expect that to work,' he said to himself. 'Okay, I have a question.'

[The system is listening.]

'The stuff I can buy—are they only limited to modern items? For example, is there any chance I could purchase magical items as well?'

[The system can offer you magical items and many other things if you wish to purchase them. The options are endless.]

'Endless? So if I wanted to purchase a mansion?'

[Mansions of all types are available.]

'If I want to purchase a key that can open all locks?'

[The system has keys of all categories.]

Jared was surprised.

'Wow, I'm not going to lie, that's pretty impressive. I should push its limit and see where it ends.'

Clearing his throat, he asked another question,

'And if I want to purchase a human being?'

[Purchasing a human being of all types is available.]

Now Jared was shocked—completely dumbfounded.

Being able to buy a human being from the system was nothing short of god-like.

That was just as equivalent to being able to create a human being.

And judging from how the system said he could purchase all types, it meant he could choose what type he wanted to buy, including personality and body types.

Covering his mouth, Jared couldn't help but blush a bit. "This is actually quite impressive. I'm feeling tempted to give it a go."

He looked towards the door to make sure no one was there. After that, he turned back to the system.

'Okay, show me the list of humans I can buy.'
